How old are those stations in Beijing?

Beijing West Railway Station was completed in early 1990s, but
I don't know how old Beijing Railway Station is, surely much older than Beijing West.

Beijing's West Railway Station, abb. Beijing West (Hanyu Pinyin: Beijing Xikezhan, Simplified and Traditional Chinese: 北京西客站, abb. Beijing Xi 北京西) is located in the west of Beijing. Opened in early 1996 after three hard years of work, it is the biggest railway station in Asia. It was expanded in 2000 and can now handle 300,000 passengers daily. It also has vast parking lots.

The designs of many stations are very good. However, I dislike the way that they put the
Chinese name of the stations in gold/red on every station. It is REALLY an EYESORE!!

I agree.

I also dislike the font they chose...

The 草書 caoshu font is the Chinese equivalent of the cursive font with Roman letters. It's artistic and fancy but definitely doesn't mix well with modern architectural designs. The ideal font to use would be something like 黑體 heiti, a black, bold font.

Once a time, the railway station was often a big landmark in each city. Now with the popularity of aviation and expressways, railway is losing its glory. Please post the railway stations you know/like, newly-built or old ones. Thanks!

a beautiful railway station and magnificent station square.

New station was built 2005 after a fire tore down the old one. People are angry because it took too long to build (5 years) but it deserves the waiting.

The newly-built Chinese train stations are works of amazing beauty!!!!

I wish Canada was more train-dependent... I really like that Shanghai South Railway Station's design!

If residents are angry that the Nanjing train station took a really long time to build, they'd be more angry if they lived in Canada!!! It takes an extremely long time to build stuff here... a subway line that is only 5 stations long took SEVEN years!!!

Guangzhou new railway station will be finished spring 2008, cost 13 billion RMB ($1.6 billion), area 4 times larger than the old one, capacity 116 million p/y, connecting subway line 2, line 7, line 12 and Feshan Line 3.

WOW!!! Can't wait for those train stations to be built!

I hope China can one day rival France and Japan in terms of train technology. It'd be amazing if China could develop high-speed rails/ trains that rival the TGV and the Shinkansen that could connect major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin, etc.

BTW, I really like that Beijing Railway Station. Can't see why Beijing residents would complain...

Seriously, I lived in Beijing for a total of over 6 months in the span of 2 years, I've never heard anyone said anything negative about the station.

Care to elaborate on just how the station is a "cheap and bad imitation of traditional Chinese design"?

It's not new any more so people care less. But when I was in Beijing (I stayed in Beijing for 6 consecutive years), it was very controversial from the project start date to the very completion date.

News is the west station rail project actually missed the deadline, to deal with the Beijing government's officials, they wasted money to lay a temporary rail to cheat.

There's many other stories about it and many people didn't like it at that time.

I just read an article here about a proposed expansion to the Tianjin Train Station:
http://www.ditie.cc/news/ShowInfo.aspx?NewsID=504

Which elaborates more on the plans. For those of you who can't read Chinese or haven't used adsotrans (http://www.chinese-forums.com/showthread.php?t=8158) yet, (it's fantastic!), I'll give you a bit of a rundown.

Here's the plan for what it will all look like:
http://www.ditie.cc/Admin/News_B/UpLoad/20060417090304906.JPG

Basically, they'll be renovating and expanding the existing facility to accomodate the new high-speed rail link with Beijing, as well as adding subway stations for the number 2,3, and number 9 lines. The number 9 line is the light-rail line out to Tanggu, by the way. Here is a map where those other lines are going to go:

http://www4.enorth.com.cn/pic/0/00/01/02/10289_959925.jpg

The plan right now is to have the station expansion completed by 2010. We'll see if they can live up to that.

why china's trains are always green?

Here are possible explanations

1. The guy in charge at the train manufacturing facility is old fashioned
2. China is called "Big Green" perhaps they want to match the trains
3. They have too much green paint in the industry
4. Green color won't freightened the wildlife on the Tibetan Plateau
5. Green is more pleasing to the eyes
6. The person who paint these trains are colored blind.
7. They just like Green

Lolz! Well I'm just foolin around, but honestly China's trains aren't mostly green. Other colors are just as abundant such as the white body with blue stripes or White body with orange stripes, or the white body with both red and blue stripes. China does need to paint its trains better, metros on the other hand have good colors...its quite strange.

They are going to choose a colour for the trains and they just happened to pick green, what more explanation do you need?

New Suzhou railway station starts construction on Nov 28 '07. Below are some renderings, the design is very consistent with the city's style.

^^ China has too many "modern" railway stations, it's time to pursue some local unique element in the station design.

The new Wuchang railway station, another good design imo, will complete by the end of this month (Dec '07)

Yeah i totally agree. That works for certain cities that aren't well known or are intentionally very modern, like Suzhou or Guangzhou or the planned Pudong railway station. Otherwise, for cities like Suzhou, Xi'an, or Nanjing, a traditional Chinese station works better. However, other cities like Shanghai or Qingdao can use a very classy baroque station like they have in Paris.

I think it's time I revived this thread by saying that the Beijing West Railway Station is poorly constructed and is expected to have a shortened life. The poor construction standards, which resulted in a leaky roof when it opened, are blamed on corruption and bribery. As the station is built on mud, it is also currently sinking.

Yes. I just wanted to find out that this fact is true or not. If it is true, we need to tear down the current station and build a new one. We may not be able to afford that.

That Beijing West Railway Station was opened in 1996, right ? So it is in operation for 11 years so far.

If this is true, then I am not surprised since corruption was so rampant in the 90s.

I am disappointed in general at Chinese railway stations. They look so tacky and tasteless. I mean I don't care about smaller, less westernized Chinese cities but don't we think that Shanghai or Qingdao can use a very elegant neo-classical station like la Gare du Nord or Grand Central or the old Penn Station with giant marble columns and all that instead of that ugly big glass facade?

I think they should build something Chinese stylled, but not like the Beijing one with the temple on top...

Yeah, the new Suzhou station is Chinese styled.

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=553994

as is Wuchang Railway station featured in there.

Thats appropriate for cities like Suzhou and modern glass stations are appropriate for less traditional cities like Shijiazhuang, Jinan, Taiyuan, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, etc.

But for Shanghai and Qingdao, they should really use something like this:

I'm watching it too since Beijing South Station will be a big hub connecting buses, subway (line 9? and line 14) and high-speed train.

But it's too early to get any good renderings, Below is the only one I get. Sorry it's not clear.

Beijing South railway station (to be completed March 2008)
http://www.jtjpm.com/upfile/200603/200631112046.jpg

I know I already brought back an old thread about China's Railway Stations, but I decided to bring back this one as well just to talk about the Beijing South Railway Station. I know it replaces the old South railway station which was built in 1958, but if the old station gets replaced by the new one, the old one should be demolished/removed.

Why would you want to make copies of historic Western stations? You discribed new Chinese stations as tacky and tasteless, but I can't think of anything more tacky than to make pastiche copies of stations that are not even from your own country. Some of the photos that were posted showed some beautiful Western style stations, those should be kept and preserved because they are of historic value, but why build new stations in that style? If you're going to copy a historic style, then at least copy a historic Chinese style. Architecturally, one of my favourite new stations in China is the one built in Lhasa designed to look similar in style to traditional Tibetan architecture:

I'm not saying make copies of historic Western stations. I'm saying build original Western Neo-classical style stations in Shanghai and Qingdao ONLY. Those two are historically western cities with strong western culture and architecture. It is only natural to build new stations in classical Western architecture (NOT COPIES) to supplement the architecture in the rest of the city. Obviously they shouldn't build a neo-classical station in Suzhou, Xi'an, or Beijing. Other than Shanghai and Qingdao, either modern glassy stations or traditional chinese stations are all fine.

Yes! Hopefully they just tear the old piece of shit down and build something that complements the character of the city, ie massive elegant neo-classical or baroque station rivaling the Old Penn Station or Gare du Nord. The new station in Qingdao is faithful to the city's character, so why can't the one in Shanghai be too?

In a city like Shanghai, a big modern glass station would be too much of waste, because then it wouldn't stand out from any other city in China.

This station is designed to serve the majority of local people. People have seen too much of the local painting figures.

This oil painting was there for 20 years and reserved after two major renovations. It seems everybody likes it.

Western constructions are using zen and fen shui stuff more and more often, and nobody bashes us for it. Why do so many people bash China when they use unchinese-looking stuff?

Maybe fengshui and chan/zen is almost invisible and non-invasive. You don't get an immediate visual impact.

Personally I feel like Shanghai should NOT be building futuristic designs. Because then what sets it apart from any other city in China? Shanghai needs to understand it needs to build on what makes it unique and start building grand, elegant neoclassical stations. I mean that's what Qingdao did right? (its new railway station is consistent with its citywide unique architectural style)
