I like this. It may be old, but balconies and sea views are good. Isn't this somewhere on the green line out towards Kwun Tong?

I went by this estate several times as I headed to Cyberport. Definitely amazing that public housing can have million dollar water views. It's a nice self contained community but at the same time, quite convenient to travel anywhere by bus.

I went by this estate several times as I headed to Cyberport. Definitely amazing that public housing can have million dollar water views. It's a nice self contained community but at the same time, quite convenient to travel anywhere by bus.

Everyone says the same thing now. But if you know the history about Wah Fu Estate, it's another story.

When it was built in 60s and 70s, it is one of the most remote public housing estate in HK on the south side of the island. Aberdeen was a straight fishing village, there was nothing around. Bus service was limited, it took hours to travel to the north side. Transportation cost was and is still high. Moreover, during the WWII, the Japanese dumped dead bodies at the same location. Everyone knew the story and no body wanted to move there. Even the government leased the flats at a very low rent, but the location and history still kept people away from it.

And then now people say Wah Fu has a very good Feng Tsui, and has made the people live there rich. It is one of the richest public housing estate in HK.
But at the same time, a lot of the second generations have moved out of Wah Fu. In estate service is getting a little shady and there is an aging problem evolving in recent years.

Housing Department confirms Wah Fu Estate structurally safe
Friday, June 20, 2008
Government Press Release

All the 18 housing blocks in Wah Fu Estate in Southern District will be retained after a comprehensive structural investigation conducted by the Housing Department confirmed that they are structurally safe.

However, since the buildings have deteriorated to varying degrees due to ageing and environmental degradation, some structural repairs and improvement works will be carried out at various locations of the buildings in order to sustain them for the next 15 years.

"It is more economically sustainable to retain the buildings by carrying out repair works than demolishing them for redevelopment," a spokesman for the Housing Department said today (June 20).

Estate improvement works will also be carried out in parallel to enhance the living environment for tenants of the estate, the spokesman said.

The works would include the construction of lifts and escalators to link up locations with large level differences to facilitate access.

"To minimise nuisance arising from the repair and improvement works, less-disturbing repair methods will be used," the spokesman said.

Examples of these methods are concrete removal using cutting tools with noise damping; dust screens to prevent dust from entering tenants' flats; rapidly demountable noise absorbing panels as noise screens; and temporary walking platforms to maintain access in corridors.

"In addition, the works will be carried out in sequence to minimise disturbance to tenants," the spokesman said, adding that tenants would be fully consulted in due course.

Completed between 1967 and 1978, Wah Fu Estate comprises 9,147 flats in 18 blocks of 10 to 27 storeys.
