this is a very interesting and controversial set of images. The topic is fantastic for the depth of discussions can be really intense. I will try to update you with some Miami pics as Miamis contrast between classes and standards is very disparate. Maybe this thread could generate some discussion topics relative to the images and cities?

Yup, that was Detroit in the 70's and 80's. Ironically, most of those pictures were taken in a neighborhood of the city that is seeing the most revitalization.
For instance, this:

Yea, I think Detroit is the most ghetto out of all. I also think it has the worse crime rate. The crime is outragous there. Bad bad people. Grafitti everywhere, burnt houses, crazy people. I should know, I live in Windsor which is 30min away from Detroit. I often visit it. My car was stolen there before.

Detroit doesn't have the worst crime rate in the nation. Actually of all cities over 100,000 Detroit isn't even in the top 20 for the U.S. St. Louis actually has the highest crime rate. In fact, even Dallas has a higher crime rate than Detroit.
And really, $100 bucks says you're car wasn't stolen.

Last summer (2004) i've visited Eastern Europe and on the way back to home i have visited Leipzig, in eastern Germany. There was urban decay in it's most pure form, endless empty homes and streets.
Somewhere, i read that that city ones had 750.000 residents, but it's now less than 500.000 and it's still declining. Despite all the money for development, the cities in the eastern part of Germany are losing in a rapid speed people. They don't have a bright future according to me.
Leipzig
Size: 29 754 ha
Population: approx. 493 000
Population decline (1990–2000): approx. 15 %
Average household size: 1.9 pers.
Number of dwellings: approx. 315 000
Vacancy rate: 20 %
Housing benefit recipients: approx. 10 %
Unemployment rate 18.1%
Population under 18: 14.6 %
Population 65 and older: 18.6 %
