BuffCity June 15th, 2005, 06:40 PM Just out of curiosity, has anyone really made any money selling or even contracting thier photos?

Urban Dave June 16th, 2005, 01:20 AM No money! But I would like to make it! Its a hobby and you get paid, there could be something better?
BuffCity June 16th, 2005, 02:53 PM Urban Dave, I just took a look at some of your work...you should consider some sales.
I guess there is no way to know if you think your work can sell, it's not like there is a form sheet to make it sellable or anything. I'm actually working on an idea to try and get some sales of my Buffalo NY work...it's still in the works but it includes basically taking all of my best stuff and cleaning it up even more, making some Sepia and B&W converts and eventually putting together a catalog (either hardcopy or virtual) and then develope a business card and start mailing out to all the local and regional corporations, businesses and organizations.
I have found that Art stores, galleries and coffee shops can be a good venue...thats where I sold my first photo a couple weeks ago. lol
If SSC had the capibility to be a portal for this kind of business, it would be great because you could get any kinda photo of any city pretty much anywhere.
Bitxofo June 17th, 2005, 04:13 AM Not my photos...
:dunno:
Cliff June 19th, 2005, 06:21 AM I won SGD 500 before in a photo contest.:D
noli June 19th, 2005, 06:52 AM Not me. But Ive never realistically considered it.
BuffCity June 20th, 2005, 09:22 PM I wish I could sit home and get 40 checks in the mail everday...that would be nice.
I imagine if someone really had the money to front and could figure out many locations to sell some photos, it might just be a nice second income...thats what I'm going for.
BuffCity December 25th, 2006, 12:36 AM well I'm making more...just not enough :)
oliver999 December 25th, 2006, 06:22 AM i should invest 5000 usd for a new camera first. lol.
Mr.Bonifacy December 26th, 2006, 08:55 PM Guys,if you made some money from your photos, where did you send photos?papers..etc?
Soulbrotha December 26th, 2006, 09:38 PM i've sold 46 prints on dpcprints. they get most of the cut but it still gets my work into peoples living rooms.
i'm also reasonable with my prices. Most louisville skyline photos go for like 100-200 dollars. my highest one is like 30 bucks.
if those 46 prints had sold for 200 bucks each, i would be set though.
i could still ditch dpcprints, and go independent if i want to. but printing, shipping, and keeping track of orders isn't as easy as it seems.

BuffCity December 28th, 2006, 04:31 AM soul, nice collection.
I don't wanna sell to high myself, but at the same time there is a certain artistic value beyond the expected product profit, so prices are tough to establish, plus you may have to work them a little to make a sale.
I have sold 2 11x14's at $50 each, and a few 8x10's at like $30 each...I don't think I have sold any 5x7's or smaller...tough to make an impression with the small stuff.
In figuring I wanted to upgrade my camera & lens situation...I have decided to push the prices up a bit and see what happens from there.
In the end, I have not really promoted myself that much, I plan to launch a sales campaign on the first of the year...we'll see.
frames, what a pain.
IlEstAndré December 28th, 2006, 06:11 AM how do you get pics on to dpc prints? also, do they print and ship the pics for you? and how much of the money do they take.
Kampflamm December 28th, 2006, 07:12 PM Once made 70 euros selling a picture of Frankfurt to some attorney who wanted to use it for a brochure.

Its not hard. first you have to become a member of DPchallenge.com. i think its $20 a year. Then you just upload photos to your portfolio. The site reviews your photos to make sure they are the right quality, then they approve them for sale. You set the price for how much you want to sell your photos for. you get 50% of the profit, and even more if your buyer also buys a frame along with the picture. They do print and ship the photos for you. I've gotten a lot of prints from them, they are amazing quality. and if you refere a buyer you get 75%.
Soulbrotha December 28th, 2006, 07:40 PM Here are some samlpes of what their prints look like.

Twipsy January 16th, 2007, 06:27 PM In Germany we have a newspaper called "BILD". You can send them your photo and they give you 500 Euros if they publish it. I was very lucky, as the first photo I have send them was published a few days ago and no I will receive my 500 Euros.
Now I have decided to send my best photos to Alamy, a British Stock Photo agency, who promises 65% for the photographer. I have heard that some people made quite a lot of money with Alamy, but I do not believe it until I get my first cheque. First I wanted to send my photos to Getty Images, but they charge you $250 for the first ten photos and $50 for every additional photo just to put them on their website. So you have have to pay quite a lot of money before you get the chance to earn some.
What are your experiences with stock photo agencies?
ZZ-II January 16th, 2007, 07:54 PM i've never made money with a pic, reason: no camera :)
