Thought I'd start a thread about the Postbox development adjacent to the Mailbox. Looks a very substantial development judging by the renders and flythrough on the site www.postboxapartments.com.

http://www.postboxapartments.com/images/development/blockcfromcommst2.jpg

Also nice render of an aerial view showing its a considerable size.

I noticed while walking passed this site the other day that there is actaully some activity going on. I'm not that well up on construction, but it seemed like the land was being prepared for foundations.

Its a bit too lowrise for my liking, the way they started off development when we didn't have renders, it looking it was going to be really tall. The apparent work on the adjacent site sounds interesting though.

It's nowt to do with the skyline - just a bit disappointing to see three or four storey buildings going up in the city centre.

There's work on this site next to the postbox. Not sure if it'sa seconf phase or another development:

And here's the postbox. Quite a big building. Bit of a groundscraper. It's gone up quick though.

Work is progressing on the site next door. The gap between the older building and the postbox shown on Blunthers first pic has been filled in with a steel frame. Sorry about the quality of the pic, i just snapped it with my camera phone on the way past.

Does anyone have any idea what is being built here.

:jippo:

It's harmless enough. I wouldn't mind it if it were somewhere out of the way like Park Central. But next to the Mailbox... that bit could've been really good. Instead of a groundscraper covering about 500 square miles, they should've made a few streets, with a couple of different styles of apartments, with a bit of classy retail on the ground floor, and maybe a few nice pubs, with a central grassy public space with a nice statue of a horse or something...

Isnt that thing being built the other flats/retail or restaurant thing using the old school that was located around there. They were converting some old buildings and mixing them with new buildings. Not sure if its there or somewhere close by.

500 square miles is that? :dunno: God, the council could of at least put some homeless sheltered accomodation in it to make it a bit bigger. Ohwell guess this bastard will just have to do.

Gallagher's (JG) are not normally in the business of actually building their schemes out, instead they tend get them through planning and then sell them on. Postbox II & Typhoo are both therefore likely to be built by others. I suspect that Cala/Earthquake will do Postbox II. I would like to think someone like Urban Splash would do Typhoo but I suspect they do their own planning etc and therefore wouldn't want to pay JGs profit margin.

Typhoo's fate still rests on the outcome of the high court judgement on Curzon Gateway - part of the site is inside MacDermid's COMAH consultation zone.

I wouldn't read too much into these old visuals. I was in the Glenn Howells office a couple of weeks back and in their meeting room they have 3 or 4 models. One looked like what I assumed to be the tower section of Typhoo wharf. If it is, from what I recall it was elliptical, with bar restaurant space at the bottom and cantilevers over the wharf. It was much more refined than these early renderings but guess we'll have to wait and see.

BTW the view of the skyline from their office is incredible, and must be one of the best seats in the house. They are based at the top of the block with the mooch furniture shop at street level. lovely office.

Whats wrong with Birmignahm at the moment, we dont half like our balconies :hahaha: Are we the only city in the UK that can get away with architecture like this? I went to thessolonaki in Greece not long ago and the amount of Buildings with balconies just gave that feel of a community. Brum to me feels like a real community, unlike any other city I've been to in the UK. apart form those wee villages in London which also offer that.

Also Brum in the sun, just looks splendid - I have to agree, living in a Modern city sure has its plus sides.

Which is what, the Wall of Memories? loads of Wedding Pictures taken there from when it was near the Registry office.

A mauseleum for the War Dead, and a place where married couples have their first row, it's a easy mistake to make, getting them confused.

Especially if you're thick like me.

Oh - have you seen (what I think) is the new Register Office opposite the CBSO centre? It is wonderful - very blocky and lots of render, glass etc and some really dark oak/mahogany panelling externally. I think it's my new favourite building in Brum (for a while anyway).

Yeah, they'll shift the layabouts once the areas done (well they'll probably move themselves with all the Yuppies knocking around...

I THINK the Register Office is next door to the Charles Church development - right opposite the CBSO Centre. Even if it's not the Resister Office (which may be in Holliday Wharf thinking about it) I still love the building. 2 of my fave buildings next to each other - the CBSO Centre and this new one :)

There are no details but Postbox II is now under construction. As the contractor is the same as phase I, I assume that the client is either Cala or Earthquake. The JG Land website has a visual but it is a courtyard shot so no real clues as to what this new phase will look like, but it seems more Glenn Howells than phase I. I know from the press that it incorporates the listed building facing onto Commercial Street. That's about it I'm afraid

I wasn't really liking this before when i saw it underconstruction but actually it looks quite nice + you can walk through the development very easily, it has a well designed pedestrian throughfare in the middle & if the site opposit is developed then it could actually go somewhere too...
