Main Roads has started designing the new 2.7 kilometre $A149 million bridge, which will join the Houghton Highway as the equal longest bridge over water in Australia. The new three-lane bridge will be built between the existing Hornibrook and Houghton Highway bridges and is scheduled for completion by Christmas 2009. Construction is due to start in late 2007.

The new bridge will be used in conjunction with the existing Houghton Highway, with one bridge dedicated to traffic traveling toward Redcliffe and the other for traffic leaving the peninsula. This will help improve safety and reduce traffic congestion for Redcliffe’s growing population.

The new bridge will also have a combined pedestrian and cycleway. The government is also investigating the possibility of using one lane of the bridge for a bus or transit lane.

Two Questions:

1. First of all, how high from the water are the bridges. The pic makes them look really low but I imagine that boats must be able to past under right?

2. What is Hornibrook bridge used for? It seems smaller than the other two which makes sense for being a pedestrian bridge but I don't know, it doesn't look like there's any cars on it, so I imagine it might be used as an express for buses to pass but I don't know. Don't know bout too much roadways systems outside of Sydney.

Hornibrook Bridge dates back to the 1930s and was the first bridge - its only used for cyclists and pedestrians now. There is talk of tearing it down as its made of wood and will be very hard to repair.

As far as roads in Australia go - Sydney is not much chop. Melbourne and Brisbane have much more impressive freeway networks though much is being done in Sydney to connect its network.

Hornibrook is a fishing bridge bascially lol.
I havnt been over for quite some time but when i have been,... its a pedestrian/fishing bridge.

I wouldnt even trust it to support a car lol.

And if those are renders of the new bridge.. needs more design. infact...
Just build a higher 8 lane bridge, then demolish the existing one when finished.

Destroying any public buildings is an outcry in Australia! I live in Melbourne and the rebuilding of Spencer Street Station (Southern Cross to be renamed) is a disaster!

^^^ You have got to be kidding right? The new SCS is fantastic, especially considering the absolute eyesore it is replacing. It will be a truely word class station upon completition. There has been problems with budget and time, there often is with such large projects... but by no stretch of the imagination is the project a disaster.
