Köbtke August 20th, 2005, 11:34 AM This is probably one of my favourite stadiums in the world.
Perfectly designed for its sport. Extremely beautiful and modern, but without any of the nonesense that comes with so many modern stadiums. Just a perfect place to watch football.
traveler August 20th, 2005, 11:54 PM Probably the best-looking stadium in Europe. Paulo. What is the name of the architect?
Köbtke August 21st, 2005, 02:07 AM Probably the best-looking stadium in Europe. Paulo. What is the name of the architect?
It was designed by Portuguese architect, Manuel Salgado.
Phobos August 21st, 2005, 02:24 AM This stadium is perfect.I don't say that because it's in my hometown,it's just a stadium that is magnificent!

vertigosufferer August 25th, 2005, 02:43 PM I like the way if you sit at the goal end of the ground, you actually get a view of the skyline on the opposite side ;) very fitting for this forum. Great ground, just shows simplicity can be just as eyecatching as being flashy.

Filipe_Golias October 23rd, 2005, 07:51 PM Wheres the part thats surposed to look like a dragon
There isn't. The name Dragon is due to the nickname of the team - "Dragons" - which is taken from the dragon resting on top of the crown of the club's emblem (also present in the city's arms)

Let's first see how they do this season.
easysurfer November 21st, 2005, 08:39 PM It's a nice stadium, but for some of you to call it the best in Europe? You obviously need to take a closer look around the continent. There are lots that have recently been built or are nearly finished that are just as good and better.

Welly April 4th, 2006, 06:39 PM Soulless. And the interior designers look like they've time-travelled straight from the 1980s. If you think that's beautiful, I wouldn't like to throw one up your missus.
Petronius April 4th, 2006, 06:48 PM ^^ you're just jealous.. were this in England or France and it would be considered the best stadium ... it's just because it's in portugal people feel like they can diss it.. bloody hell :ohno: it's funny how some people are so negative towards Portugal.. never really understood why
and what you said about the 1980's is just H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S :hilarious: you seem to know very little about architecture...

Petronius April 4th, 2006, 09:38 PM ^^ you don't have to like Portugal or the Portuguese. But coming to a thread about a Portuguese stadium ,and make those remarks, especially stating things that are not true (80s?? where? Jesus if you're an architect I wonder where you studied) just proves your state of jealousy ... whatever.

Look, I appreciate this thread is in English and therefore not in your mother tongue, so you might have difficulty understanding what I'm saying, but nowhere did I say the architecture of that stadium was from the 1980s. I said the interior design was.
And if you can't handle somebody having a differing opinion than you, may I suggest a forum is not the ideal place for you.
Check out a few of these videos of the inside of the new quadrants at Old Trafford.

Now, I appreciate that coming from Portugal, you've hardly been exposed to radical interior design and may be a few years behind more advanced countries, but I'm sure even you half-wits can see the difference. One looks a place I'd be proud to take my high-powered business associates. The other looks like they've picked up the furniture second hand from an East European flea market.

I guess that's why Portugal and Italy keep on winning international interior design awards, whereas english interior design keps on being radically different from the rest of Europe. I know you like to be and act different - we understand.............

hilarious. I don't give a toss about you might say about one of the nicest football stadiums in the world. You're just proving your utter ignorance. And at least I can speak your language and several others while you're stuck to yours.
Petronius April 4th, 2006, 10:47 PM to say that the interior design of FCPorto's stadium seems to be from the 80s just proves how much you understand of interior design... :|

Why do you keep responding to me then?
Look, let's not start lowering ourselves to a slanging match. We're all better than that. I differ with my opinions to yours with regard this stadium, but that's all it is, a differing of opinion. I certainly respect both your views and urge you both to carry on contributing to this marvellous forum.

Golan Trevize May 1st, 2006, 02:13 PM An expansion would destroy the natural equilibrium of the stadium

Arpels May 1st, 2006, 05:09 PM expansion? ther is no expansion propose :sly:
O Alemao May 1st, 2006, 05:57 PM and a expansion would create TOO MUCH new seats!! I mean current capacity = 50 000 and current attendance = 39 000!!
It is great and kind of unique how it is!!!
Arpels May 1st, 2006, 08:12 PM yup agree
Its AlL gUUd May 1st, 2006, 11:22 PM It seems there a lot of empty place that could be used for a future expansion isn't it?
Portugal don't need bigger stadia, even scotland got a higher average attendance, i think.
Arpels May 1st, 2006, 11:27 PM thats what i think too, better to keep the money to future repair's
Iggybumtastic May 2nd, 2006, 12:03 AM Portugal don't need bigger stadia, even scotland got a higher average attendance, i think.
The Scottish League has the 6th highest average attendances in Europe. Remarkable for a country of 5 million people!! Their average is almost double that of Portugals!!
Its AlL gUUd May 2nd, 2006, 12:11 AM ^^ yep you lot should be proud.
Socrates May 2nd, 2006, 12:21 AM ^^ yep you lot should be proud.
If the English were as passionate about thier football as us Scots maybe Arsenal could take more than 2000 supporters to a Champions League semi final.
2000 supporters for a CL semi is not something to be proud of.
Iggybumtastic May 2nd, 2006, 12:58 AM Rangers/Celtic would be disappointed with 2000 travelling fans for a pre-season friendly, let alone a Champions League Semi-Final. I was shocked when I heard Arsenal took 2000 fans abroad!! Even Hearts took 4000 to Switzerland for a run-of-the-mill UEFA cup game (Basle)!!
Hibs took 1500 to the Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk for a UEFA cup 1st round game this season!!! That's almost the same as what Arsenal took to a Champions League Semi Final!!! :eek2:
http://www.theredcardscotland.org/news/2006/jan/180106_hibs_ukraine_orphange.html :
Arsenal went right down in my books when I heard what a tiny away support they have got!!
chester84 May 2nd, 2006, 01:07 AM fanatastic stadium, one of my favourites in europe. does anyone go to fc porto games? does the stadiums design give for a good atmosphere?
Iggybumtastic May 2nd, 2006, 01:24 AM I was in Porto for the Rangers game. Superb stadium, with an amazing atmosphere, but that was because of the amount of Rangers fans in the stadium! I have always said it is fans that make atmosphere, not stadiums (although certain designs can help an atmosphere).
Put 50000 noisy fans in an open bowl, and the atmosphere will still be superb if the fans make enough noise.
Its AlL gUUd May 2nd, 2006, 01:55 PM ^^ can i ask, how come there are lots of u Rangers fans on these boards, where are all those celts
btw stop bigging urself up, its getting alittle too much, nearly in every thread. Bubomb started it all off posting pics with Rangers' fans, Ibrox etc. there are so many threads like this.
Iggybumtastic May 2nd, 2006, 02:04 PM There are only 2 Rangers fans on the board. Celtic fans can't afford PC's, they spend all their dole money on Playstation 2 games........and Jellies!
Golan Trevize May 2nd, 2006, 08:33 PM The atmosphere on the stadium the last time I was there was amazing, 50 000 people with their scarfs raised while the club anthem was sang, it gave me goose bumps, fucking amazing. It is very easy to go to the stadium, you can leave your car on a shopping mall miles away from the stadium, catch the subway right nex to the mall and go all the way to Dragon Stadium. 3 of the 4 subway lines of the city end their run at the stadium.

hum?? April 10th, 2008, 02:19 PM Very beautiful in did
www.sercan.de April 10th, 2008, 02:22 PM It has got "only" 96 suites
And th main stand has got only 1 level.
The East has got 2 levels
Why?
lpioe April 10th, 2008, 06:34 PM I guess they wanted a symmetric stadium and two different types of suites and there is not enough room for two levels of the bigger suites on the main stand. Because of that the suites in the mainstand look very high, roomheight seems about 4-5m
www.sercan.de April 10th, 2008, 07:16 PM the main stand ones have got more seats and rows infront of the suites
or those are just clubs seats (lounge is behind those glasses) and all 96 suites are at the east stand
EPA001 April 12th, 2008, 02:55 PM For some reason I have always liked this Stadium more than I like the Benfica Stadium. This one always strikes me as beautiful and impressive although the Benica stadium is the bigger of the two! I can not explain it really, I just like this one better.
www.sercan.de April 12th, 2008, 03:23 PM Yeah. This one has a special atmosphere
Its clean, calm. smooth etc
coimbra April 19th, 2008, 08:55 PM Very elegant and dignified, probably the most elegant stadium built for Euro 2004.
OPO.RVK April 22nd, 2008, 04:08 PM It has got "only" 96 suites
And th main stand has got only 1 level.
The East has got 2 levels
Why?
The reason of the stands in the back of the goals being with just one level its because the stadium is in an high point, in wich the non existence of a
2nd level opens to the people that is inside the stadium a view to a valley that as a range of kilometers.
To the people that are in the outside of the stadium, walking in the square or passing in car in the highway , the openings give the possibility of seeing the people in the 2nd level and have a general view of the "party" inside.
At night the effect its more spetacular.:)

MP fan April 23rd, 2009, 04:11 PM THIS STADIUM IS REALLY AWESOME! Today, is the 27Th aniversary of Jorge Nuno de Lima Pinto da Costa's presidence and the inauguration of Dragão Caixa Arena, the new pavillon to Handball, Hoquei and Basketball. The architect is the same of the stadium. This area has the stadium, the Dolce Vita shopping, the arena, the subway station named Estádio do Dragão (Line A, B, C and E), and in construction the Antas Premiere.

What's the most popular sport in Portugal after football?
Hard to say. Portugal has huge a tradition in rink hockey but that sport is currently having passing through a dark period. There's also futsal, basketball, handball, volleyball, etc. Handball is the sport with more athletes after football.
(To be honest, the most popular sport after football is the one were Benfica leads the league :D )
MP fan April 24th, 2009, 12:23 AM Thanks.

Maybe hockey, Portugal national team has tradition and several trophys and Porto team win europe league and Cers cup many times. A sport very popular to, is the rally especially in the north region.

Oh c'mon! Just look at TV ratings from sports when Benfica is doing well. Have you ever watched a futsal match before Benfica came into the game? Isn't the handball league a bit more popular now that Benfica is a powerhouse again? What about this year's basketball league? Is it or is it not true that hockey lost a bit of popularity and power during these last years?
I was just making a joke but it's not far from truth.
JimB April 24th, 2009, 01:24 AM I love this stadium. So simple. So beautiful.
Normally, I wouldn't like a stadium with two ends so much smaller than the sides - especially two open ends. But the views over the city make it totally worthwhile.
Certainly, this is among my favourite stadiums anywhere.

I don't agree, but that Benfica has more suporters is a fact. Actually, Porto become more and more suporters and more european prestigy because recent campagnains in the Champions legue, but this is not the topic, and this is always subjective.

www.sercan.de July 26th, 2009, 11:35 AM but small screen
OPO.RVK July 27th, 2009, 01:29 PM In the stadium, live, they have a good size and accomplish their mission.
The good part od those screens is they are rotative, so when there's no game they turn to the outside, with the one in the photo facing an Highway and the other turn's towards a plaza and a mall.
In that way the club gets more revenues with publicity in days without games.

matthemod October 14th, 2010, 10:50 PM This has got to be one of my favourite stadiums. It's just so beautiful, elegant, functional and even though 6 years have passed, does not look in the slightest bit aged.
