TeKnO_Lx November 8th, 2004, 03:37 PM i´ve benn there i think it´s better the inside that de outside but i would not prefer so colourful colors , i would like colours like white in de roofs and grey in the seats . In de outside it looks more like brazil than sporting lisbon :bash: carlspannard u went to de game portugal vs spain? How lucky :)
carlspannoosh November 8th, 2004, 03:55 PM I wish. Its a pic from a google search. :)
TeKnO_Lx November 8th, 2004, 03:59 PM lolol
Dr. Dubai November 8th, 2004, 04:00 PM it's a great stadium, but is ist always full?
TeKnO_Lx November 8th, 2004, 05:26 PM weel im not a sporting fan but i know that in home days is about 30.000 to 35.000 in "big games" like with benfica and porto its gets its maximum? ateandence 52.000. In euro 2004 it was always full :)
skyperu34 November 10th, 2004, 12:41 AM colorful but nice
Alexander21 November 10th, 2004, 02:04 AM I have been to this stadium (Euro 2004 QF - Greece 1 France 0). Its a great stadium. It is very colouorful in terms of its seating but its facilities are great and you get a great view from anywhere you sit. Also it has great accoustics which for me is more imporrtant than the colour of the seats.
hngcm November 13th, 2004, 07:35 AM PLEASE change the colors....
jclornton November 13th, 2004, 01:04 PM WHat yucky colours, wow what were they trying to achieve, the physical stucture is beautiful but spoiled but some lame colour artists mixed up mind!!
ManchesterISwonderful November 14th, 2004, 04:43 PM WHat yucky colours, wow what were they trying to achieve,
So, the stadium doesn't look empty when Sporting's playing at home.
Great idea....for teams that can't quite fill huge stadiums. Nothing worse than playing infront of empty stands.
Dong Ha Lee November 14th, 2004, 05:04 PM Awesome stadium.
The seat colouring makes it look as if people are there even though they aren't.
heavyzakura334 November 15th, 2004, 10:47 AM Well, I prefer Benfica eventhough I am Mexican, but I must say the Sporting Stadium is awesome

LEAFS FAN December 5th, 2004, 03:41 AM Great stadium for a crappy team!
Paulo2004 December 27th, 2004, 02:03 AM A team that is in third in the Portuguese soccer League and that is through to the next round of the UEFA cup does not seem to be a crappy team?!
The Game Is Up January 6th, 2005, 12:04 PM Even though I bleed blue and white I got much respect for the Sportinguistas. With the exception of those who support the small clubs, the Sportinguistas are the most admirable for sticking to their club through thick and (mostly) thin. Remember, they have to live side-by-side with the vermelhos. I can't even wish that to my worst enemies. ;)
On topic, don't care about seat colors nor the tiles but the design and layout are class! For a large stadium it is very tight and steep! Very conducive to a proper futebol atmosphere. And, to top it off, Spain, France and the Netherlands were eliminated in the same place. So it already has history. :D
Too bad it has to be occupied by the 3rd most important team in the country. Speaking of which...I read that they'll open up capacity for the derby match. It's 47,500. They say that they can raise it to 53,000. How is that possible? Don't they already count the executive boxes as part of capacity? :dunno:
Esaminare il Futuro January 7th, 2005, 09:49 AM ..
Esaminare il Futuro January 7th, 2005, 09:50 AM I love this one! i never saw a stadium like this. The effect of the chairs it`s well thought! But the colors could be less circus! Interior looks fantastic!
Crapy team!lol
Fern January 7th, 2005, 01:27 PM through thick and (mostly) thin.
Hahah, so true!!!
Remember, they have to live side-by-side with the vermelhos. I can't even wish that to my worst enemies. ;)

Lss911 January 9th, 2005, 01:30 AM Yeah a crapy team that won Benfica this night 2-1!lol
Both teams have the same level in my opinion: so if benfica it`s a good team sporting would be as well a good team and if benfica it`s a crapy team sporting would be the same too!!

The Game Is Up January 9th, 2005, 07:09 AM I must say...gotta tip my hat to the Sportinguistas. They exposed the weaknesses of the vermelhos. Ricardo barely got challenged, apart of that goal that shouldn't have been counted.

TeKnO_Lx January 9th, 2005, 12:18 PM Trapattoni is just a too defense coach.. with the type of players we got we should have made the 2-1 at least when scp was down to 10 players. I Just wish him to go away!!

Blahblahblahblah.... U should keep ur mouth shut because u don't want everyone to know what a scandalous disgrace this game was. I didn't know diving was now part of the game and u got sent off for that!! IMO Sa Pinto and Liedson should be severely punished for such anti fair play behaviour (cheating) to say the least.

traveler August 27th, 2005, 02:18 PM I believe that Portugal has the most impressive stadiums in all Europe. No question about. The sporting stadium is the best for safety in Europe according to FIFA. And one of the best for its technical design in Europe. That is a beautiful stadium.
alfista159 August 27th, 2005, 06:58 PM yes it was in risk of colapse
Dear god! The actual one is way way way better!
2005 August 27th, 2005, 07:10 PM Brilliant stadium if Tottenham leave the Lane which i hope they don't then the people who designed this stadium should design one for us.
The Game Is Up August 27th, 2005, 11:33 PM Athor? i didn`t understand it...the other one was not safe? Was it on risk of colapse?
It's a matter of perception, of course. Basically, when the FPF decided to bid for the last Euro championship, they knew that UEFA would demand modern facilities as part of the entire bid. That meant that there had to be money invested by clubs, local govt, private business, etc.. That meant that some old grounds had to go (including "O Museu" a.k.a. the old Estadio Da Luz).
FYI, this is what the old ground looked like:

This was your standard concrete and metal ground that had a track, which was unnecessary because athletics could be held at the Jamor or the Belenenses ground. There was no roof except to cover the directors of the club who sat at one side. That wasn't good enough for UEFA, obviously. It was probably more unsafe for the players than for the crowd, since they had to be careful not to slid away from the touchline or they break something. There had to be something to explain why FCP didn't win more matches at that place. :bash:
hngcm August 28th, 2005, 07:44 AM I just want to know who was in charge of coloring the stadium...
koskaar August 28th, 2005, 10:08 AM Must have been a colour-blind person.

Nikom October 2nd, 2005, 04:21 PM Alavalde XXI home of Sporting CP!!
Built from scratch, the new equipment was born right next to the old José de Alvalade Stadium, for decades the home of Sporting Clube de Portugal.
It was the only stadium already planned even before the UEFA chose Portugal to organize the Euro 2004, and it received from the ruling body of the European football a five-star rating, meaning it can host any event, including the final matches of the European competitions.

Could have been so, although I think one gets used to it.
JimB November 29th, 2005, 12:36 PM I like the multi-coloured seats. They are consistent with the colourful exterior of the stadium. Furthermore, they help to disguise empty seats. Even if the ground is only half full (as it often is), the fact that there aren't big blocks of one coloured seats on view means that the stadium looks fuller than it actually is.
I really like this stadium. In many respects, I prefer it to Benfica's. My only complaint is with the big moat / ditch between the stands and the pitch. Unnecessary.

No. It wasn't "all". You lashed out petulantly at the bloke. If an altruistic desire to inform and educate had been your sole intention, you wouldn't have tiresomely added: :bash: Nor would you have written, "if u don´t know just don´t say anything. djesus".
There are plenty on this board for whom English is not a first language and it would be excessively dull if, like you, every time they made a mistake a natural English speaker corrected them in an irritable manner.

Fair enough and understandable. But, in future, try correcting / informing people without becoming so irritable about it. Americans / British / Aussies / South Africans don't make these linguistic mistakes deliberately to antagonize you. So you shouldn't go out of your way to antagonize them.

You have to understand that after regaining our independence from Spain back in 1640, any spanish word or phrase that influences our national language - portuguese, is immediately corrected. 365 years are not enough to wipe out our differences.
People should be more careful when they refer to names (whatever the nationality). Portuguese is portuguese, not spanish!!!!

topalex March 9th, 2010, 02:03 PM I like this stadium a lot apart from 2 things:
I hate the colour of those seats. Its just a personal preference but I dont like that seat design in any stadium!
I also dont like that moat...is this really necessary in this day and age? It seperates the fans from the play not just by huge distance but also...almost symbolically! Like the 2 are not part of the same experience.
Other than those 2 issues this is a great looking stadium in a great city.

Andre_idol October 26th, 2010, 02:53 AM Due to SEVERAL grass problems (mainly because of the roof design) this stadium can in a near future have an artificial pitch. Honestly my vote goes to that...tired of crappy grass. We had 4 more injured players...I bet that two of them got the injury because of the pitch :bash:
The club had to give up concerts revenues because at the time they thought they found the perfect pitch they had an AC/DC concert...and you can imagine how the grass was after that.
zsMash October 26th, 2010, 10:47 AM Very nice pics!
In Portugal its raining too much or its just that the stadium grass is bad?
PaulFCB October 26th, 2010, 05:05 PM The stadium is a jewel but why really keep those nasty colored seats?

About the neighborhood, why is it so bad? Because of a lot of flats that give a working class atmosphere?
Nikom October 26th, 2010, 10:16 PM Very nice pics!

For some reason the stadium grass is always in a bad condition, every year, it's the same :bash:
The stadium is a jewel but why really keep those nasty colored seats?

Sporting team in the last years has been very poor, and didn't won a single cup or championship . Also the ticket prices and the late hours of the games do not help.
About the neighborhood, it isn't so bad, the stadium is between a upper class neighborhood and a medium/lower class neighborhood and in front of an important urban interface.
PaulFCB October 27th, 2010, 03:09 PM Well, the reason because the seats are randomly colored is probably because people knew when the stadium was built that it will very rarely fill up and this way it would give a better impression.
I don' understand high ticket prices even though I'm not familiar with the economic situation over there during a economical crisis you could cut some prices especially because you might actually bring more people to the stadium and not suffer financial losses anyway.
Agree late hours are bad, I don't know how bus/subways work in Lisbon but here if a game ends after 23:00-23:30 you might have big trouble catching a ride home if you're not close to the stadium. On the map I saw that Alvalade has infact 2 metro station pretty close, a lot of bus lines and not to mention the freeways.
Well, Sporting hasn't won a title since Laszlo Boloni and played a UEFA Cup final that unfortunately they lost it on Alvalade against CSKA since then, a lot of 2nd place finishes that may have frustrated the supporters but as much as I know, Sporting has a huge fan base just behind Benfica and about 100.000 Socios?
If I'll come to Lisbon I'll surely try to do it when I could catch a important game.
Aka October 27th, 2010, 05:09 PM a lot of 2nd place finishes that may have frustrated the supporters
No, it didn't. By the contrary. Everything was perfect during those four years just for a single reason: they finished above Benfica, and that's what really matters to them. It was last year that all started to colapse... Imagine why.
Nikom October 27th, 2010, 06:13 PM Well, the reason because the seats are randomly colored is probably because people knew when the stadium was built that it will very rarely fill up and this way it would give a better impression.

Sporting do not have a number of fans like Benfica, but has a good number of fans who follow the team throughout the country and around Europe. There is a special feeling among fans of Sporting, and I, being one of them, know what I talking about. But since the UEFA cup final lost at home we feel frustrated, and with the constant second places in the league, this frustration has increased. I remember for about 15/20 years to go almost all the weekends to the old stadium with my father and the stadium was always full (yet been 18 years without winning a single championship : 1981/82 to 1999/00) . Today, there are few games where the stadium fills up (with Benfica, Porto and in big games in European competitions maybe).
About the metro, i think that it's not the problem, it works till 01:00.
But you will not regret going to see a game in Alvalade, fortunately I see a lot of tourists in the stadium supporting Sporting
Remembering old times

endrity October 28th, 2010, 01:53 AM ^ wow, too bad that a much better stadium can't fill up like it used to. I am sure the ticket prices have smth to do with in, no way a huge fan base like that suddenly disappears. Either that, or like in Italy, the availability of games on TV means more people like watching the game from their sofa at home.
Andre_idol October 28th, 2010, 02:26 AM In Portugal its raining too much or its just that the stadium grass is bad?
Pff the weather is perfect. But the roof does not allow sunlight to reach certain points of the field. Than those parts affect all the other that have no problem with shades...this results in a overall crappy grass.

Let's say Sporting fans are on a identity crisis since José Roquette became president (in 1996).
Andre_idol October 30th, 2010, 03:24 AM Today a newspaper says that the club will send to FIFA a requirement to indeed install an artificial pitch next season.
To add to the roof design, the angle of the stands also helps for the extreme temperature amplitude that you have from one side of the pitch to another. The stands make the north side reach extremely hot temperatures while in the south it gets cooler...resulting in a pretty bad grass.
Aka October 30th, 2010, 04:15 AM Today a newspaper says that the club will send to FIFA a requirement to indeed install an artificial pitch next season.

Again...95% of chances to this stadium have an artificial pitch...words from the club president.
JYDA November 2nd, 2010, 03:16 PM This is quite shocking. I never thought I'd see the day that a major European club in a favourable climate would be playing on plastic. I guess the stadium design flaw must be really severe to resort to this.

As you probably know, part of the old Estádio da Luz was demolished while Benfica was still playing there. When they had to close the stadium for good, Benfica made some matches at Estádio Nacional.
There was never a problem with Sporting, since the old Alvalade was demolished almost at the same time the new one was finished.

Amsterdam ArenA.

I know Amsterdam Arena has a similar design, but that doesn't makes it better. It sucks.

Not confirmed yet but it might disappear next Summer.

That would bring some blind spots in the upper tier. The idea was adding a temporary structure on the space between the stands and the field, but the angle would be so ridiculous that I have no words to describe it (oh wait! I said "ridiculous").
Currently, Sporting is trying to know if they have that many interested people for those seats. If they do, they'll probably do it; if not, forget it. I mean, it's amazing when Sporting drags 30k to Alvalade, and they're thinking in adding extra seats? Whatever...

But you (sportinguistas) are also saying the same for the stairs when the ones at Dragão are shining for years.
Andre_idol October 25th, 2011, 01:08 AM I just think the contrast won´t be as good. Now if they change all the seats to green...would be nice to see how it would look like. Now it´s just a green overload...
And white looks good on camera...Barcelos has white stairs too and up close it doesn´t look good. And there´s less people on them...they would require many painting jobs.

Couldn't disagree more. It only pleases the eyes and is truly wonderful when seen up close. I enjoyed my trip there far more than to Estadio da Luz or Emirates Stadium.
PaulFCB February 26th, 2012, 05:03 PM It kinda hurts my eyes tbh, even National Arena in Bucharest is bugging me a bit with those Red-Yellow and Blue seats of different intensities mixed up and doesn't help at what it's supposed to help, giving the impression the stands are not empty.
Apart from this, the stadium is great.

matthemod December 9th, 2012, 05:49 PM Now, I know the multi-colour seats is an optical illusion to make a place seem busier, but if this place had a uniform set of green seats the whole way around, it would make it look so much better.
Nikom December 9th, 2012, 06:26 PM There are some projects to change the seats and close the moat:

Andre_idol December 10th, 2012, 12:25 AM Sporting supporters aprove those multi-color seats?
Most of them no. There were some talks to change the seats to all-green and close the moat but I think it won´t happen soon.
dududuarte December 12th, 2012, 05:11 AM I just know these stadiums by TV and pictures, but let me give my opinion.
Despite the multicolor seats, I like more Alvalade than the Da Luz stadium. Da Luz is bigger, perhaps more impressive, but Alvalade is more compact, friendly to the supporter. It's a very particular and subjective thing.
Alanzeh December 28th, 2012, 02:30 PM I just don't approve the big distance between the crowd and the field, excpt that is an amazing stadium

Even a Sporting fan has to admit that the stadium is far from being supporter friendly, because Tomás isn't a stadium designer and he never will be.
That useless (and dangerous) moat,
The distance from the field,
The fact that it has four entrances only (what was he thinking?),
Screens in the middle of the stands.
And, despite not being related to supporters themselves, its structure leads to a pathetic pitch quality, which ruins the quality of the game for... the fans.

As I said, it was a very particular and subjective feeling. I just know the stadium by TV and google images. It's more "visual" than anything.

So, because of the moat, the stadium isn't friendly to the supporter ?
Everydoby hates that stupid thing, but that doens't ruin the stadium :) Even the screens are ok, they were small, and they changed it, now they're fine
And there are not four entrances, at least seven, countig with VIP acess, away supporters and disable :) And the main entraces, they're four, they're large enough, even in the big games, i don't wait in line, so, what's wrong ? There is no problem with the entries, since they are large enough to drain all fans.
As you can see here, they're large,

About the picth.. Arquitect's stupidity :bash: The stadium it's not perfect, thanks Taveira, but it's a great place to watch football with quality for sure :okay:
Tiago_20 December 30th, 2012, 07:08 PM The worst of this stadium are, for sure, the multi-colored seats.
when you are inside the stadium and see it empty is very ugly...
The architect should have used two, three colors, the colors of the club and not all the rainbow.
unfortunately we have more cases like that all the same architect.
traveler February 25th, 2013, 11:57 PM very nice stadium.
