View Full Version : Telephoto lenses??
TB June 17th, 2005, 01:46 AM hey just curious about getting an available telephoto lens for my camera, and i dont understand how it works!?
my camera has a 3.2x optical zoom, but the telepohoto lens available for my camera model is 1.94x so what i dont understand is how can i possibly get a better zoom when i have to take off my 3.2x lens and put on a 1.94x !!
do telephoto lenses use a different calculation or something?
anyone who can tell me how this works id greatly appreciate it
thanks
Nick in Atlanta June 17th, 2005, 01:49 AM @TB: We are talking about a DSLR, right? Or is this a digital camera that can have a converter attached?
TB June 17th, 2005, 01:56 AM not a dslr, a digital cam that can have a converter attached :)

I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ20, which isn't a DSLR, but has a 12x optical lens. Panasonic offers a converter that multiplies the attached lens 1.5x. I don't have it, but basically it screws onto the end of the attached lens and gives it a maximum power of 18x optical. Because 12 multiplied by 1.5 equals 18.
You also have to turn on "converter" in the camera's menu and you need a special mount for the bottom of the camera that gives it extra support on a tripod.
If your converter is compatible with your camera then it should screw on the end of the current lens. Check you instructions for any other changes you need to make.
If everything is correct, then you should have a maximum tele of 6.2x optical, because 3.2 times 1.94 equals 6.2. Good luck.
MILIUX June 17th, 2005, 02:37 AM Firstly you don't measure the focal distance by multiplication. You multiply the 1.5 with mm. eg. 18-70 x 1.5.
TB June 17th, 2005, 04:43 AM im pretty sure i have to take off my lens, put on an adapter and then put on the telephoto lens but keep my original lens off. i have looked at pictures of the telephoto lens and it does not look like you can attach your original lens on it all. like, at all. This is why i am so confused about it.
this is what i have

maybe this helps. i am a total newbie when it come to cameras but all i know is that i wish a bought a camera with a better zoom, but its too late know so this is what i need to do.
so after all this what will my zoom be? lol anyone know?
thanks for your help Nick in Atlanta
hoogbouw010 June 17th, 2005, 10:36 AM The teleconverter goes over the existing lens. This teleconverter is hollow on the other side, providing space for your existing lens. Not all teleconverters give good results, for example focus can be a problem. It might be more convenient to buy a superzoom (10x or 12x) compact digicam, instead of carrying and taking on and off this teleconverter.

You don't, but in the P&S market, where focallength in mm aren't really indicative since nobody knows what it means, its a better marketing tool than saying its 200mm.

3,
thanks
Nick explained it very well, you will have a 3,2 x 1,94 = 6,208 That is how it works.
Nick in Atlanta June 17th, 2005, 08:35 PM TB, I can't imagine how the lens on your camera now could come off without doing some major damage to your camera. If you bought all that equipment from Fuji, which I see your camera is, then I'd give them a call at their Canada location and ask them for some help.
I'd hate to see you break your camera trying to increas the zoom.
TB June 19th, 2005, 12:14 AM no no i get it now :) thanks everyone. i didnt buy this stuff yet i just want to. so ya, im not gonna try to take my lens off or anything silly but that is what i thought i needed to do to put the other lens on, but as Hoogbouw010 said i just put it over my existing lens, i just take that ring i take off ... silly me. but i totally understand this now :)
thanks again Nick in Atlanta, Hoogbouw010 and everyone else who helped answer my question :)
