I would have been a great building if it was built in 1985. It seems like it's only agenda is being tall on a great spot, which doesn't quite do it for me any more in 2009. Nice pic by the way. :)

This thing looks great from the street. But going North on Lake Shore Dr. or coming in from i-55 this thing is almost unnoticeable. I have to say I'm incredibly disappointed in it. It is a lot skinnier than I thought. oh well...

I think its a respectable piece of structure that recognizes the environment in which it arose. It does not overwhelm the landmarks that surround it, while making its presence felt. It appears thin when viewed from certain angles and bulky on others. The spire could have been better, it could've been larger and more noticeable, wherein it allows the building to taper off like a needle. Overall, its color and reflective glass curtain gives it a timeless look, just like its surrounding structures. Been here in Dubai for 2 years and being here has taught me that one building does not make a city great, its everything in the city. A structure that has a relationship with its surroundings is so much more effective than a lonely super structure that is disconnected from the rest of its neighbors. This is where Trump tower succeeds. I really miss Chicago, i wish i can go back soon.

The external construction elevator will probably be one of the last things to come down. I'm sure they don't want construction workers having to use internal elevators, since much of the building is "open" already.

I'm not sure what you mean. The buildings are leaning (distorted) in these shots. I do, however, apply perspective correction to a lot of my photos. Could you give me an example of one of your photos that looks too distorted?

well I guess you're right. the buildings are distorted, a little. I think you actually manage to create compositions that hide this, which is huge kudos to your talent.

I've just started to use my wide again. I definitely need to work on it. I will post some later this evening.

For being so tall, it really just "fits in" there nicely. It really doesn't garner attention anywhere near the likes of Hancock or Sears.

I like it, it's almost as if it's always been there. It looks so skinny from a distance.

The construction elevator has started to come down. I noticed yesterday that it no longer extends up to the top, but perhaps only 2/3rds of the building. I can't wait to get some "clean" shots of the building now!

kamin didn't like the spire, but I can't help but feel that the building would be terribly squat without it. Its extra bit of verticality does add a lot, I feel.

Does anyone have an update on Trumps finances for this building? Is he in litigation?

I'm quite impressed how Trump seems to come into view in SO many places. I take walks every day around the loop and N. Michigan, and it's amazing how many times I turn around and this tower is looming ahead. It's got that perfect place right in the middle of the action, not a lot cramping it in, and it's so tall.

I like it a lot. There was a ton of hype about this for years, but I'm satisfied.

Just about this time last year, as the economy was racing downhill faster than an Olympic skier, the promoters of the Chicago Spire announced that Ty Warner, the reclusive founder and chief executive officer of Westmont-based toymaker Ty Inc., had signed a contract to buy the sprawling 10,000-plus-square-foot penthouse on the Spire's 141st and 142nd floors.

The asking price was $40 million, though the actual sales price was not disclosed.

The Spire remains a hole in the ground at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive, of course, but there is another nice penthouse out there: It's the one atop the almost-finished Trump International Hotel & Tower, which I got a look at recently while gathering info for my upcoming review of the 92-story skyscraper...

A zen rock garden would be much cooler, but the double doors says dog park. Wonder if you'll need a key (i.e. no dirty, misbehaving public dogs allowed.)

They do on occasion. I have only seen it in red so far. I hope they coordinate it more often with Willis and Hancock... All 3 lit up at the same time look so amazing. :)

Riverwalk looks great, I think it's an excellent example of how you want your tall building to integrate in its surroundings. Unfortunately, no one seems to be renting it. If I was Trump I would try to nail one good bar as an anchor tenant, I think it has way more potential as a night life center than a shopping galery.

If all goes as planned, the spire atop Chicago’s Trump International Hotel & Tower will finally light up Wednesday night, joining the city’s other skyline giants in a blaze of cloud-scraping color.

Shortly after sunset at 8:29 p.m., newly-installed, energy-efficient LED lights will illuminate the spire atop the riverfront hotel and condominium tower, which is Chicago’s second-tallest building. They will color the 227-foot-tall spire in red, white and blue, honoring Independence Day. The color scheme will continue through July 11."

Ehhh...disappointing. Only the spire is lit. I was hoping for some lighting on the crown. I've got a panoramic view of all of the other towers from my window and this pales in comparison to the others. Too bad.

On the bright side, the light of the sunset on the skyline was spectacular.

true ^^^^ it was pretty disappointing but it was cool to see it change colors every few seconds... Maybe when they get some more tenants they'll light up the whole crown and spire, now that would be something to see :)
