Well if the cultural quarter of Shush kicks off soon, we will see areas of the city looking somewhat like that again. I often walk round Joumhouri streets or down to Felestin and the roads round there are wonderful, many of the old buildings are being renovated and to a further extent, the sidewalks are being upgraded (needed). Slowly but surely it is getting there.

If u get a pic of Baran u will be doing us all a favor.Cause u can hardly found one pic of it.
And 500 700meters under Baran if u walk the shariati southwards seyed khandan u see on the left site,a big contruction site, the jam tower.
So Mirdamad Tower,Baran Tower,Jam Tower are without any proper pic,if u make some pics it would be perfekt/

You just press CTRL + right click on the photo and it gives you the option to have it larger.

Of course they can load the images as long as you don't overload each page with too many photos. I'm saying this because it looks a bit tacky posting so many photos where you cannot see a damn thing and cannot see any details at all.

The problem with lanes like say on the autobahns is that I convinced my friend with his car to stay in the lane something he complained about to me but then commenced with and then the lane nearly went off into the verge. Hence the reason why people generally dont pay attention. Also there is always the problem when you are sitting there nicely in a straight line and then a 206 is reversing into your front because the jack ass missed his junction 1km back.

The city seems rich in culture and history. Yet after glimpses of Tehran through the Iranian film-makers' work such as Panahi's "Offside", Moghadam "Cafe Setareh", Satrapi's "Persepolis", Kiarostami's "Taste of Cherry", Mehrjui's "Leila" et al., the metropolis seems a place of uneasy fear. I've more than 30 Persian made DVDs. The walled in villas, the grey concrete buildings, dusty sidewalks, as pictured in these movies, give the feeling of isolation, and overall sadness in a bleak metropolis.

well...., the city is crying for a return to its history
physically much has been destroyed
and looking at the emotional side, the people are in tension, its uneasy, everyone is waiting for a change , its as if something will happen for sure, but the time is uncertain,
and because of that uncertainty, the city is in a still life position, at the brink of a revolution , thats why it is so loud yet so calm and shivering, giving it a sense of neglect and isolation,
its the silence before the explosion

What a revolution you say about, you want pro western, "orange-green" riot, which ruins Iran, like a Lybia, and brings a western puppets there? It is an absolute illusion and ugly dream. Western system and capitalism will collapse and cease, as a truly satanic and barbaric thing.

Dont be so bloody melodramatic! What do you expect from an Iranian film!? Its just the style of film in Iran. They create an effect to suit the mood of the film (usually melancholy and tense). These will inevitably shape your idea of the city especially if thats all you've seen of the city. Tehran's pavements are not particularly dusty. You could say shit like this about anywhere. The built environment of the city does not reflect what people feel at the moment or what is happening politically at any particular time. Its just your perception of the city related to how you feel about it. Its not the complete realty. Only yours. Someone else's reality and perception of the city may be completely different. Someone who hasnt watched Rafi Pitt's The Hunter:lol:.

It is important to get the perspectives, thoughts, directly from Iran whether they be through Persian film makers or Iranian forum members for a frank hearted understanding of Tehran to outsiders. Your reflections Soroush, are poetic, open, and well expressed.

It would also be fascinating to see photos of Tehran's cemeteries such as the famed Recoleta in Buenos Aires or The City of the Dead 'Medinat al Amuat' of Cairo, to get a further sense of a city's culture. For example, is there a special resting spot for Neda Agha-Soltan since her death this past June? Such pictures would offer a valuable window on the cityscape while providing a clearer grasp of the Iranian capital.

not only that, Iran in general has a shortage of water resources so water is always welcome....

This might explain some of the dusty feel of some Tehran neighborhoods as seen in Iranian cinema.

What a revolution you say about, you want pro western, "orange-green" riot, which ruins Iran, like a Lybia, and brings a western puppets there? It is an absolute illusion and ugly dream. Western system and capitalism will collapse and cease, as a truly satanic and barbaric thing. For the love of Skyscrapercity can you stop being so ultra-nationalistic?

Nobody asked you to comment, we have something called "freedom of expression here" so don't hate on pro-western people.

"Western system and capitalism will collapse and cease" communism and ultra-nationalism at it's worst...

If you don't like the west that's fine, just let other people say what they want about the west.

Sorry Soroush jan, i just had to say it to this guy, looks like he is on a trip as usual lol.

these idiots want to bash everything in iran

"Lets build more stupid bridges in every corner of our cities and make everything made for cars so people buy more cars and drive them more!!!" :bash:
thats not the sole reason, but it shows how they run the country
they purposely place uneducated pricks with no vision in charge of the country (ghalibaf yekam is an exception) to purposely destroy the city and steal all of the nation's money
they will one day burn in their own hands

Pollution can't be tackled overnight, however i agree with you to a point. Some of the men positioned on top are only filling their pockets without making one of the most important issues top priority, an earthquake (god forbid). While they are addressing the pollution gradually they need to implement stronger enforcement for constructing earthquake resistant structures.

SoroushPersepolisi
December 23rd, 2011, 08:23 AM
^^ yea but their not tackling pollution either
the solution to less emissions from transport is not to make buses and metros but at the same time increase car dependancy
they build a metro, lovely, but then continue to make everything for cars
cars cars cars
they should make ppl less car dependant
aside from that, these stupid ugly bridges that suck up so much money arent even a tiny bit helpful for traffic
one/two extra lanes really doesnt do anything

fundamental traffic and transportation laws and methods should be altered
this strong car dependancy and poor neighborhood planning should be eliminated

other issues lile earthquakes should also be heavily influencing the work of the mayorhood, but in reality.... they wanna fill their pockets

tehran needs less popultation, less and better cars, more metro, railway, monorail. also constantly improving fuel quality and removing a lot of motorcycles will help.

nomatter how well versed people are, they are heavily influenced by the way the government works, the people are good but sadly the way things are run have caused the people to adopt the way the government does things, eg driving, speaking, lieing, stealing cheating , abd some otger things i dont want to mention here
iran needs authority, good authority, to drive the people back to what was once an ordered and progressive society

There is still a long way for people of tehran to be less car dependent, meanwhile Iran's car industry is pushing forward with more eco freindly automobiles (cng, hybrid and soon diesel). Combined with cleaner petrol grades, rationing and higher prices this could be a short term solution to the pollution. You can't expect them to halt developing city infrastructure. And while i do agree that the government needs manage this situation better, i think peoples attitude needs to be changed the most, roads exist so you can travel not to go dor bazi.

yes but building useless bridges isnt helping anything but ruin cities and fill pockets

how come u dont see any of these bridges anywhere in world class cities the size of tehran, like paris and london and istanbul etc? they do have these double deckers etc in some parts in the outsides of the cities, such that it doesnt ruin the actuall city, but not like iran where they run it through all the god damn main streets inside the city, its useless, money draining and a horribly ugly extension to the city
the problems need to be tackled from the roots but nothing is really being done

if these bridges were temporary, it would make sense , but the arent, they are there to last long and eventually make tehran look like those ugly dirty distopian like cities we see in some fiction movies

yes sweden is not as populated as iran

so lets say germany instead, 80 million population, look at the format in which they build their cities , and look at ours, yes they are developed, and thats the whole point, city structures are important factors in determining if a nation is developed or not (developed not as in HDI, but im talking a bout a more culturally-systematically developed nation)

its funny because we iranians think we are so big, but then when someone compares us to germany sweden france etc we say "khob una ke pishraftan", well comparing iran to bangladesh isnt really effective (no offence to) bangladesh

I forgot to mention in my previous post, there are many people that making a living from those cars as well.

i'v seen many bridges in tehran which are actually usefull, yes there are some hidious ones but thats just how it is. Bare in mind the amount of motorways in tehran, so bridges are usually required to connect one to another. Don't even compare it to london, the traffic is crazy and there are roadworks everywhere, if they dont build bridges they build stupidly planned junctions. In my opinion, they should continue with their work but start forcing people to drive better, honestly speaking do you not see a connection between how people drive and traffic?

Whatever Iran does people still complain, unfortunetly some people want to be an exact copy of western countries and thats just not going to happen. We are in a completley different position than Germany, so instead of comparing and complaining why not give constructive criticism and share our thoughts on solutions.

We were talking about pollution, I would give it 5 to 10 more years till the situation improves (hopefully).

well u said it yourself

and we can make cars, but lets export them more, rather than shoving it down our own people's throats
the major problem is the way people drive, if driving was proper, a lot of the traffic issues would be solved, building bridges hardly aids anything
if uv been to iran recently, you would see
last year i went, the bridges are usually not much of a help

in comparison london or paris have lots of traffic but its controlled and far more fluent than iran's

i dont want iran to become like western countries, but u cant disregard some facts and points that they have which allows them to live easier (in terms of city building etc). if these bridges were real traffic solvers, then alot of the developed cities would also have had them
im not saying that we should just see if they build them or not, and then copy, the issue is very obvious and common sense is all u need to see that these useless bridges are doing nothing, but the fact that developed nations dont do build them acts as a proof

as i said, the root of iran's traffic needs to be solved, the main problem imo is the driving culture we have developed, and the overly dense and poorly planned neighbor hoods rather than a physical need for automotive passageways (highways bridges streets etc)

Define your vision of best country to me ???

a country that its cities are unorganized ans ugly, a country that many of its people are in hunger, a country that u have to sell u liver for rent money, a country where 20 years after a war, the war zone still is "a war zone", a country where in some villages kids dont have schools and the people dont have houses and water
acountry which women are half a man, where they are just considered as objects (by the gvrnments view)
a country that has the worlds most druggiey, exports people to gulf states, steals its peoples' money, a coubtry of bright people jailed by a backwards cultural disaster, a country where social problems are so deep that it seems they will never be solved
a country where everyone beats everyone up for a personal cause
no progress, no unity, no love
a country that has lost its sole, its culture ans humanity

its easy to make it like that dont u think? ;)

yes but building useless bridges isnt helping anything but ruin cities and fill pockets

how come u dont see any of these bridges anywhere in world class cities the size of tehran, like paris and london and istanbul etc? they do have these double deckers etc in some parts in the outsides of the cities, such that it doesnt ruin the actuall city, but not like iran where they run it through all the god damn main streets inside the city, its useless, money draining and a horribly ugly extension to the city
the problems need to be tackled from the roots but nothing is really being done

if these bridges were temporary, it would make sense , but the arent, they are there to last long and eventually make tehran look like those ugly dirty distopian like cities we see in some fiction movies

yes sweden is not as populated as iran

so lets say germany instead, 80 million population, look at the format in which they build their cities , and look at ours, yes they are developed, and thats the whole point, city structures are important factors in determining if a nation is developed or not (developed not as in HDI, but im talking a bout a more culturally-systematically developed nation)

its funny because we iranians think we are so big, but then when someone compares us to germany sweden france etc we say "khob una ke pishraftan", well comparing iran to bangladesh isnt really effective (no offence to) bangladesh

miduni chi migam ? :)

Soroush, obviously you are very wrong.
The traffic of the late 80s, early 90s was worse. I can assure you.
Its still quite bad in Tehran, but the improvements every year are actually quite astonishing.

Also quite briefly, Iranians driving culture is very North American. People just like to drive, even if its 5 minutes. They like big cars, don't really care about fuel efficiency (even without subsidies), and even less about the environment. Government programs and education can slowly change people's tastes, but its very difficult to implement wide scale traffic reduction policies in a city which has a constantly growing population and land area.

late 80s and 90s had reason, city regeneration after a shut down in war
the system of trafficing was 50 times behind its current state

about the culture, i have noted that several times in this forum (i think :) , i know i allways mention it in real life, how ke ma irania hichimun be hichimun nemikhore, i nag about it all time) , sadly we are very wasteful and careless, some iranians in a family of 4 have 3 cars , an suv is usually a must have for higher mid class, but then our cities are like their european counterparts, small and tight, but interestingly our mentallity hasnt adapted to our OWN city designs
harki vase khodesh, no care , no unity, then the same people complain about traffic the most, people dont give a sh*t, a result of such a nice system we run on

we need to develop a proper transport culture
then we wont need even 1/10th of these bridges

i never expected our traffic issues and culture to be changed over night, its a long process, but sadly we see no fundamental attempts to change, just temporary "drugs" that cover up the problem for a short time

ive been to esfahan, and in stark contrast to all other cities in iran it is very clean, maybe a bit messy, but very clean its nearly impossible to spot a piece of garbage on the ground

the people in esfahan care , for some odd reason, they are careful of the city

Aerithia

Yeah exactly, Tehran is also fairly clean if you compare it to other major cities in the world.

Here in Sweden the cities are really dirty, spots of chewing gum and garbage everywhere...

Also remember that Sweden has only 9 million people, in Tehran which has around 9 million people like Sweden you barely see any garbage on the streets, the streets are pretty dusty and stained but atleast people have some moral and throw their garbage in rubbish bins...

^^ im not so sure about that

tehran is clean in the morning but as soon as the people hit the streets........ the water ways get clogged up by garbage
in comparisson to cities its size and situation (developing cities), tehran is a lot cleaner though

im not really sure about stockholm, because from what i know sweden as a whole is a very clean country

germany for example was very clean, if someone (especially a native german) saw another person throwing garbage, he woul freak out and would tell them to pick it up, thats how much they care, but u know the germans, una yechiz digan lol

tehran's mayorhood though has really helped the city in terms of garbage, slowly u can see the people changing

Also Sweden is very clean, i might be judging the chewing gum and garbage stuff from old times, this summer they enforced a law which makes it prohibited to throw garbage at the ground.

They should do the same with Tehran.

its a less residential area, maybe thats why

anyway, the northern areas which used to be separate towns and suburbs (now part of the city) , like tajrish and niavaran etc used to be all villas with huge gardens, the layout is made for single homes not appartments, sadly, the municipality has let them to be exploited , its a very unique area but it ha seen much desctruction

Yes I understand that but as I understand living in this old house down town, I understood this to be a suburb area, say that I can see Bank Saderat/Tejarat (can't remember the name) tower from my house so I guess I am in the commercial hub. Bonus is I can walk down to Ferdowsi sq on a daily basis and stare and cry in the sarafi windows at the exchange rate!!!

Wonderful.

The only thing which always makes you go like "meh" is the shitty low-rises which is scattered all around Tehran, seriously they look terrible and they take up so much good space which could have been used as a green space or used to build a decent highrise on it, from what i've seen they barely build these anymore but still, they need to demolish this crap, it not only benefits the people but Tehran as whole.

but really the whol city is beating haha

Big Abdul
January 28th, 2012, 06:59 PM
Yeah I mean area. Well I just think as I am new the once physical centre of of everything was the bazaar but as I head up town I see that the actual "moneyed" people are towards the top, would you say bazaaris headed uptown?

Aerithia
January 28th, 2012, 11:33 PM
Oh, areas? Sorry lol.

Nowadays the uptown parts are getting large investments, which means that unfortunately old villas, lower buildings (the lower building one is actually good lol) might get destroyed, so i doubt that the bazaaris are heading up there, however i guess some of them move to the western or eastern parts of Tehran, from what i've heard the city is expanding towards the west.

Talking about areas in Tehran i'm glad that they've stopped building towards the south, seriously a large majority of the people there are drug dealers, unemployed, criminals etc, just a few examples are Eslam Shahr, which is the most terrible area in Tehran ever.

SoroushPersepolisi
January 29th, 2012, 01:36 AM
^^ its very unreasonable and "mean" to make such comment, just because they are poor means they shouldnt develop the south?? infact, if the south had developed there wouldnt be such issue

it comes back to the idea of poor management, the north shouldnt of developed like this, it should of remained like a suburb with its gardens and houses

instead, the south should of expanded as there is endless space and its much more easy to work with (in terms of terrain)

Soroush is right actually, there was a documentary in PressTV a few months ago about air pollution in Tehran, they said about 4000 new cars hit the road each day so yeah, in long sight it won't get much better.

It MIGHT get better, and this is if the municipalities start to encouraging public transport, developing metro lines etc, they are already doing that but they need to invest more, first then people will scrap the thoughts of buying a car and take the metro or BRT bus lines instead, this will be a huge step forward towards solving the traffic problems in Tehran.

@Shayan, Istanbul has it old and backward areas too, believe me, what was Istanbul when Tehran was booming in both economic, construction and culture during the Shah, Istanbul just developed itself in the last 10 years... ;)

old is backwards?? so lets all move to dubai then
the most beautiful areas of cities are their old quarters, sadly iranian cities have none,
lalezar street in tehran was at one point like istiklal caddesi today in istanbul 80 years ago, but look at tehran now and look at istanbul
forget how we were "booming" 50 years ago, look at the reality today

some street pics of residential alleys, i love these streets, the houses , especially the older ones from the 80s and 70s, the trees, these streets are very "tehran" styled and unique to iran , ive never seen any similar street layout, with one side having from gardens , the other side the front side of the building, it creates a very special balance
i believe they need some organizing but they are still lovely

firooz bahram highschool/college
a zoroastrian school established in the 1930s, architect is jafar khan memarbashi
very nice traditional architecture, this is in a sense neoclassical persian architecture, which arose in the 1800s up to the 30s and 40s later to all be destroyed :bash:

old is backwards?? so lets all move to dubai then
the most beautiful areas of cities are their old quarters, sadly iranian cities have none,
lalezar street in tehran was at one point like istiklal caddesi today in istanbul 80 years ago, but look at tehran now and look at istanbul
forget how we were "booming" 50 years ago, look at the reality today

some street pics of residential alleys, i love these streets, the houses , especially the older ones from the 80s and 70s, the trees, these streets are very "tehran" styled and unique to iran , ive never seen any similar street layout, with one side having from gardens , the other side the front side of the building, it creates a very special balance
i believe they need some organizing but they are still lovely

Yes but you all describe Tehran as an old and ugly city so but it isn't Tehran is faaaaar more charming than Paris or .... for me, because it has sooo much more....
mountains
parks
musea
shoppings
old areas
palaces
....
those dutch tourists should go and clean their own cities first like Amsterdam which is full of dirt and trash on the streets and than complaining about our cities...

tehran by no means has more old areas and palaces than paris

tehran is tehran, paris is paris, how about this, instead of comparing, lets try to develop tehran the way it should, with its old and new

if paris is so crap it wouldnt be one of the world capitals, both are great cities

i swear this is the iranian problem, we cant accept criticism, so to hide our weakness we start comparing to other people's stuff
