Central element of the rehabilitation of a downtown area together with the First Interstate World Center, it responds in terms of urban planning and composition as a ball and socket joint between public spaces, historical buildings and modern skyscrapers. It incorporates the volumes and materials that surround it while still representing a corporate image. Its design responds to the neighbouring buildings.
Starting out from a base which takes its height from the Baltimore Hotel next door, a central trunk of blueish granite rises and the sides are wrapped in a metallic cladding. A volume of elliptical blue glass which penetrates the granite of the trunk symbolizes a gas flame. As it rises, the trunk shrinks until only the blue glass and the infinite sky are left.

8/10 - I like the nice, shiney facade that dances with the light, and the contrast between the square tower and the curved top. The indentations and contrast between the sections of the tower's facade also help.

It could be a bit slimmer, though...

BTW - Anyone else notice this building in the movie Daredevil? (Kingpin's tower) Funny how they put it in Manhattan!

was it me or did they superimpose this tower in New York for the movie "daredevil". . if not that tower looks just like this one. . . .i was sitting through the entire movie thinking about that ..

what's not there to like?...it's a beauty and everything works..the setbacks, the curved top, the blueish-green glass....8.5/10.

Sorry, but this "slide into slot" approach to the top doesn't work for me at all. In my eyes an experiment that flops; I find the result extremely awkward. I also find the windows singularly unappealing. Maybe I'm just no fan of SOM. ;)
