View Full Version : #223 l MLC Centre l SYDNEY l 228m l 60fl
RafflesCity January 27th, 2003, 11:50 PM MLC Centre
Sydney, Australia
HEIGHT: 228m/748 feet
FLOORS: 60 floors
COMPLETION: 1977
ARCHITECT: Harry Seidler & Associates
This white polygonal tower was constructed on a site raised above the adjacent streets. The plan forms a square with trimmed corners; the short edges run parallel to the streets bordering the building. In this way, the building respects the course of the underground railway tunnels. Access to the MLC Centre is via 2 squares leading up to the tower from street level.
The Centre is part of a complex which includes restaurants, shops, cinemas, open plazas and the Royal Theatre, and features works by contemporary artists such as Josef Albers and Alexander Calder. The radial floor arrangement further emphasizes the position of the building. The windows are recessed, so that the horizontal structural elements provide protection from the sun.

DaninTO January 28th, 2003, 05:19 AM 6.0/10. Equal to many other buildings like it built in the 70's era style. Although it does make an effort to be different.

The facade is a bit dull, but I like its shape and it looks really tall in the Sydney skyline. Considering when it was built it is great!

No!! Anything but that Harry Siedler white!!! Every other building he's designed is mainly white (minus Cove which is peach/pink) :D

Great shape.
Jase Calvin April 28th, 2003, 09:08 PM This one relies on repetition and uniformity to achieve impact. It's looking quite dated though. Bonus points for being octagonal. 6.5/10.
TropicalSQ744 May 10th, 2003, 05:37 PM Shape is good but the facade is plain boring! Glass would probably look great!
7/10
Fabian May 25th, 2003, 05:50 AM Not a bad 1970's design but it was better than the original proposal for the site which was just as bad even though it was taller.
But for photographers like myself, it's one of those towers you must photograph.
6.5/10

Liz L October 16th, 2003, 10:04 PM 3.5/10 - A box with a few more edges - it has some height, but that's it.
The recessed windows are a good idea for dealing with the sun, but they kill the facade - which is simply dull and overvearing, nothing more than stone or concrete pierced by a series of vertical slashes, almost like so many stab wounds. It's just an uninspired, brutal design all around, with all the pizzazz of a parking garage, and one of the uglier scrapers I've seen on the forum here...
airsickpenthousedweller October 23rd, 2003, 07:37 PM I wouldn't consider this Brutalism, in fact it looks like a giant refrigerating or heating element and has no more than this stupid association as its expression.
4.5/10

Muse March 6th, 2004, 02:21 PM Originally posted by huaiwei It looks much to concrete to my liking...5/10. It's edifice is actually made of a quartz aggregate.
One interesting thing is that the pillars gracing the sides are actually not vertical and decrease on an angle ever so slightly towards the very top of the scraper.

9 due to it being rather a unique building for a 1907s tower and for providing a great complex.
