Other projects in the pipeline for the medical district include the LSU/Tulane Cancer Research Center, a human development center and a public health laboratory.

A forensic center, a 200-room hotel and medical conference center on Canal Street, and an expansion of Tulane's hospital are also expected to be part of the medical district's development.

In addition, there are plans to build a new Charity Hospital, one of the oldest continuously operating hospitals in the nation. Two locations are being considered for the $600 million hospital, LSU's Rock said. One potential site is the block bounded by Cleveland Avenue and Canal, South Prieur and South Roman streets. The other potential site occupies most of the block bounded by Gravier, Perdido, South Johnson and South Galvez streets. There would be room for an expansion of that site across South Galvez street.

Meanwhile, Tulane will move many of the classrooms and offices affiliated with its School of Medicine to newly leased space in the 1555 Poydras St. office building. The move frees up space in the Hutchinson Memorial Building School of Medicine at Gravier and LaSalle streets for a $6 million transformation into laboratories and research space.

Oh great....more government waste on a government-subsidized hospital that is synonymous with corruption.
