The previous afore mentioned thread was one of my favourite's on here and certainly had some of the best pictures and discussions (and geese  ) concerning Birmingham. Here are a few of my old pics to kickstart it again

Actually I can't agree. I love the canals we've got, the city centre ones which have been regenerated, and the quiet ones which haven't. In this weather, they're a real draw for locals and visitors, they're fantastic, but I can't see many developers, or the council, building any new canals, nor is it desirable.
We should celebrate the canal network for what they are, remenents of industrial transport that have a new lease of life as lesuire areas and pleasant locations for bars and apartments. It would be very expensive to extend the canal network into new areas, whereas having good quality public open spaces, new green squares, water features and trees can create an equally good environment at a fraction of the cost.

And there's still a lot of miles of canal in the city and suburbs which have the potential for great redevelopment.

Okay, here are a few photos from today. I met up with Cargohold and I'm sure he'll be posting his photos later on too. Instead of the usual stuff around Broad Street, Gas Street and Brindley Place we had a look at Birmingham's industrial canals around Bordesley. A lot of folk will probably look at these photos and think or even say "what a shithole" a very puerile reaction if it occurs. There's so much history just in this small set of photos that you can't help feeling proud of Birmingham's past. Birmingham has a huge canal network and the regeneration around Broad Street is well documented and of course something to be proud of but I really did enjoy taking these photos rather than any I've taken on my previous shoots.

Not sure if I do but I DID take a few of the Brindleyplace canal area back in November 2003 (fucking can't believe I was last in Brum almost THREE years ago).....but they were with my FILM camera as I didn't have a digicam then. I think I uploaded a few of them on this site - the pics included some night shots of the Selfridges and Bullring area, plus the Rotunda, Fazeley canal, and, as you may well remember, some pics of the Centenary Square and the Birmingham Wheel. I think all these pics may now be lost as they weren't uploaded on any Photofucket sites but rather courtesy of Lizzy Kinoke's site.

In the absence of Mr Rigadon I can oblige... :)

In this one you can see the Waterside apartments on the left (small, fairly plain but decent build quality). The Fiddle & Bone pub near the bridge with Symphony Court beyond, and Brindley Place and the Hyatt peeping over the top. then to the right is King Edwards Wharf Phase 1, and the near right King Edwards Wharf Phase 2 (and you can just make out the white bridge connecting the 2 phases).

For a Brucie bonus, do you recognise this bridge elsewhere?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/Robdann/Birmingham%206/PICT004516072006.jpg

In this picture you can see King Edwards Wharf Phase 1 on the left, and following the canal down you can just make out the edge of Liberty Place. Then back across to this side of the canal, Watermarque is just the other side of the white bridge, with King Edwards Wharf Phase 2 on the near right:

On the first pic, the buildings on the horizon (the clock tower etc) are a mixture of offices and bars, restaurants and a few shops, hotels, gym, art gallery (2) and a couple of squares. Beyond those is Broad St which is the main entertainment district.

The foreground areas are virtually all apartments, with a cafe and a couple of shops thrown in for good measure :)

How much city centre canal side land is there left? still plenty of potential I hope! That apartment scheme above (King Eds) looks excellent and really fits in well in design and material terms. I actually really like all the red brick (normally I detest it) as it seems to create quite a warm, cosy, traditional and relaxed atmosphere.

Biosonic
July 18th, 2006, 01:31 PM
I worked around that area for a few years (involved in the regeneration) and it was really heartening to see the transformation.

There's loads of apartments around there now, and they all have similar sizes etc so visually it all works really well :)

Prestonian - I would say about 1/3 of Brums canals have been regenerated. The Jewellery and Gun Quarters, Digbeth and the rest of Eastside are yet to be done. It is mainly the western flank of the city that has had its canals developed so far :)

Martin G
July 18th, 2006, 01:36 PM
It does look very pleasing to the eye - all the new buildings creating this "canyon" effect. And it's actually a departure from previous Brum city centre canal scapes - which were mostly reliant on making the most of the existing low-density and traditional 19th century buildings (as best seen on Gas Street), such that it was usually always instantly recognisable as belonging to the city.

Amazing to realise how derelict most of this area was even as recently as 5 years ago.

Manchester of course has its equivalent in the form of Piccadilly Village (which predates this area by a good few years) and obviously the continued developments along the Ashton-bound stretch of the Rochdale canal at Ancoats will make use of all of the huge warehouse structures that border the line of the canal route.

This building houses some of the priciest apartments in the city (duplexes, vaulted ceilings, original fittings, iron spiral staircases etc) and is rather lovely.

Just to the left of it you can see the Watermarque apartment block.

I am not sure whether this particular bit of wasteland is built on yet, but Sherborne Wharf is neighboured by the Jupiter apartments and the Dakota building, and is only a couple of minutes walk from Brindley Place. :)

Oh....!! i never thought Birmingham had so many canals, lots of em look like shit, but another part looks very good!and we all know tourist get horny seeing canals :x

Is this the only city wich has an extensive canal system and for what reason does Birmingham have one?

Erebus555

Because it was an industrial powerhouse during the 1800s. It was one of the most important cities for industry and manufacturing in the world. The canals carried all the goods through the boats and when the industry slowed then the canals fell into disrepair and were covered in shite and now we are renovating the buildings and using it as a tourist attraction.

I think most major cities have pretty good canal networks, but the West Midlands is at the hub of England's network (as it is with trains, and to a lesser extent motorways).

As the Industrial Revolution started in Shropshire, the best way to transport heavy goods was by water. Unfortunately the rivers weren't entirely navigable, and some places (like Birmingham) didn't have a proper river at all. So they built the canals!

The Gand Union Canal connects Birmingham and London and was one of the most heavily trafficked I believe.

Anyway, as the railways took over, the canals went into decline and became a depository for shopping trolleys, dead animals, kittens and car wheels. Someone had the bright idea of sprucing them up, and waterside living was born!

A big advantage of the canals in terms of transport is that towpaths make excellent cycle routes - very few hills!

And as a Brummie I am obliged to say (sigh) "Did you know Birmingham has more miles of canal than Venice?"

How's that for a potted history? :)

You've got to love the BT tower. It's still a class building despite its age.
I found out today that the worlds tallest tree was exactly 152m. Don't hold me to that cause it could be a load of tosh.

Great pics again Smiley, some of them could be used on the best streetscape thread.

Threads going off topic here a little but here's where I got it from...

http://members.optusnet.com.au/mruhsam/

The best known and most famous example is the "Ferguson Tree" which was actually a fallen Mountain Ash downed by a recent bush fire. This was measured by a government surveyor, William Ferguson by tape measure on the 21st February 1872. The length was a staggering 133 metres (436 feet) with its crown (the tree's top) broken off!! The stump's diameter five feet off the ground was 5.5m (18 feet) and at its broken top its diameter was still 1 metre. It is estimated that had this tree actually still been intact it would have approached 152m (500 feet) in height. The surveyor also noted numerous fallen trees in the same area over 106m (350feet) in height.

I just think it's an interesting coincidence that the worlds tallest tree was the same height as Brums tallest tower. A little ridiculous if you think about it.

You can't class it as a canal...

for the simple reason that if you fell in you'd suffer absolutely no ill effects!

I'd agree its not a canal thus the "river" tag, but I was wondering if there is a rail/motorway/river link anywhere else as well as a Rail/motorway/canal link!

Also has anyone that passes the river Rea, noticed it has been near breaking it banks for weeks!

Mmmm. Not sure if I have grasped exactly what you mean but there is a rather fine example of rail, road and canal next door to each other in Smethwick. There's the Toll House Way, Rolfe St Station and both upper and lower level Birmingham to Wednesbury canals in a line. I don't have a picture though.
