Ottawa Business Journal
SARS, the airborne disease that decimated the tourism industry in Canada, was the most defining issue in the rebirth of Air Canada, ACE Aviation Holding Inc. president and CEO Robert Milton told an Ottawa business audience Friday morning.
Speaking at a breakfast event co-presented by the Ottawa Business Journal and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, Milton provided an overview of the troubled airline's restructuring process.
Ironically, said Mr. Milton, it was the SARS crisis that allowed Air Canada executives to say "let's fix this once and for all."
Mr. Milton said the restructuring was very difficult, but the new Air Canada, and its holding company, will be able to profitably operate in the "new low-fare environment."
With a market cap of $3.7 billion and EBITDA of $1.1 billion in 2004, the new company is debt free with the exception of its aircraft. Mr. Milton told the business audience the new company's stock, hovering around $40 on the TSX, is still undervalued. He justified the comment by stating the company has cash reserves amounting to $20 per share and Aeroplan – it loyalty program – is valued at $20 per share. "Air Canada is worth something."
Mr. Milton said ACE's plan to purchase more large regional jets will help medium-sized cities such as Ottawa. The new regional jets, he explained, can efficiently move a smaller number of travellers and still fly longer direct routes.

CRJ's are great as long as you are shorter than six feet and weigh less than 200 pounds, otherwise they are very uncomfortable. I'll never fly on one again. I'd rather make a connection and fly the whole way on a mainline plane than fly nonstop on a regional jet!

Designation for Service to China Harmony Airways has received designation for the scheduled operation of passenger air service to China. The designation allows Harmony to begin flying on a code share basis with another airline, which the carrier plans to do later this year. Harmony is currently in negotiations to acquire its own long-range aircraft for service to China in 2006.
In awarding Harmony the status as the second Canadian airline with designation to fly to China, The Canadian government named the following cities as allowable destinations: Beijing, Shanghai, Huangzhou, Xian, Chengdu, Kunming, Quingdao, Chongqing, Harbin and Dalian. Harmony has not yet announced which of these destinations it plans to serve.

harmonyone's soft leather seats are 22" wide with a 52" pitch, providing more leg room and comfort than any other Canadian carrier.

Isan January 8th, 2006, 03:27 AM WestJet poised for continued growth in 2006
Airline reports increased passenger miles and doubled capacity in flights to U.S.
CALGARY (CP) - Discount air carrier WestJet Airlines Ltd. says it's well poised for more expansion this year after ending 2005 on a strong note with a 15 per cent increase in passenger traffic in December.
Calgary-based WestJet (TSX:WJA) said yesterday that its revenue passenger miles, or the number of paid-for seats multiplied by the distance they flew, increased to 737.1 million - up from 641 million in December of 2004.
For the full year of 2005, revenue passenger miles were up 26.8 per cent to 7.96 billion from 6.28 billion in the previous year.
WestJet started flying regular scheduled routes to U.S. holiday destinations in 2004, and added its first overseas trips last month with flights to Honolulu and Maui.
Sean Durfy, WestJet's executive vice-president, said the airline has doubled its U.S. capacity in the past year to 10 per cent and would like to expand further into other American markets.
"I think we'll continue to grow our trans-border markets, there's no doubt about it, and continue to develop our Hawaii markets," Durfy said in an interview.
Durfy said WestJet, Canada's second-largest airline behind Montreal-based Air Canada, is well-positioned to continue its aggressive growth plans this year with the addition of 12 more Boeing Next-Generation aircraft.
WestJet is also working hard at developing its business market within Canada, which it says grew 10 per cent last year alone to 28 per cent.
"We'll continue to really offer better services and better schedules to our business travellers across the country," Durfy said.
"The big thing is getting the word of WestJet out in Eastern Canada," he said. "Eastern Canada is by far the largest market and we have to be in that market.
WestJet's available seat miles - a key measure of capacity in the airline industry - grew 9.8 per cent in December to 942.2 million from 857.8 million in the previous year. For the full year, available seat miles grew by 19.1 per cent to 10.67 billion from 8.96 billion in the same 12-month period in 2004.
The company's load factor, or proportion of seats filled, was 78.2 per cent compared to 74.7 per cent in December 2004. During the 12 months of 2005, WestJet's load factor was 74.6 per cent compared with 70 per cent during the same period in 2004.
Air Canada and its regional affiliate Jazz also had improved load factors in December. The mainline's load factor was 77.3 per cent, up from 75.2 per cent in December 2004, while Jazz's load factor rose to 69.7 per cent from 68.2 per cent.
Air Canada flew 3.4 billion revenue passenger miles in December, up 7.4 per cent from a year earlier. For the full year, RPMs were up 6.1 per cent to 44.2 billion at Air Canada.
A new reservations system at WestJet, which has been in the works for more than three years, is also expected to help increase revenues at the airline and eventually lead to strategic partnerships with other carriers. But the past 15 months have not been easy for WestJet, recording its first two quarters of losses - including a net loss of $17.2 million in 2004 - after eight years of profits as a public company, as fierce competition and record fuel costs hammered the airline.
WestJet shares have also had a rough ride, losing almost 45 per cent of their value in a slide that lasted from April to November. In the past two months, the stock has regained some of its lost ground. In afternoon trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange yesterday, WestJet shares closed down one cent to $12.45.
