View Full Version : St. Anne Street Fire Station Development
Dicky Sam's June 21st, 2005, 11:09 AM Not sure if there is already a thread on this....
Work has started on the new Fire Station on St. Anne Street, adjacent to Thurstons / Clare snooker factory / shop. The old pub on the corner of Islington has been demolished and the area has been fenced off.
I think this is to replace the old fire station wich will soon be demolished as part of the Paradise Project.
Scarecrow June 21st, 2005, 11:33 AM Any renderings on this Dicky? :?
Dicky Sam's June 21st, 2005, 11:40 AM Any renderings on this Dicky? :?
I did a search and can't find any. But I remember there was a rendering in the Echo about two years ago.
Scarecrow June 21st, 2005, 11:56 AM Was it linked to an older building, or am I thinking about the fire station in Old Swan?

However....
The building on the right (the old pub) have now been demolished so will not be part of the design, unless of course they are re-built?
scouserdave June 21st, 2005, 12:37 PM Nice spot for redevelopment.
Took a load of pics around this area in 2003, but all I can find at the moment is the pubhttp://skyscrapercity.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Dicky Sam's June 21st, 2005, 12:39 PM Thats the one Dave, The Wellington! But sadly its been knocked down.
Scarecrow June 21st, 2005, 12:49 PM Is that pretty much opposite the Police station?

Not really, but not that far away. It was virtually on the corner of St Anne Street and New Islington. The police station is a bit further along.
Its funny cos i've been driving past it for years thinking to myself "i hope they don't knock that down" as it was one of the last remaining buildings of its type/age in the area.

Another disgrace. Those buildings have been left to rot for years. They were built in the 1790's .

yeah, I noticed a few months ago when driving up Islington. I think I mentioned this before, but I worked for a few months in the Owen Owen's bedding warehouse about a hundred yards away. It was burned down years ago. I think it's still an open space.
Pietari June 21st, 2005, 03:21 PM It`s a great pity that the "Wellington Pub" has finally been demolished - that area had quite a few buildings of interest and note that have simply been allowed to rot or gone to destruction.
I only hope that "New Islington" can have a high profile redevelopment that ensures it becomes an appropriate gateway to the city.....the space is there and from the side of the city I come from it`s an important aspect for entering `downtown` .... for too many years it`s been like crossing scorched earth.
pjmulholland June 21st, 2005, 03:32 PM Load of apartments are/were planned for St Annes about a year ago as well.
Don't know what happened to them, only even knew about it from seeing one of those planning notices glued to a lampost right round that spot.
Dicky Sam's June 21st, 2005, 03:55 PM I'd like to see rows of Georgian style terraces on both sides of New Islington all the way from New Islington up to Shaw Street.
They could be built in the style of Canning Street / Parliament Street area but could be divided into student flats. Its an ideal location for students, right in the middle of the main JMU and L'pool uni campus's.
This would add a bit of density to the area as well as attracting more residents into the city centre.
pjmulholland June 21st, 2005, 04:09 PM Certainly if you look at London Road nearby there has been large amount of development relating to student apartments over the last few years. Its not unreasonable to assume that this could also be the case with Islington.
There's also the potential to extend and enhance the fabric district round there to include more homes and crafts type outlets and create a speciality retailing experience.
Half the reason Everton and Shaw St are in the state their in is because it is cut off from the city centre by the duel carriageway at present.
Development would also mean an appropriate first impression to greet visitors from the coach station.
If this new theatre planned on the old TGWU site has entrances on both sides, that'll also help.
Scarecrow June 21st, 2005, 05:05 PM What theatre is this then? :?
Awayo June 21st, 2005, 05:18 PM Tony Sebo's site mentioned a rumour as reported in the Echo, that the Everyman and Playhouse are considering a purpose-built new theatre on the Fortress Liverpool site for the combined operation.
Scarecrow June 21st, 2005, 05:27 PM As well as, or to replace the Everyman and Playhouse? :?
Awayo June 21st, 2005, 05:39 PM To replace is the implication. The older one's won't be needed most probably.
The big purpose built modern theatres in Leeds and Sheffield have been a success (and more successful that Liverpool's theatres in recent years). They are bigger, have proper corporate facilities and generate more cash.
We would be left with yet another quality (and listed) building empty in the city centre though if the Playhouse closed down.
pjmulholland June 21st, 2005, 05:45 PM I'm trying to think of realistic uses that the Playhouse and Everyman could be put to and it's pretty hard to think of any sadly.
Personally I would hope to go the opposite route and reopen venues that are already empty at the moment like the ABC and Futurist.
Scarecrow June 21st, 2005, 05:56 PM Conference facilities? An alternative home for Quiggins? Mecca Bingo? A casino? Someone will think of something. :)
pjmulholland June 21st, 2005, 05:57 PM Of course in the best of all worlds we could have both :)

Have you ever seen that one in Leeds? God, it looks like a Tescos

Save us from something like that. Please! :runaway:
Awayo June 21st, 2005, 06:05 PM What's your signature line PJ?
Does is express your hunger for those circular shaped chocolate biscuit that came in green foil-like packaging in the 70s, or is it the plea of a fustrated east European debutante at a society ball in between the wars Vienna?
pjmulholland June 21st, 2005, 06:06 PM Just a childhood thing. I remember I used to laugh at the ads - which featured bad actors doing dodgy Russian accents and pleading they "vanted" a viscount when I was a kid and I was reading about them last week. Probably be something different in a few days.
Scarecrow June 21st, 2005, 06:08 PM Cheshire Oaks isn't it? :?
:puke:
Scarecrow June 21st, 2005, 06:09 PM That's frigging annoying!
