Yea, when you go on the cable car it goes underneath the motorway and its really cool seeing underneath. They have done some artwork on the bridge peirs like in Auckland's new spaghetti junction.

With the harbour pics you can see why wellington's said to be a mini-Hong Kong. The new developments in willis street will make it alot denser.

I LOVE the stadium :eek2: Simplicity is the art of beauty.

What is Greater Wellington's population .. approximately 370 000 ? What a feat, I don't think that there is any other city of 370 000 with a skyline like Wellington's. I stand corrected but I doubt it.

mtb_nz
June 27th, 2005, 08:20 AM
Yeah Wellington City is very small, but kind of has a dense feeling about it.... They have been saying for years that Wellington needs to build upwards, as space in the CBD is getting limited.

The greater Wellington population is about the 400,000 mark i think

Wellington was certainly my favourite NZ city when I was over there; the whole setting in the bay, the compactness of the city centre, the density around the ANZ/HSBC offices. Don't get my wrong, Auckland was nice, and has some great buildings, but that sprawl just put me off, also after going to Christchurch/Wellington/Auckland, I felt the lesser two had much more to offer that Auckland in terms of things to see and do. We spend a day at the Karori Sanctuary - it only took 15mins or so to get there by bus, but it felt like it was in the middle of nowhere, no on the edge of a major urban area.

All of the government buildings in Wellington use Base Isolators and these mean that it would take a 10 Richter to knock em over.

Sorry, Palmy, but I dont think this'll happen.

well, there was a time last year when wellington experienced rapid small scale earthquakes as their epic centres were that close enough to wellington to cause any damage, but i heard rumors from various resourse(cant remember where) that its only a matter of time before wellington get a destructive earthquake and they might move the capital to palmeston north.

I can tell you a lot about whats going on in those pictures.

In first one, posted by Marky Mark, theres the complete bridge at the top, this is supposed to be northbound only with 3 full lanes and an auxillary lane to the next exit and room for shoulders. This space is used for 3 north and 2 south and median barrier with no shoulder.

Below the complete bridge there are pillars to complete the lower bridge which is partially built. This carries the terrace offramp and the remaining space on the completed section is used as extra room for the clifton terrace car park.

At the top of stans first picture you can see 2 southband lanes become one and the terrace onramp joins as a lane gain northbound. South of here its 1 south and 2 north lanes with median barrier and shoulder. Further south its the 3 lane terrace tunnel with no median barrier or shoulders once again with 1 south and 2 north.

The kinda of queue you see in those pictures is there all hours of the day, far worse in the morning rush and not quite as bad in the evening but still a considerable amount.

As I posted in the wellington transport discussion thread as part of the regional land transport strategy there is a proposal for tidal flow in the tunnel despite the fact investigation has found it to be dangerous.

I seriously doubt that the second tunnel will ever be built, we will probably end up with a rather unsafe tidal flow system. I wonder why they can throw a billion dollars at transmission gully but half ass anything thats close to the cbd. Like the inner city bypass at street level with traffic lights instead of an underground motorway between the terrace and mt victoria tunnels, the motorway south of the bowen street bridges is pretty half assed or not even there at all.

I really should get to making a wellington motorways site after all the stuff i've been reading.

See my post above, it was supposed to lead to the second terrace tunnel, going south only with the existing tunnel and bridge going north.

edit: I think using pictures might help a bit.

I used this picture from here:

Thanks Moveax.
It was just that it reminded me of the unfinished bits of the Spaghetti Junction in Akld. For years we had to look at concrete columns that should have supported motorways and ramps and which should have been finished at the same time as when the columns were actually built.

Interesting. Is there actually room for a second terrace tunnel still?

Moveax
February 23rd, 2007, 02:35 PM
Yes there is indeed room for a second terrace tunnel, it was all planned/built to have a second tunnel there anyway, thats why the partially built things are there. I've read many reasons for not building the second tunnel and the rest of the bridge. One is this - an MP from Auckland said something like "you don't need two tunnels" so construction stops half way through then he funnels the money to fund more Auckland motorways. If ANYONE should be really really pissed off about getting shafted when it comes to motorway funding it should be Wellington not Auckland.

Auckland has now got it's CMJ completed (which is where the money was going instead of the terrace tunnel (if the info is correct)) but Wellington is still without a proper route through the city (no the current bypass is garbage and does not count)) and no second tunnel. It sucks the way that this part of the motorway has been so neglected.

i think you guys are really lucky to have mountains....it adds a bit of charcter i guess....and i like how wellington has an established waterfront........not a waterfront like aucklands, where you actually cant see anything except for these tall ugly cranes......which make the skyline look so yuck from places like devonport!! these ports should go sumwhere else

When I lived in Wellington I always felt like the hills were bearing down on me.
I must be claustrophobic!
Everyone to their own I suppose.
I prefer the "reach out and touch" feeling of the harbours in Auckland with the Waitakeres in the distance...:)

Some Wellington pictures taken in April 2004 - a helicopter was involved!!
If they put some of the 100m+ buildings on top of the hills you would really have some height :)

Easily the best and most urban city in the country. Auckland seems very suburban and 'shopping mall' focused whereas Wellington seems more high st focused. The location is the best in the country compared to the other 2 centres of NZ, its so pretty and green. I was speaking to a kiwi last week and he was saying although Auckland has more people, its spread over a larger area, whereas Wellington city is dense and more urban. These shots proove it. Can't wait to come to Wellington in September!

There is truth and falsity in you claims. Auckland is a city of variation. Sure it has the car-focussed shopping mall parts, but it has some other parts (*cough CBD *cough) which are just as good if not better as anything in Welly's inner city. Auckland is spread out yea, but part of that is the geography of the place, being sited on an 'isthmus'. Auckland feels more like a big city, while sometimes Welly just feels like a big village. I still love welly tho so dont get me wrong bout the place

Further to Flyin's comments. I too love Wellington, and in fact would be my 2nd choice for my place of residence. Mainly because I love living in them hills. The mountain man in me I suppose! The waters edge is a good place to visit, but I sleep soundly at night knowing it would require a extinction level event (ELE) for the tsunami to get me.

Any ways, I digress. I just wanted to add that Auckland suburban strip shopping still out numbers the number of malls, by a long way! Also Auckland has the other 3 CBD's of Henderson, Takapuna and Manukau.

Gr8 pics, thanks - definitely my fave city in NZ (now if only we could put AKL where Welly is and put Welly where AKL is .... puuurrrrfect). Tauranga is my 2nd fave and Auckland just manages to hold onto 3rd position BUT I have a sneaky suspicion that Queenstown will top them all.

Perhaps some kind of meeting could be split into two sections, first one for all then one for over 18's.

We are back from Wellington and we have over 1000 photographs :) I have left my heart in Wellington and I must say that I am very, very sad to be back in Auckland. The city ooozes style ...... the shop/restaurant interiors are AWESOME, the people dress beautifully and now I can see why Wellington is fast becoming one of the World's glamour/hip capitals.

You are all very, very lucky to be living there - stay tuned for the pics.

I can't wait to see them! I'm glad you liked Wellington, I have heard generally favourable reports on Wellington (bar one person who shall remain nameless who hated it).
