View Full Version : Best ballpark skyline view?
micrip June 22nd, 2005, 07:58 AM Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore is the prototype "throwback" ballpark against which all those that came after are judged. The outfield skyline view and downtown setting shattered the myth that the '70's and '80's style suburban, multipurpose stadiums were the way to go.
The question, is the Camden Yards outfield view still the best, or has another taken its place?
Or is one of the old-time stadiums better? Let's hear it!
MattSal June 22nd, 2005, 08:08 AM Do you have any pictures?
Only one I'm familiar with is Atlanta.
djm19 June 22nd, 2005, 08:21 AM dodger stadium has a good skyline view from the parking lot (or the top of the stadium). After all its on a hill that overlooks downtown.

If the stadium would face the other direction it would be even better
TexasBoi June 22nd, 2005, 09:09 AM Houston's orange juice stadium has a pretty good view of the skyline itself.

i_am_hydrogen June 22nd, 2005, 11:06 AM Pittsburgh's PNC Park definitely has the best skyline view:

I know.. Samething with the skyline view from White Sox park. The view is from homeplate down the third base line, I just couldn't find any pics of the D/T skyline from that angle at Wrigley.
P.S.
I'll be at the Sox/Cubs game this Friday
It was freaking hard to get tickets.
Go Sox!
texasboy June 22nd, 2005, 06:16 PM Houston's orange juice stadium has a pretty good view of the skyline itself.
I was going to say the same thing. Not to boost, but Minute Maid Park honeslty has the ideal view of a skyline from a ballpark. Everytime I think of MM Park, I think of the view.

Steely Dan June 22nd, 2005, 06:42 PM pittsburgh and detroit really stand out in this department. lots of ballparks have good skyline views from a certain side of the field, or if you look out the back from the upper deck or whatever, but PNC and comerica are specifically sited to give maximum breath-taking skyline views to most of the ballpark. they are perfectly oriented to their respective skylines. PNC gets an ever so slight edge because of the river and those wonderful yellow suspension bridges in the skyline foreground.

Camden Yards and Wrigley Field don't really have that great of views. Houston's is nice, but is it only from a certain angle?

ap_gyde June 22nd, 2005, 08:38 PM The proposed Twins stadium, which looks likely to pass this year according to some reports will boast a very nice view of downtown. Not only will the view be nice, but it will be right in downtown.

dave8721 June 22nd, 2005, 09:11 PM Miami sulks in jealousy wishing we could get a new stadium :( Instead the Marlins play in a suburban football stadium.
ASupertall4SD June 22nd, 2005, 09:24 PM The problem with San Diego Petco Park it is FAR from having a completed view. I would say right now, the pittsburgh view is awesome. It is easily the best view in all of baseball. I would say, given the unique makeup of baseball stadiums, it is the best view from a seat, in all of the world.
But back to San Diego. Petco Park is due to have an entire region built right around it. Not a new building here or there. But, an entire downtown. I know that in doing research, the area directly in view from homeplate will have 6 or 7 skyscrapers within a block or two of the outfield wall, and dozens more within sight. If you include a new city library with glowing globe at night and 5 skyscrapers visible from 3rd base seats and the entire bulk of the downtown bayside from first base. the future skyline of Petco Park will be in a class only matched by Pittsburgh. It will be the only two stadiums in the world with such views.
waj0527 June 22nd, 2005, 09:28 PM So far its Pittsburg and Detroit, but if we're considering just the stadia, then Baltimore's wins....hands down.
Steely Dan June 22nd, 2005, 10:47 PM Camden Yards and Wrigley Field don't really have that great of views.
wrigley actually has great views from the stands, it's just not a view of the downtown chicago skyline. wrigley is oriented to the northeast, and the views of the apartment buildings across waveland and sheffield with their roof top bleachers, and the dense urban fabric of wrigleyville leading up to the lakeview skyline which includes a couple 500+ foot buildings with lake michigan in the background, is actually really good. obviously you only get views of the lake if you sit in the upper deck. wrigley is also located 4.5 miles north of downtown, so it probably has one of the best skyline views of a non-downtown ballpark. check it out:
http://skyscraperpage.com/gallery/data/554/6324wrigley_skyline.jpg
and that skyline gap immediately to the left of the tall building on the right side of the pic is due to be filled by a proposed 30 story building.
i_am_hydrogen June 23rd, 2005, 12:54 AM ^Nice photo. That dark residential building on the far left is around 54 stories high. To have a building that tall about 5 miles north of the center of downtown is pretty impressive.
After seeing these other photos, I revise my earlier statement about PNC Park "definitely" having the best skyline view. Detroit's stadium is about as good.

micrip June 24th, 2005, 08:01 AM Wow...I had no clue when I started this thread that it would get such a response. Pittsburg is definitely the best...skyline and river view is tremendous.
Detroit is the biggest omission from my list..I had no clue the view was so good from that ballpark. But I was hoping the thread would draw out great photos and it has.
Philly's skyline is barely within binocular range..that's why I didn't include that one...I wanted parks where the skyline looms over the field.
If Baltimore had some taller buildings the view might be better from Camden Yards, but for overall ambience it might be tough to beat.
Coors field in Denver wasn't included because it faces the wrong way..what were they thinking?
hudkina June 24th, 2005, 08:08 AM Detroit is the biggest omission from my list..I had no clue the view was so good from that ballpark. But I was hoping the thread would draw out great photos and it has.
Don't worry. We're pretty much used to getting no respect...;)

wheelingman June 24th, 2005, 06:24 PM PNC Park in Pittsburgh definately has the best skyline view in America.
jaysonjaz June 24th, 2005, 07:19 PM where is citizens bank park in philadelphia on this list?
I think the answer to that is quite obvious. John Street tried to force a square peg into a round hole when he tried putting the stadium into China town. Then when the people rightfully protested, he just gave up and put it right where the old one was. He could have tried someplace like Penns landing or one of the warehouse areas off of Columbus Blvd, but nope. We get stuck with an AWESOME park in a boring location.
The view there is terrible. If you sit on the right field side of things and its not a hazy day, then you can see the downtown in the distance. If you sit on the left field side of things, then you have a great view of I-95, warehouses, and NJ (ugh!)
In my opinon for this poll, I agree that Pittsburgh wins with Detroit a close 2nd. I think Camden Yards is one of the best ballparks in the country, but Baltimore's skyline doesn't even compare to either of those two cities.
JB_Gold Coast June 25th, 2005, 12:08 AM ^Nice photo. That dark residential building on the far left is around 54 stories high. To have a building that tall about 5 miles north of the center of downtown is pretty impressive.
After seeing these other photos, I revise my earlier statement about PNC Park "definitely" having the best skyline view. Detroit's stadium is about as good.
Park Place Tower. I used to live there. It is actually 56 stories, with the top floor being for mechanical purposes...so 55 stories of residences.
Whenver I get tickets at Wrigley, I always get Upper Deck Box seats along third base specifically so I can stare at the Lakeview Skyline. If you are sitting in UDB seats in right field, you'll get a good look along the lake at the Edgewater skyline as well. You can see downtown from certain areas of the bleachers and on the councourses.
I would have to say that the Lakeview skyline view from Wrigley is extremely impressive when you consider the fact that it is 4 miles from downtown. When you are at Wrigley Field, you are looking at the skyline of a residential neighborhood, which can hold its own with the CBD skyline of some other reasonably sized cities.

Well you know the Braves might accidentally break a window or two with all those homeruns.
PanaManiac July 20th, 2005, 03:48 AM The only outfield/skyline view you're going to get at SBC (formerly Pacific Bell) Park is the Oakland skyline across the bay, at best on a clear day. PNC Park clearly has the best skyline backdrop for watching a ballgame. On the other hand, San Francisco's is the best-looking skyline behind the stands of any given ballpark in America! I wish I had that classic photo of SBC park as taken from high above McCovey cove with the downtown skyline in the background.

Turner Field is actually not that far from downtown. Nowhere near as far as Citizens Bank Park is from DT Philly. Probably only 1/4 to 1/2 of a mile. From the upper deck the view is really nice. Here's a more recent image without the old stadium blocking the view:

skate342 September 19th, 2005, 12:17 AM you can't see it from the seats, but from the upper deck patio you get a great view of denver at coors field.

Expat September 19th, 2005, 01:08 AM Pittsburgh has a knockout view - number one IMO. Some of the other ones have great views, too.
ROCguy September 19th, 2005, 03:46 AM I'm going to have to vote Pittsburgh, with Chicago at a close second if that picture really is taken from the park.
weill September 20th, 2005, 03:51 AM nice pictures altogether!!
ltsmotorsport September 22nd, 2005, 09:38 AM The view from Sacramento's Raley Field is pretty nice.

But as far as major league parks go, I'd have to say Pittsburgh.
Y-CityGuy September 23rd, 2005, 08:54 PM Let's see some pic's of the Jake!
United-States-of-America September 25th, 2005, 03:42 AM PNC.
Dancer September 26th, 2005, 03:00 AM To say which one is the best is too hard. I know that Safeco field is amazing and most people I know that have been in a good number of them think its one of the best if not the best. Ill just say I like it but I have only been in Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards, and Safeco Field.
Sa Town Tx Gringo September 26th, 2005, 06:38 AM PNC, Gotten to go to a few games there, and often find myself just looking at the skyline rather then the game.
JohnStreet September 29th, 2005, 07:13 PM The answer is Comerica in Detroit and PNC in Pittsburgh.
ReddAlert September 29th, 2005, 10:31 PM this is the best your gonna get from Miller Park in Milwaukee

lol. Worst of the best sounds good to me. JK...I like the Padres.
go mid east September 30th, 2005, 09:52 PM i'm scared of watching the pads vs. cardinals in the playoffs.... painful...
hey they might leave the season with a winning record at least. they just need 2 wins vs. LA
Jaybird October 1st, 2005, 05:29 PM Other. I'd say Comerica Park in Detroit. Here are some pics I took from a couple of games I went to this year... it makes Detroit look VERY DENSE.

BTW, when I saw those pics of PNC in Pittsburgh, I almost thought it was Detroit for a second there!
DarkFenX October 1st, 2005, 06:31 PM Here's some of Fenway though I still stay with PNC.

StevenW October 2nd, 2005, 12:14 AM Camden Yards is my Fav. but PNC is the best view right now, IMHO.
sernov October 16th, 2005, 05:22 AM PNC Park for sure.
Pac Bell would have won, but it's not facing it. Of course, they built it that way so they could have homers fall into the bay instead.
BuffCity October 16th, 2005, 08:37 AM I like Camden
edsg25 October 16th, 2005, 02:49 PM Not assessing the view, but how it is accessed, i don't think any ball park does as well as Comerica Park in openning up vistas.
It not only has a relatively open (undecked) outfield, the slope of the main decks appears to be the most gentle in MLB. No park opens the outfield up the way this one does.
I think Comerica also distinguishes itself by the grade of its deck slopes. No park is as low rise as this one is.
weill October 16th, 2005, 07:48 PM For a none skyline, but montain view, i like salem avalanches (Salem, Va)
sd_urban October 16th, 2005, 08:00 PM Future view of Petco Park in San Diego

It's a rendering of a project that will break ground soon, and I thought it showed a great view of downtown from the ballpark. Someone had posted it over at SSP.
ChiLooper October 20th, 2005, 12:15 AM PNC
SDfan October 22nd, 2005, 06:27 AM Heres a project just approved by the city of San Diego to be built right next to the ball park:

ASupertall4SD November 2nd, 2005, 07:17 AM SD_Urban went and took a little trip to the SD planning center downtown. here is what is being built as we speak within the view of the bowl at PETCO PARK. Pretty much all of them will be done by 2008-2009. There are I believe 4 others not in these pics that reach the height limit of the city. Not including, additionally the Ballpark Village seen in the renderings if you scroll up the page a bit. Enjoy!

Lmichigan November 5th, 2005, 08:24 AM Wow, talk about an assault on the senses. And I thought Comerica Park has a ridiculously oversized scoreboard. lol
