Built during the Byzantine period (408-450) to defend Porta Aurea (Golden Gate, the largest among 55 gates of Constantinople and the city's ceremonial entrance used by the emperors) Yedikule Castle was enlarged in 1458 by the Ottoman emperor Mehmed II "The Conqueror". The castle is famous for its dungeons.
