Not anymore it isn't. They started work on that early 2003, and it's now done and holds 80,000. The retractable roof will simply sit on top of this.

The outsides will be beutified also.

How is the roof going to work? Hinged strips of glass?

ManchesterISwonderful
June 26th, 2005, 05:07 PM
Those arches don't like big/strong enough to support a fully retractable roof.

empersouf
June 26th, 2005, 05:08 PM
Maybe the rope or steel cables pull the glass up. I don't know.

ManchesterISwonderful
June 26th, 2005, 05:13 PM
Where will the glass go on that render?

I bet that was just a quick mock up. The real thing will look a lot different.

It will probably work like a Roman blind.

WeasteDevil

Maybe the rope or steel cables pull the glass up. I don't know.

As far as I can make out, and I'm only guessing here, the two arches hold up the far smaller arch in the middle that runs the length of the pitch. That along with the two arches then further holds up the struts that run the width of the pitch, which in turn the glass will run over.

When is work on the roof scheduled to start?

Actually is the roof project confirmed - has it got planning permission/put forward for planning permission and has the necessary financing for the project been secured. Or is the project just at a vision stage?!!

I agree it's not the best. But it's probably in the top ten.And what i love about it is the prestigious location it's in.Plus the fact that the greatest football club in the world resides in it.

This project was presented by the Real Madrid presindent in the last elections for the presindency one year ago (the Real Madrid is a CLUB, not a society, so there are no shares to be bought, every person member of the club has one vote). Then he said it again in the annual assembly, so he might present the final project dates soon. :)

Surely it isn't the world's best stadium, but as Peshu said it's on top10 and Real Madrid , the world's best team (cannot argue with that!), plays in it, and it's my team! So for me it's the best stadium in the world:)

Agree with you :) - one of the top ten football stadiums in the world (maybe even in the top 5). Do not agree that its the world best team ;) ...Real Madrid currently not even best team in Spain (let alone Europe or the world).

However, if you meant over its long history possibily one of the greatest footballing clubs (argubaly the greatest!) in Europe based on overall european and domestic trophies and the great players that have played for the club... then I also agree.

Historically, it's the best team in the World, recognised by FIFA. Real Madrid was named the best team of the 20th Century! So therefore it's still the best team in the world (only 4 years of 21st Century). Unfortunatelly the last 2 seasons ended up without any throphy for Real, but for sure we'll be next season's Spanish and Europe champs!:)

July 5th, 2005, 03:48 AM
DaDvD... Agree historically Real Madrid are one of the greatest club teams (agrubaly the greatest) but not sure how you think Real Madrid are currently the best team in the world considering you yourself stated that "....Unfortunatelly the last 2 seasons ended up without any throphy for Real.."

So for the last 2 seasons Real Madrid were not even the best team in Spain let alone the world ;)

Anyway ..for the moment being you should console yourself in knowing you probably have the best stadium in Spain (Although some might argue that its the Camp Nou!!!!) and maybe next season you can win the Prima Liga and be the best team in Spain. :D

However, back to topic ...the proposed redevlopment looks awesome - hope that it gets built soon. :angel1:

DaDvD

Raswok15,
Real Madrid wasn't the best team in the last two seasons, that's obvious; but no team worldwide is the best and wins everything every year! That's why I said of the Century. And even of the last 10 years: won Spanish league 4 times (95,95,01,03)won Championsleague 3 times (98,00,02), won European Supercup once (02), won Spanish Supercup twice (01 and 03) and won Intercontinental Cup twice (98 and 02)! And we almost caught Barsa this season! As you said this year we'll surely win sth!
Sorry for this offtopic but I strongly support my team:)
BTW what's your team??

Anyway, in www.realmadrid.com you can find lots of information (in Spanish, English and Japanese(!)) and pics from the works that are been carried out in the Stadium!

raswok15
July 5th, 2005, 07:28 PM
DaDvD... Appreciate you support your team strongly and as it is off topic and little to do with stadia lets now leave the question of whether Real Madrid are the best team in the world alone - if thats ok with you :)

Anyway, noticed on the spanish version of the real madrid website that they are installing some escalators in the Bernabeu ...is this part of the project that includes the retractable roof (I thought this project had not started or has is it ?!!) or is it a seperate project - does anyone know? My spanish is basic so I cannot tell as the story does not appear to be in the english version of the website.

It is is a mighty stadium however

Toilets > terrible like div 2 rather than EPL - all over the floor if u know what i mean
Food > Never tried it looked no better than the toilets
Security > Got mixed in with the away fans and almost got a beating from the riot police... nice
Transport access > Very good

The seating area is magnificent. The steepness of the upper tiers is indeed mental. However underneath the stands the stadium is very poor.

If you think the other facilities are anything like we have here, think again. Saying that its no different to the Italy and the san siro .. there the food there was sold off a trestle table on the concourse!

Spain and Italy are way behind in providing fan 'comfort' which to many may be a good thing.. the viewing experience is more raw and edgy than the palatial treatment that you get at say the Emirates. I kinda liked it :) but is does mean that none of the stadiums in either country can be classified as world class.

PS I have to add that the blatant racism i saw in Spain was shocking.... watching 5000 Athletico supporters making monkey chants in the Bernabau really does show the sate of Spain's racism problems.. imagine that at an EPL match!!! I went to a game the next day at Getafe and saw the same thing!!! Their supporters are like we had in the 80's and unfortunately so are their stadiums

You can't have gone to many british stadia in the 80's if you think the Spanish ones are that far behind. Agreed, the concourse areas can be basic, and they are showing their age, but most of our grounds in the 80's were boardering on Victorian. Even old trafford was a shed for the most part, and most of our grounds were very reliant on masses of terracing to have anything like a respectable capacity. As a piece of football stadium architecture, there is nothing to beat the Bernebeu in the UK IMO, this a true footballing amphitheatre. Wembley is a sterile bowl by comparison with too many fragmented sections, and too much legroom for intimacy.

Are they still going ahead with that awesome retractable roof ? Also heard Calderon is inplans to expand by another six thousand seats . If this occurs then i think it will be the most perfect football stadium ion the planet if it isn't already . It is so intimate for a fan . It really is just perfect for football .
Size isn't always everything . I ocassionally go to Melbournes iconic M.C.G which roughly has a capacity of close to 100,000 spectators .I went there just a few weeks ago to see the Australia v Argentina friendly where there were about 70,000 spectators witnessing the game . Despite its size it just doen't have that intimate atmosphere that you find in the Bernabeu . At least not for the world sport . It really does seem that the M.C.G is taylor made for cricket and not so much for football (the world game i mean ) .
And to those couple of dreamers that state that Madrid has one of world footballs best histories . Get over your jelousy will you . Real Madrid is in a league of its own justifyingle recognised as the greatest football club in history . You would have to be real dreamer or plain jelous not to acknowledge this fact .

I think that Real Madrid must absolutely to raise the capacity of the stadium. In fact in the next years the capacity of the Camp Nou of Barcelona will be about 110.000 and the new stadium of the Valencia will be 75.000 seats. Now the Santiago Bernabeu capacity is only 80.350 seats !!!!

I know I am repeting myself, but the only thing they could improve is making the smallest stand the biggest stand. For the rest this is a almost perfect stadium. Defuantly in my top 5.

FROM UEFA WEBSITE
The Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid will host the 2010 UEFA Champions League final, with UEFA awarding the same season's UEFA Cup final to the Arena Hamburg.

Key criteria
The UEFA Executive Committee confirmed the selection of the two stadiums after its meeting in Liechtenstein on Friday but postponed a decision on the venues for the 2011 finals to allow members more time to consider the bids. The home stadiums of Real Madrid CF and Hamburger SV were chosen on the basis of capacity, facilities, accommodation and security among other considerations.

Famous finals
Now boasting a capacity of 71,569, the Santiago Bernabéu has staged three previous European Champion Clubs' Cup finals. Real Madrid won the first of them, beating AC Fiorentina 1-0 in 1957, before AC Milan had a memorable night in the Spanish capital when they defeated AFC Ajax 4-1 in the 1969 edition. More recently, Nottingham Forest FC overcame Hamburg 1-0 in the 1980 final.

International finals
The Santiago Bernabéu has also held the home legs of two UEFA Cup finals and two European/South American Cup games involving Madrid, together with several major international matches – notably the final of the 1964 UEFA European Championship where Spain beat the Soviet Union 2-1, and the 1982 FIFA World Cup final which Italy won 3-1 against West Germany.

Important games
Seating 51,680, the Arena Hamburg opened in 2000 on the site of Hamburg's old Volksparkstadion and was the setting for matches at the 2006 World Cup. The Volksparkstadion also hosted group-stage games at the 1974 World Cup and the semi-final of the 1988 UEFA European Championship, where West Germany lost 2-1 to the Netherlands.

Strangely enough the official Real Madrid homepage has the same number:
The Santiago Bernabéu has capacity to hold 71,569 fans during a Champions League game, which seems to indicate these figures will be much larger in Madrid.

Yes, this is what the stadium looked like after the preparations for the 1982 WC were finished. That was the first major improvement of the stadium in many years. Since then step by step they have developed the stadium to what it is today. For sure one of the best venues for football in the world. And a historical one to add to that!

My understanding is that there is just over 80,000 capacity with an extra nearly four thousand V.I.P seats bringing total capacity to just over 84,000 ?
In afootball article interviewing John Aloisi a former footballer in Spain when asked which is the greatest stadium he has ever played in ? He answered the Santiago Bernabeu . Not only that . He also believes it to be the best stadium in the world .

He also believes it to be the best stadium in the world .

The title for best stadium in the world is always debateable. How do you measure "the best stadium"? You can put so many criteria in a discussion about that fact alone.

But it sure is one of the very best in my personal opinion and surely also one of the most impressive ones. So I like it very much even though the steepness of the third tier might be a little bit too much for me.

Now I am not afraid of hights, please do not get me wrong. With "a bit too much for me" I mean that from the top of the third tier you are watching on the pitch as if it were a stamp. Also San Siro comes to mind here. Tiers which are (a bit) less steep give a better "depth" in viewing a match. A good example for me is the Emirates Stadium which first tier is pretty flat. That puts the third tier a bit further away from the pitch giving the fans imho a better depth-view of the game on the pitch.

@Sercan: as far I can check your figure about the capacity of Estadio Santagio Bernabeu is absolutely correct! :). I also have my big doubts about how UEFA "can loose" so much capacity when they stage the CL-final of 2010 there.

have you seen pics of the mestalle stadium from the 3rd tier :D

EPA001
May 4th, 2008, 09:18 PM
^^ Yes, I have. It is also what I dislike about that stadium, although it is a classic one. It is even more on top of the pitch than Bernabeu although in meters Bernabeu is taller when measured from the pitch.

Fortunately the New Mestalla will be a bit less steep. When finished it will be also on of the very best football stadiums in the world. I hope by that time the team will do better then they have done this year!

So what?
253 or 207 boxes?

according to this plan
http://www.realmadrid.com/cs/Satellite?blobcol=urldata&blobheader=application%2Fpdf&blobheadername1=Content-disposition&blobheadervalue1=attachment%3B+filename%3Dreal_madrid_com_palcos_vip.pdf&blobkey=id&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobwhere=1202828993264&ssbinary=true

I've counted 204 boxes

EDIT:
They have also VIP seats in boxes
http://www.realmadrid.com/cs/Satellite?blobcol=urldata&blobheader=application%2Fpdf&blobheadername1=Content-disposition&blobheadervalue1=attachment%3B+filename%3Dreal_madrid_com_butacas_vip.pdf&blobkey=id&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobwhere=1202828993216&ssbinary=true

So 204 suites / palcos + 37 VIP seats in boxes
= 241 VIP boxes

Can anyone tell me what the facilities in and around the Bernabeu are like, are the facilities provided (concourses, toilets, turnstiles) of a high standards?
To be honest I think the Bernabeu is a bit overrated although its very impressive due to its size and steepness of its stands, I think the stadium is undone by the fact that Real have added boxes wherever they can even in awkward positions.

and can you take some pics form the highest row :)

I would say sightlines were better than expected. You really feel you are close to the pitch, despite having bought one of the cheapest tickets.

Nobody sat in the front seat but I would say you can see all the field besides the area of the corner.

I will try to make some pics, but match is at 2200 so I don't think I can take good ones. Hope we beat you :colgate:

worked with the section plan at sketchup.
Looks like the highest row is at 47-48m.
So it could be that 3 stands are 48m high. While at Camp Nou just a small part of the east stand is at 48m.

Are there any plans for the future of this stadium? Even something tiny like a renovation of the exec areas.
I would love it if they could expand the stadium, Real Madrid should be playing in a bigger stadium then this.

www.sercan.de
April 3rd, 2009, 01:18 AM
Maybe they can add a small 3rd tier at the main stand

berkshire royal
April 3rd, 2009, 01:50 AM
^^
I would only do that if the third tier was big like 7,000 because otherwise it wouldn't fit in with the stadium design. I would just continue the second tier further back but I doubt it can be done because there isn't much space around the stadium to expand. It's a shame because I would love to see them playing in a 90,000 stadium like they should be.

salaverryo

That stadium should be well left alone. Don't you think they've tinkered enough with it?

berkshire royal

^^
True but I want it to be bigger :D
The elite in football should be playing in the biggest stadiums possible and I think Real could and should be playing in a stadium that holds at least 90,000. They could rebuild the second tier of that Main Stand it's horrible to many weird walkways and different sectors.

www.sercan.de
April 3rd, 2009, 02:47 PM
Maybe something like that
Capacity could rise to 86,000-90,000
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/5573/seyrantepe4.jpg
And it would fit to the history of the stadium

1.main stand is smaller
2. main stadium is expaned and its bigger
3. other stands expanded -Y main stand smaller

4. 3rd tier at main stand -> main stand again bigger

Huskies
June 4th, 2009, 04:37 PM

Camp Nou 5-36 :)

There should have been a plan to get rid of that 2nd tier extension into the space of the 3rd tier and extend the 3rd tier around the stands, but the "luxury boxes" at the northeast and southeast corners would be in the way of that extension. And one question: How is a retractable roof going to be put in the stadium if the eastern stand covering is irregular to the rest of the stand coverings?

hubemx
June 5th, 2009, 12:33 AM
They should make a new stadium. If they sell the land of the stadium, they should get enough money to build a new one.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Real increase after all Barca are expanding the Nou Camp and usually rival teams copy them and expand as well at least this is how these things usually tend to work out. The only problem is that it isn't exactly clear how they could expand there really isn't much space around the Bernabeu and the main stand already looks strange as it is.

June 10th, 2009, 07:49 PM
^^ terracing, it is only banned for international football. The Germans (and others) have shown it is possible to convert from terracing to seats in a cost effective way so why not. These stadiums have really cheap seats in them already and the ultras stand anyway so surely it's worth it... Terrace both lower tier ends and it would hold near enough 100,000...

www.sercan.de
June 11th, 2009, 03:25 PM

ultra group is quite small and they have already an own block

^^Sercan you say that like everyone who wants to go to the games does and that you have the inside track on the psyche of all Real Madrid fans. I sit when i got to football, but it doesn't mean if i had the choice i wouldn't stand. I don't think you can make those sort of assumptions.

Terracing would allow them to reach a wider amount of people, and increase the capacity. Were only talking the lower tiers behind the goals. Probably less than 15% of seating capacity. Just over ten years ago those terraced ends were packed with fans...

www.sercan.de
June 11th, 2009, 05:54 PM

Anyway its not allowed in Spain.
3rd tier for the main stand!!!! :D

bigbossman
June 11th, 2009, 06:19 PM
^^ As far as i am aware the only reason the stadiums are all seated is because of FIFA/UEFA, other countries get around it by converting standing to seats.

Cheaper tickets are better, if double the amount of people can stand where someone can sit, where is the harm...

www.sercan.de
June 11th, 2009, 08:07 PM
In Turkey and Spain the stadiums have to be all-seater. otherwise no license.

But you can get more money with a seat :)
Especially at Real. i do not think that 1 seat ticket = 2 standing ticket.
IMO 1 seat ticket is more expensive than 2 standing tickets

bigbossman
June 11th, 2009, 09:43 PM
how do you work that out?? You charge standing tickets however much you want to. If you want to charge the same as a seat you do that. If you want to charge half price you'll do that. The point is also you'll make more on concessions regardless...

remember we had the discussion about the standing to sitting ratio... and it was 2:1 so even if you charged half the price, you'd make the same amount...

have you got any evidence of the licence in spain? as far as i am aware it was a FIFA thing not a spanish FA thing...

lpioe
June 11th, 2009, 10:05 PM
El Molinón in Gijon has a small terrace stand behind a goal.
But they just took the seats out and didn't add more rows inbetween, so it has the same capacity as with seating.

I saw a picture of the exterior of the main stand with a strange structure joined onto the top. Is that planned or already built?

Would be nice to finish off the bowl by redoing the configuration of the main stand, but I guess it stays as it is because of restraints regarding room behind it.

My god those tiers are steep!

An exterior facade is to be applied to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium? That is probably an impossible job to accomplish, especially with those four entrance towers added in the 90s. However, if the job were to include an exterior facade, extension of the 3rd tier all arond the stadium, and a retractabe roof being added, it should be the last renovation this stadium will ever have.

one of my favourite, if not my favourite grounds in the world but isn't 80k a bit small for a club of Real standing in football, surely they could fill a much bigger ground 90-100k?

Typically they don't fill it now, surprisingly enough.

When the third tier was added in the mid 90s it did take the capacity up to around 100,000 but that included a lot of standing room.

Being made all-seater cut capacity, and it would be very expensive to stick another tier of seats in. They do have the room to do it though, should they ever feel the need.

It is a stunning venue though, and I'd love to go back there one day as there was only 40,000 or so the day I went for a champions league group match v Sparta Prague many years ago.

^^ It is not full in some matches because many of the holders of the season tickets do not go to all games; many are from other parts of Spain or even the world and can not go to Madrid for every game. Said this, there´s a huge waiting list to get season tickets, usually takes some years before you are able to get the card.

By the way, it´s by far the most impressive stadium I´ve been...

do you think if they can't or it is too expensive that they may build a new ground maybe a ground built with the spanish FA. and the spanish season ticket thing seems really wierd the clubs must lose alot of money? isn't it cheaper to get a ST than to buy individual tickets for the big games like Barcelona, Atletico Valencia etc

It's a different system I believe. You don't buy a season ticket as such. Instead your membership gives you voting rights as well as first refusal on a seat. You can resell your seat match by match if you want.

Unless things have changed, Spanish clubs also have a strange policy of not putting tickets on general sale until about 3 days prior to the game if I remember correctly. I went to a match in Seville a few years back and buying in advance was impossible.

If they build a new one you can be sure they´ll do it by themselves. They thought about building a new Stadium in their new facilities in Valdebebas (next to Barajas Airport) but there´s a lot of controversy, it is such an historic venue that it would not be easy to convince the fans. The advantage and disadvantage is that Santiago Bernabeu is in the center of Madrid. This area is very expensive and if they would manage to convince the city hall to get permission to sell and construct on it, it would easily pay the new Stadium. But that probably won´t happened in a few decades.

Now it is expected a new reform that it willl cover the stadium totally and will also totally change the exterior, a luxury hotel and some shops will also be built.

And definitely they do not loose money with the tickets, actually they plan to make many more vip boxes because they make incredible lots of money. I don´t remeber the proportion but 2 or three of those boxes make more profit than with 600 normal tickets. Not to this point but with the season tickets happens the same and the people that have them are sure they can go to all the big games.

that's the main problem. Bernabeu is a landmark for Real Madrid Fans and a new stadium would be highly criticized

Don't think what you have said is in any way true, Barcelona have 170,000 members (http://www.sport.es/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=44&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=646177&idseccio_PK=803) so i dunno how that many people can have first refusal on 98,000 seats. There is also a clear distinction from looking at both barca and Real's websites, with members perks including voting rights, discounts (on tickets and merchandise) and the ability to buy tickets in advance (maybe explaining your problem in Seville).

My point was more that a lot of people confuse "member" with season ticket holder, and assume both clubs are sold out to season ticket holders. They aren't, and the membership system actually makes it much harder to buy tickets on general sale.

Season ticket holders can also give their seats back, I believe.

But i notice that the roof doesn't cover the whole seats?! Has someone experienced a match by a rainy wheather?

^^^yeah, you get wet if you are in the lower tier or in the first rows( i don't remember now if it's not covered just the first rows or the whole lower tier).

nothing to worry about since it rains just about 400-450mm per year. if you are unlucky, then an unmbrella or a raincoat is very useful :D:D
