View Full Version : A Melbourne icon is almost ready...
The Olderfleet June 25th, 2005, 02:22 PM For those of you outside Melbourne, one of our most famous icons is the "Nylex Clock". After 30+ years service, it was switched off owing to the expense (read about it here (http://www.adonline.id.au/news/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1108774224&archive=&cnshow=news&start_from=&ucat=&)). Anyway, Nylex decided to foot the bill to restore it, and here is a pic I took of it today, looking superb. The scaffolding was removed last Wednesday. Should be swiched back on any time now...

sakor1 June 25th, 2005, 04:32 PM Yeah, those silo's are ripe for conversion to apartments I think (if they haven't been already :?)

seven8888 June 26th, 2005, 12:26 PM ok the sign might be new, but how much did the government spen on it, it hardly looks any different except give a clean , certainly not worth $300,000
kichigai June 26th, 2005, 12:29 PM As Olderfleet state Nylex paid for the restoration, not the government.
Ipggi June 26th, 2005, 01:03 PM ok the sign might be new, but how much did the government spen on it, it hardly looks any different except give a clean , certainly not worth $300,000
When you restore something its not meant to look different, only meant to return it to it's usable and functioning condition.
Drunkill June 26th, 2005, 01:33 PM Indeed.
And yeah those apartments need to be converted, theres a lot of silos around the richmond abbostsford/collingwood area. Those ones, the ones that apart of the Porche shop and one other silo just off punt road in collingwood could all be converted into 10+ apartments. i'd like the those ones in richmond though, if you had a top floor city veiw, it would be uninterupted... looking accross the park.
maybach June 26th, 2005, 02:42 PM Looks..... shiny. Well should last for another 30 years. I wonder if Nylex would sponsor my avatar? :)
Aussie Steve June 27th, 2005, 12:56 AM Why would anyone want to live in convered silos so lose to the Monash Freeway and Punt Road? I would prefer to knock them down and build an office block, as was proposed last year.
The Olderfleet June 30th, 2005, 02:20 PM Melbourne Landmark Lights up the Skyline Again After Facelift
29 June 2005
The famous Nylex clock on Punt Rd was back in business again from 7.50 am on June 29, when it was lit up once more for the benefit and enjoyment of the Melbourne public.
The heritage-listed sky sign, originally erected in 1961, has been fully restored by another local icon, leading water products company, Nylex Ltd.
The restoration of the sky sign included the installation of new neon tubing, LED globes and lettering, allowing it to last for another 40 years.
Chief Executive of Nylex, Mr Glen Casey said “Every day thousands of Melburnians travelling on the freeway, catching the train in from the suburbs, rowing on the Yarra and walking or riding on the river banks, will once again be able to check the famous sky sign for the day’s time and temperature”.
The historical and cultural value of this Melbourne icon resulted in the Nylex sky sign being added to the State Heritage register in March last year. Nylex’s commitment to excellence and reputation has been mirrored in the new sign, following this significant restoration program.
Mr Casey concluded “Nylex’s commitment to quality is reflected in the restoration of the sky sign and now a new generation of Melburnians will come to rely on and enjoy our famous sky sign”.
The Melbourne icon, which can be seen for miles across Melbourne, was immortalised in Paul Kelly’s song “Leaps and Bounds.

Blue_Copper July 1st, 2005, 05:05 AM is it on yet?
Aussie Steve July 1st, 2005, 05:21 AM Yeh!
invincible July 1st, 2005, 12:37 PM It really stands out when you're coming home on the train at night too.
I wonder what we'll think of the sign and silos in another 40 years.
Barsby July 1st, 2005, 02:21 PM yeh i think its great that it has been restored, was too good of an advertising oppurtunity for Nylex to turn down i think, and after all the publicity it has got i think its $300,000 well spent. Silo's are very ugly tho and need something done, if the gas & fuel building was a blight on the yarra i think this is too, to a lesser degree, surely something can be done with it!
The Olderfleet July 1st, 2005, 02:47 PM The silos are heritage-listed in their own right, so I guess there is not much that can be done to radically "beautify" them or turn them into flats.
mugley July 1st, 2005, 03:35 PM The Melbourne icon, which can be seen for miles across MelbourneUnlike the Sydney icons which can only be seen for feet across Melbourne :)
BraddyBoy July 1st, 2005, 04:59 PM Two letters on the red neon of the east facing neon stopped working tonight :(
The Olderfleet July 23rd, 2005, 10:15 AM Here is the Nylex Clock lit up. I photographed it on a cloudy day (i.e. today) to get the maximum effect... still, it seems those fancy new LED bulbs are only bright if you are looking 'straight on' to the sign....
