This is a good looking cluster with 2 more towers yet to be added along with Malmaison and cruise liner terminal

The brown tower, (think it's Silkhouse court), could do with a reclad though... :bash:

Luckily the river was very calm, so rested camera on rail, and waited for ferry to level out before shooting. Also took about 10 different shots, so one of them had to turn out ok. Still i did have to rotate the pic by 2 degrees to get it level.

I think they just need get some towers behind PD and that to give a strong dense feel..Then it will be a formidable cluster! Can't wait to see Alexandra and West tower start.. be brill if they were both rising at the same/similiar time.. really give people a sense of change on the waterfront.

No....It looks quite good now. The crown could do with tarting up, or even illuminating in some way to add to our "City Of Light" and make the nightime shot even better.
I think the same effect as on the bonnet of the car from "Knightrider" would look good. :)

No! It should be demolished and replaced with a sleek office building which would be 3 times as tall. At the moment its bulky and looks bad on the skyline, like the not-so-good effect that Plantation Place has on the City skyline...

Having dominated the North Liverpool skyline for some 40 years, Bruntwood is now slowly disappearing from the skyline as new buildings appear. The top storey with the picket fence round was originally added for mechanical plant. I think modern plant would not occupy anything like this space and so the area could be rebuilt with a glazed restaurant area with magnificent views over the city.

If I remember correctly, the hive has been there since before the refurb. Still it's educational, and a open air cafe and a beehive aren't exactly the best combo. What you reckon, five deaths a year or so from people choking after a bee had got into their cokes and stung them?
Maybe they'll shift it when the indoor one in the Bug House gets going. I've not been for month or so, did you have a look in the Bug House and see if the new hive was installed, Accy?

Cheers for the pic Dave. Damn, RSA looks pig-ugly in that shot. But I think you can do much worse than these three. Burton (former JM) at least looks shiny and from the ground (what will be facing onto St Pauls Sq.) is quite impressive by its sheer magnitude (there is a rendering in the St Pauls Sq thread.)
The brown tower has a metal and glass facade- and looks better than many of the monstrosities from its era. RSA... well, it has an interesting shape.
Let's face it- these 3 "disgraces" look better than the likes of the Arndale Tower in Manc, and many concrete nasties in Birmingham and others.

But Oscar, the Cunard Building is a boring pastiche of a Venetian Palace, built 200 years after the Venetians gave up on that style. It's about as classy and authentic as a structure in EuroDisney. RSA is a modern building, it is authentic, of its era, designed, and creative. It moves things forward, challenges, and - to some - pleases the eye. The Cunard Building is just bog-standard turn of the century commercial pomp. It fills the space between two interesting buildings, and entirely fails to compete with the RSA in terms of contribution to the central cityscape.

It'll be listed one day, Oscar. Mark my words.
Here's what Pevner says about it, "Its rugged bulk and distinctive sillhouette contribute greatly to the skyline. As the momumentally self-important head office of a local insurance company, it follows worthily in the tradition of the Royal Liver Building."
It's aging well in its way. In another twenty years, it wouldn't surprise me if this building weren't well loved. I doubt that it will ever be demolished.

Dont get me wrong. The arndale tower is no graceful building but I rather look at that than the RSA building. To me it looks like a cancerous growth on the otherwise impressive Liverpool waterfront and with some nice new towers going up it looks more than out of place now IMO. It looks like it should be one of those brutalist council blocks in nottingham. Seems to me though that it polarises opinions as does Arndale tower in Manc.Do you really think this get will listed..mmm

The cunard is the middle one, right?
Yep, the one in the middle. It's style is after that of a renaissance Italian palazzo. The word 'palazzo', although usually translated into English as 'palace' refers to the large houses of the Venetian merchants or other notable families as well as actual palaces in the sense of the English word.
In Venice these large houses would typically have a square and horizontal shape. The below image shows a notable example. If you ignore the impressive mosiacs and concentrate on the building's form you can appreciate the Cunard building's architecture's inspiration in buildings of its type.

This one looks more like it, but there are other later palaces (from 18th century) that also look quite similar to the Cunard Building.
Awayo
July 19th, 2005, 11:49 PM
That one does look more similar to the Cunard, Poli.
Still you get the idea, in terms of the general proportions of the building, and even style detail (look at the shape of the Cunard ground floor windows cf the Barbarigo's in the image I posted).
I guess the architects of the latter Venetian palazzi took the older architecture of the city as their cue.
