vincent June 27th, 2005, 04:38 AM it start with showing US map, then i tried drag it to Asia area and zoom in to HK, then it show nothing
Pangu June 27th, 2005, 05:24 AM There are MANY cities that are featured on Google Map, but only the satellite maps. To see them, just enter the city name instead of an address.
Skybean June 27th, 2005, 06:11 AM You have to click "satellite" on the upper right hand side in order to see the satellite view. Unfortunately there is no map for areas outside of North America yet, but you can see the satellite view. By default, "map view" is selected, you must select "satellite view"
Just pan over to Asia and you will spot HK in the correct position :).
Skyscrapercitizen June 27th, 2005, 04:22 PM amazing, nice to see, I visited all big projects and Tseun Kwan O on the satelite! US7 hole is amazing!
vincent June 29th, 2005, 02:51 AM judging from the status of different sites, i think the pics was taken in early 2004. Pretty old. hehe
But still very nice!!
Skybean June 29th, 2005, 05:42 AM earth.google.com now has the HK satellite view as well. I strongly recommend downloading this as it offers much more functionality than the regular google maps.
HK madness

StanleyJ March 14th, 2010, 11:24 AM wonder how many faces google have to blurred.
It's all done programmatically you know... notice how faces on advertising boards are also blurred out.
Rachmaninov March 14th, 2010, 02:25 PM Good job Eric... you managed to find this 5-year-old thread!

Yeh I remember seeing the faces of an ad on a London bus being blurred. Unfortunately Yoda wasn't recognised so his face wasn't blurred. I hope Yoda doesn't sue Google for intruding his privacy.
EricIsHim March 14th, 2010, 04:16 PM Good job Eric... you managed to find this 5-year-old thread!
actually, i used hkskyline index page and search "Google."
EricIsHim March 14th, 2010, 04:19 PM It's all done programmatically you know... notice how faces on advertising boards are also blurred out.
i knew that, but it's still a large effort and a lot of faces and license plate to blur out even if it's automatic.

hkskyline June 9th, 2010, 05:38 PM HK Privacy Commissioner: Google Ceases Using Street View Mapping Cars In HK
8 June 2010
HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Internet giant Google Inc. (GOOG) has ceased operating its Street View mapping cars in Hong Kong and pledged that when the cars start driving again in Hong Kong they won't collect Wi-Fi data, Hong Kong privacy commissioner said Tuesday.
The comments come after Australia said Monday police are investigating whether Google breached privacy laws in obtaining information through wireless networks for its Street View mapping service, in a sign that the recent controversy over Internet companies and the private data they handle is rippling across the globe.
'Google Inc. undertakes to provide the commissioner access to the payload data identified as coming from Hong Kong which the Street View cars had collected and shall render such assistance as may be required to facilitate the commissioner's understanding of the process of the collection and the interpretation of such data,' Hong Kong Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Roderick B. Woo said in a statement.
The independent statutory body that oversees the enforcement of privacy law in the city also said Google pledged that future Street View car operations carried out in Hong Kong will comply with Hong Kong privacy law.
Google also pledged to completely delete the data in question at the direction of the commissioner and to provide the commissioner with an independent third party's verification of the deletion, said the Commissioner.
Google spokeswoman Caroline Hsu couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
EricIsHim June 9th, 2010, 07:29 PM sounds like it's a problem with the wifi, not about taking picture on the street; but the media controversy focused on the picture part.
i hope google won't take the service away or stop updating the street images from now on.
the street view is one of the greatest free internet service ever~

it's useful for people who don't drive much and need to see what is on the street before they actually drive. And they can check where to turn or exit highway so they dont get lost.

I remember seeing somewhere that the guys in Star Wars were blurred except Yoda coz he doesn't quite have that human look in him lol
