I saw that communist projects never built and wondered about all countries back in that time people loved massive art deco building like the Empire State and chrysler building. So what other building could of there been there was supposed to have been a building in new york with 100 floors and art deco like the empire state. So anyone find any proposals for those kind of buildings?

There was a proposal for Toronto from earlier in the last century (It may have been Eaton's) that was absolutely elephantine; fairly tall, but its outstanding feature was that it took up several blocks.

I can't find the rendering. Maybe another Toronto forumer can track it down.

Hitler also had the plan of destorying paris, and rebuilding it be be... crapper. Then rebuild Berlin to be the greatest city in the world, but then he visited Paris when he had conqured it, and decided to keep it how it was, and instead just make berlin bigger.

But that never happned.

"Skyscrapercity" would be "Wolkenkratzerstadt" in German.

We have plenty of WW2 photos of other cities to show how that looks like, Basically a pile of rubble. ;)

Hitler actually gave the order to burn down Paris in 1944. In fact not only Paris but every piece of land that the German army had to retreat from. This was the infamous "scorched earth" or "Nero order". Sometimes it was carried out by the local commanders, sometimes it wasn't. In case of Paris Generalleutnant Choltitz didn't carry the order out.

I found the Toronto structure I referenced earlier. Here's a description and drawing:
In September of 1911, United Engineering and Construction Company approached the City's Board of Control with a proposal to build a huge structure occupying the entire area bounded by Yonge, King, York and Queen Streets....almost 60 acres. It was to be called the "Toronto Union Terminal and Commercial Building".

You'd need a lot of atriums to get any sort of natural light into that building. :)

I believe the whole middle of the building was just a giant atrium, with a huge dome. At 12 million square feet, it would still be the most spacious commercial building in the world, had the city approved it. Of course, none of the skyscrapers of MINT would exist, or would have had to be built elsewhere. A tad too overpowering I think.

The 1920's 4 million+ million sqft College Park would have been much nicer, with it's 671 foot tower.

This is what would of been built on Yonge&College Street if not for the depression. It would have taken up the whole block and would be the tallest retail building in the world at it's time.

But due to the depression, only the first 7 floors and part of the base were built.

The building is still there today, as a shopping, retail, and entertainment complex but I can't find any recent pics.

Whoa, too bad that that Yonge&College Street Building wasn't built, it would look great I think.

^^I think as a Torontonian, I have mixed feelings about Eaton's College Street. Sure, the tower would of looked great but I feel it would be too overwhelming since it takes over an entire city block. Today the 7s Carlu building shares the block with a huge parking lot (for future development), a 30s or so office building and 2 U/C 52 and 45s condo towers.

This is off-topic. But during the 70's there was a 140s, 600 m+ tower proposed for the site of eaton's college street. It would have been 2200+ ft. tall and the WTB. The design is a bit bland and the communication mass on top is hideous but it would have been huge.

I like the College Park building now as it is, than the vision. Maybe I'm just used to it. The Maryon Building is just ugly. I'd never heard of the Toronto Union Terminal and Commerical Building. Was that to be part of Union station (or the other way around)?

here's a pic of College Park today:

For the 1876 centennial exhibition Philadelphia was going to build a new 1000 foot tower but sadly they ran out of money.

Very interesting topic. I wonder what would have happend if Hitler had one the war (to dreadful to go further) and built his Beriln-opolis. I rmemeber a student at my school built a layout of the city with small models and other things you might find in a redevlopment center. It was very interesting, he got an A.
