View Full Version : What's the weather like in your parts?

Fucking mental down here at the moment. The sky suddenly turned black, then was lit up with lightning and it pissed down. We had a blackout, but the leccy came back on within 2 minutes.

All in the space of 5 minutes - 21.20- 21.25.

Still pissing down/thunder/lightning :bash:

Rained a bit here but no lightning. Briefly had some distant thunder but it died out. Nice day on the whole though.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/europe/uk/radar/animation.html

Radar shows the rain is pretty bad over the Central/East and Snowdonia, but it's lame over Merseyside - quite a useful resource when you want to know if it will rain.

It's been bloody hot and scorching in York and Leeds- has been for the last week. I got in my car today and my hands nearly melted onto the steering wheel. The storm in Liverpool is probably heading in my direction. A few weeks ago there was a thunder storm so loud that it sounded like massive explosions were going off- Twas quite cool.

Had a lovely day ourselves. Had a lovely 10 days in fact. Warm and sunny with a light breeze. Went a bit dark and cool around 18.00, but thought nothing of it. Suited my youngest lad, as he started his new season's footy training tonight

I hate the weather this year, it's none of it predictable or normal, and I think it's making people irritable. There was a fight on a train ready to leave the train station this evening, dozens of staff and police rushing to the scene and what have you, a train cancelled (why? no reason really, other than they love cancelling trains and a fight seems like a good excuse, despite fact they took the fighters away).

Everyone is fed-up. I blame a) the weather b) windows xp being introduced to workplaces c) quality assurance systems d) de-humanisation caused by IT and HR bods being given "professional" status and being allowed to work unsupervised (therefore taking out their resentments and stupidities on the innocent general population). The entire world is just collapsing around us. I sense a gigantic crisis. Everyone is horror-struck and just carrying on as normal because they don't know what else to do. One day soon people will start screaming and failing to co-operate. We can't go on like this. We need to sack all IT and HR "professionals" (and the rest of those parasites who just make life constantly more annoying and expensive and difficult), and ban car travel so we can save our eco-system.

Then we will have normal weather and people will be contented and placid again.

I lived nearby in Canny Farm. My dad used to have a part time job as a barman in a pub around your way. Can't recall the name, but it was near (or on?) Blackmoor Drive/Eaton Rd. Not far from the old covent in Yew Tree Lane.

As long as they are accompanied by rain, without the rain they are the main cause of forest fires in this area. Millions of hectares of forest are destroyed and homes and sometimes many lives lost because of storms.

The olympics in Turin have received good quantities, too much in some cases as some downhill events have been delayed due to Snowfall :) !!!!???
Very rare to have snow in Rome which is probably just as well because they don' t grit roads or have snow ploughs. Its already hard enough to drive around here.

As dangerous as 'heritage' to get too involved with, but by keeping a level head over the matter there are some very interesting areas to be explored... the mersey barrage, to fragrant blossom trees down every avenue... recycling to eco friendly skyscrapers.

You should see the snow in Flintshire. I stayed there last night and it literally took us over an hour to get my car up the h ill and out of the estate- using shovels, brushes, and help of 5 adults. The main A roads, even the 3 lane ones, were completely covered- only one lane in use, and people were doing 20mph. Bloody madness. I nearly skidded off the roads 3 times, bloody scary.

Tis fairly light here in Runcorn. Hopefully I wont get trapped in the Pennines on my way back to Leeds.

I was up in New Brighton this morning - would still be there if fucking useless Merseyrail had anything to do with it. They had scheduled engineering works between New Brighton and Birkenhead North, with a bus replacement service to be a substitute for the trains. However, at New Brighton station this morning there was a sign saying no trains and no buses - the staff said the company that supplied the buses had said no because of the weather. However, all the main roads were clear, and Arriva local buses were all running, with just slight delays. Fucking disgcraceful - obviously they (Merseyrail) saw an excuse to save a bit of money.

Juxta, you know you shouldn't have asked that, as you know I will tell you. It wasn't through daring or ingenuity, I didn't make snow shoes out of discarded tennis rackets and trudge my way to the Mersey tunnel, there jumping onto a slow moving motor car and travelling through the tunnel clinging onto its roof.

Having been completely abandoned to the snow by Merseyrail at New Brighton train station, without so much as an apology, I fought my way through driving snow to the seafront where I was told by a passer-by there were some bus stops. After a long wait with not a bus or anyone else in sight, eventually a normal Arriva bus turned up, empty, and parked. Oh goody, I thought, I might be able to escape from the Island of Wallasey. Unfortunately it was driven by the kind of person whose only pleasure in life is to offer a cold and unhelpful response to any and every request for information.

Please bare in mind that I am getting on a bit, and remember the old No 10s and 14s decked out in Wallasey Corporation yellow, not Arriva (what a hateful fake name that is) buses with dot matrix indicators. I don't know the modern bus routes in Wallasey, or the numbers.

Please also remember that I had been told at New Brighton station that the bus company who were to provide the replacement bus service had refused to put its buses out on safety grounds (today I was told that they rejoice under the corporate name of Happy Coaches), so I had no reason to believe that this bus was something to be sniffed at - it might be the only bus that could get me out of there.

At the front it said "Cross River Express" or something like that, so not unreasonably I asked the driver - once I had persauded him to actually open the door - if he went to Liverpool.

Driver: "No".

Me: "Oh. So where do you go?". (I know that can sound aggressive, written down, and there are unfortunately a whole breed of people who spend night and day on the internet purely to find opportunities to say "maybe it's the way you said it - I was waiting for a bus that day and the driver went out of his way to drop me off at my front door...maybe it's because I asked nicely??!?!" but I asked in a purely nuetral enquiring tone - I was aware that he could slam the doors shut and screech off in the snow just to spite me, the last bus of the day).

Driver: "Chester" (or somesuch, might have been Clatterbridge but it was South Wirral kind of way).

Me: "Well I am trying to get to Liverpool, on the train or the ferry, do you go near any train stops, or the ferry"?

Driver: "No"

Me: "Oh. So you don't go near the ferry or Hamilton Square or Woodside or anywhere like that"

Driver: "No"

Me: "Do you happen to know if the ferries are running, I was going to get the train but they are not running because of engineering work, and the bus replacement service isn't running."

Driver: "I don't know, there is severe weather".

Me: "Hmmmmmmmmm". (Did he really think from the information I had given him, and the conditions around us, that I was unaware that we were experiencing what he termed "severe" weather?).

Anyway, I let it go, as it seemed he could not drive me anywhere I wanted to go. I realised why he had been so annoyed to be stopped and asked to open his doors, as he then drove on about 30 feet, two stops down, to the collection stop, my having waylaid him at the drop off point. I followed the bus, it was even more blizzardy, sort of icey slush being thrown at me horizontally at dangerous speed, and looked at the little yellow sign at the bus stop to see just where this mystery bus did go. I wanted to be absolutely sure that I couldn't make use of this bus. And, guess what... the sign showed that it went to Seacombe Ferry (I hadn't specifically asked that, I'd asked if the ferries - plural, but could be for one route I suppose - were running, mentioned Woodside, and said I was trying to get to Liverpool). It also stopped at Birkenhead Park station. Another thing he failed to mention, but I didn't specifically ask about that station, just stations. If he ever got fed up being a bus driver, he could happily work in the press office of a Government Department.

He sold me a ticket, without any sign of awkwardness (like all psycopaths he feels not a jot of guilt or embarressment when his psycopathy creates difficulty) and that was that.

I have complained to Merseyrail about their part in my ordeal, and I am not letting this matter drop. I feel they owe me some kind of compensation for the trauma and annoyance I suffered. As you can see, even in this post, I am deeply traumatised, re-living it.

There are no lessons to be learned, except that privatisation does not improve customer service, something we already knew.

Incidentally, I think this is a very good example of how Liverpool gets entirely ignored by the national media because it relies on Manchester journos and editors to make decisions about what is going on. On Sunday morning, national BBC news on tv and radio featured stories about Scotland and Wales, with nothing about Liverpool. There was an added line that parts of Northern England would be affected during the day - ignoring the fact that one of England's biggest city was already completely covered in inches of snow, with travel chaos, cancelled trains and flights etc.

It does seem that on Sunday Liverpool had the most severe weather of any English city, and there was severe disruption. I didn't see a single outside broadcast crew in the city centre that day. The supposedly "Mererseyside" bit of the BBC news website had a story about severe weather affecting the "North West", conceding that it seemed to be most severe in "Merseyside".

If this had affected Manchester, it would have been major news. If Glasgow hadn't been covered, the SNP would be complaining about metropolitan bias. It's as though Liverpool just doesn't exist.

On most weather maps it doesn't unfortunately.
For a city of such size there are definitely grounds for a conspiracy theory.

Has anyone seen the forecast by the MetO for Liverpool on Wednesday?! :eek2:

http://www.metoffice.com/lib/template/logo.gif

http://www.metoffice.com/lib/includes/fsssi/maps/NW_map1_temperature.gif

and look at NE Wales!

http://www.metoffice.com/lib/includes/fsssi/maps/W_map1_temperature.gif

They change these all the time and I'm not sure how accurate they are but 36C in Liverpool and 37C in NE Wales would easily be records. The all time record for Wales was set at Hawarden Bridge in 1990 and that was 35.?C, and the previous UK record was only 37.1C, also set in 1990.

I went to West Kirby beach the day before y'day and it was so packed it felt like we were on a Spanish Costa! I reckon people should be sent home early if these temps actually were to occur as they really are freak for this country and few places invest in air con.

Liverpool's record high temperature currently stands at 34.9C (August 1990). With temperatures of at least 32-33C, there's a good chance that could be broken...

I'm going sailing in Cardigan Bay over the next couple of days. I'm gonna get fried! Here in southern Ontario a break in the humidity today, thank God, means that 30 degrees feels like 30 degrees. We will be dropping into the high twenties for the rest of the week. Thursday is the only iffy day with temps in the low to mid 30's, high humidity and thunder showers.

well at my local total garage at 12:40 it was 31c, but in my garden it is over 40c, this must be due to me being south facing and there being a sun trap, ie no wind

I know what it feels like to be without air conditioning on days of high humidity. Our cities set up "Cooling Stations" in various parts of our neighbourhoods to allow those without a/c to get some respite from the heat and humidity. Here in the GTA we have been on a heat advisory for the past week or so. A heat alert is called when temperatures climb into the high thirties and up into the forties.

Try to keep cool guys.

I'm currently in my a/c office here near Rome. Its 32c outside as usual.

I'm glad there is good weather in Liverpool. Just think if the weather was guarenteed to be like that at least for a month, you'd think twice about going abroad on holiday.

just a few things to mention, on all weather sites it may say 31, 32, 33 etc but that is taken at local points which are open areas where wind can get to it, i was in a friends back garden at 2pm and it read 115f, aprox 47c. its down to the garden being a sun trap. my car said it was 40c, 104f at 5pm tonight, i think the weather centres always get it lower thant it really is

I was in Liverpool city centre from approx 2pm till 6:30pm and it was just stupidly hot. Usually in Liverpool a hot day would be tempered by a strong cooling sea breeze mid-afternoon but today it failed to sweep in. The light breeze was fiercely hot as it gathered heat being reflected off the buildings. Although the temp officially reached 32C at the airport I reckon the city centre was easily 33C-34C, shame there isn't an official station there. Exposed thermometers would indeed read into the 40's.

Yeah, Central London has an official station in addition to Heathrow (and many others across Greater London), so why shouldn't the centres of other cities?

If i'm not mistaken Westi official temps are taken in the shade.
Direct sunshine temps will always be higher.
So where the offical temp may say 90 in the sun it will be well over 100.
