LMAO!:hahaha: That reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld when Jerry bought an AC unit.

I'm glad they went for Citaro again and I hope they will really have AC this time.
pescarush, the ones in Bucharest at the moment are Citaro I. Citaro II is the newer version. Not much of a difference though.

500 Mercedes Benz buses with AC in Bucharest

Evobus GmbH won the bid organized by the Bucharest City Hall for purchasing 500 buses, a press release informs on Monday. The Mercedes Benz models are the first equipped with AC and video surveillance system to run the streets of the capital city.

Each bus amounts to almost 200.000 euro and will enter into public use by 2008. Aside the AC and video system, the buss has LCD monitors, automatic taxing and passenger counting system.

In 2006 however, bus acquisitions faced criticism mainly from the press, as the buses, even though very expensive, lacked air conditioning both for the driver and the passengers. To remedy their mistake, town hall officials decided to install AC for the driver. This amounted towards a greater sum paid for from the public budget

i heard that right now it's really hectic at the city hall due to the order of the citaros, probably after they finish with that they'll get started on the trams, then another 100 new trolleys then 500 buses again. and about the trams everyone is saying siemens combino because it has the least problems and i think it's the cheapest (?). also theyll probably do the same thing as with the citaros since they were the cheapest theyll go with siemens if they follow that pattern

Well, I was hoping for Bombardier or Alstom to win, but Siemens is ok too. If one were to ask me what I think of the Combino a few weeks ago I'd have said "on, not that "crap"", cause I thought they look really ugly (well not as ugly as our Robocop tram, but still... ) and I've heard they had their share of problems. But recently I went to Budapest for one week and had the chance to ride the Combino. Oh, man... that's one fine tram.:naughty: I still prefer Bombardier or Alstom, but if they choose Combino, fine with me.

P.S.: in Budapest, even the long Combino Supra came after only 1-2 minutes of waiting at peak hours. Compare that to the amount of time you have to wait for a tram in Bucharest and you'll start to hate RATB.:ohno: Their BKV does a great job!

If it weren't for those commies, that pic would look really cool!:)

Anyway, speaking of new trams... it seems we'll just have to way a little bit more. Less than 6 (six!) years, actually.:gaah: At least that's what the mayor said. It seems they'll invite the tram producers to Bucharest, to test their trams on our tracks, then they'll each propose a prototype adapted for Bucharest, then RATB will pick the tram... and all this will take some years, since making a prototype tram takes a year and a half.

For Romanians, you can find the article on my blog (http://blog.paginibucurestene.ro/2007/07/16/videanu-tramvaie-noi-in-mai-putin-de-6-ani/) (you have the link to the original also).

Start of production for Russian high speed train

Bodyshell production starts at the Siemens plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen
Krefeld, Jul 20, 2007

Together with Siemens Transportation Systems (TS), Russian Railways (RZD) is now entering the era of high-speed rail travel. During his visit to the Siemens plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen on July 20, RZD President Vladimir Yakunin gave the formal go-ahead for bodyshell production of the first Russian high speed train, Velaro RUS. Starting at the end of 2009, these trains should be running at speeds of up to 250 km/h on a line connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Yakunin called the start of Velaro production a “significant milestone in the development of the cooperation between RZD and Siemens”. And he firmly stated that the Velaro RUS, “whose design and technology reflected the highest standard in modern railway engineering, will soon enable RZD to catch up with other railway companies in the high speed rail sector and allow Russia to join the world’s elite club of high speed nations.”

During the visit by the Russian delegation, Hans M. Schabert, President of Siemens Transportation Systems, emphasized the good cooperation with the RZD on the Velaro project, calling it an “outstanding basis for a long-term partnership between Siemens and the RZD in all areas of railway technology.” He affirmed his belief that modern high speed trains were the ideal means of satisfying Russia’s growing need for mobility.

The Minister of Transport of the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia, Oliver Wittke, congratulated Yakunin on making this decision, stressing that “the Velaro contract from Russia demonstrates impressively how well the railway industry is able to tap its innovative strength and utilize its international contacts in Germany's most densely populated state.”

Back in May 2006, Siemens Transportation Systems had already received the contract to build a total of eight high speed trains, all of which to be manufactured in its Krefeld-Uerdingen plant and delivered by 2010. In addition, Siemens will be responsible for service and maintenance of these trains for 30 years. In all, that contract is worth about 600 million euros. Yakunin and Schabert officially approved the start of production of the bodyshells when they placed their signatures on a document certifying that the first step in the milestone agreement had been achieved.

In Schabert’s words, the Velaro RUS will give Russian Railways the “world’s most modern high speed trainset.” It is similar to the ICE 3 used by German Rail and the Velaro E used by Spanish National Railways (Renfe). The ten cars of the multiple-unit formation offer enough space for over 600 passengers and are specially modified to meet both the particular technical and climatic conditions encountered in Russia. The trains are designed for the Russian broad-gauge tracks and are around 33 cm wider than the ICE 3. When the Russian Velaro RUS, the Chinese Velaro CN, the Spanish Velaro E and the German ICE 3 are considered all together, more than 160 EMU high speed trains have meanwhile been ordered from Siemens worldwide.

With its billions in investments each year, Russia is considered to be one of the largest market for trains in the coming decades. In addition to the high speed line between Moscow and St. Petersburg, other rail connections are being planned, such as one between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod. In Russia, a modern railway infrastructure featuring high speed rail travel is also considered to be a good response to the challenges of global warming. For instance, the amount of carbon dioxide, a contributor to global warming, emitted per passenger on high speed trains is about one-third the amount caused by airliners.

Transilvania is airborne again. Waiting for Moldova. Been waiting for this moment for so long now and she finally flies again. Looking good in the new c/s.

Sadly, I've heard the two A310s could become presidential aircraft, either dedicated, having state of the art comms, self-protection systems etc, either just in VIP configuration also used for charter flights. Either way they'd end up with Romavia. I know what matters is that they fly again, but TAROM needs to consolidate it's corporate image and not return to it's former glory, but surpass it.

I mean, look at them! MALEV stands way better then TAROM. Not to mention CSA... and not even thinking of comparing it to LOT. After the next 2 A318s and Moldova A310 will enter service we'll have 22 aircraft and fly to 47 destinations in Europe, Middle East and Africa. Well, that's just crap! MALEV operates 30 aircraft to 58 destinations (including transatlantic flights to US and Canada and flights to Asia) and CSA has 50 aircraft and serves 70 destinations (including transatlantic).:bash:

There was a rumor that TAROM will look into leasing/buying 2-4 Airbus A330/340 or Boeing 767/777, revive it's transatlantic and long-haul Asian flights, but... AFAIK turned up to be just that... a rumor.

Urban Traffic Control Project, Bucharest - project value: circa 21,000,000 Euro Design and installation of a state-of-the-art UTC system - To be completed by June 2008

"Bucharest traffic will be managed by a control center, starting next year. Satellite surveillance of the ambulance, fire fighting and police vehicles, so that they are given green light towards the intervention area, as well as intelligent traffic light control to unblock crowded crossroads electronically are but a few of the characteristics of the new traffic management system.

Once the structure rehabilitated, the traffic management system introduces three priority systems. The first priority level is for the ambulance, fire fighters and police along with the other state authorities that must intervene rapidly, according to the legal provisions. A GPS system will give green light to the ambulance or the firefighting vehicles in order to avoid unpleasant incidents, Bucharest's general mayor Adriean Videanu told a news conference on Sunday.

According to the traffic management project the traffic lights of the central areas of the city will be computer-assisted, the big crossroads will be rehabilitated and refurbished with video cameras and the transportation means of Bucharest Public Transport Authority (RATB) will be monitored via the satellite.

Traffic management project will begin in mid August (2007) with the reconfiguration of two important crossroads in Bucharest. They will be equipped with an intelligent traffic light system, able to make decisions such as changing traffic lights duration based on the information received by video cameras and the priority requests by the ambulance, fire fighting or police or public transport vehicles.

All the 100 crossroads in the center of the city and those on the north-south traffic axis will be similarly equipped, Bucharest general mayor informed."

... also another project ... "TRAMWAY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM" - http://www.integralconsulting.ro/Documente/Poster_MANTRA_RO.pdf

On 29.09.2006, the Scientific Symposium referring to the finalization and implementation of the project "TRAMWAY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM" - A PILOT SYSTEM was held at the premises of R.A.T.B. Giurgiu Depot.

Live demos (in real time) of monitoring the tramways along route 12 in Bucharest were performed in the Dispatcher office at Giurgiu Depot. The images on the computer in the Dispatcher Office, as displayed for the guests, allowed them to track moment by moment the tramways running along this route, namely each tramway number, the exact time of its arrival to the stop, as well as a comparison to the preset running schedule. The synoptic diagram on the screen warned in a suggestive way, through the tramway colour code, about any deviation (delay or arrival ahead of schedule) above the limit admitted of as per the graph.

A Certificate of Validation of the "TRAMWAY TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM" - A PILOT SYSTEM was issued.

The first plane was unveiled at a factory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur in Russia's Far East.

The 110-seat Superjet 100 has been developed by state-run business Sukhoi, in conjunction with Western partners including US giant Boeing.

Russian flag-carrier Aeroflot has already placed an order for 15 Superjets, at a cost of $400m.

There are 73 orders in total, with the others coming mainly from Russian regional carriers, but Italian regional airline Itali also plans to buy 10 planes.

The Superjet retails for $28m, which is 25% lower than the rival Embraer 190.

Same shit here! Seats in all means of public transport in Bucharest simply suck ass. We have Citaro buses like London or Paris have, we have Citelis trolleybuses like Paris (only they have the bus version), and Movia metro trains that London will only get in 2009 and what all these means of transport have in common in Bucharest?

CHEAP STUPID SEATS!

It seems TfL and RATP have much higher respect for passengers than RATB has and also... they are less animals then we are, since I belive high quality seats wouldn't last too long here...:ohno:

I've read the following news:

The Romanian government is planning a high-speed train line between Budapest and Bucharest- said Ludovic Orban, Romanian minister of transportation in a statement he gave to Romania Libera daily. The 800 km long line would not go through Transylvania due to high costs, it would run through southern Romania and cross the border somewhere near Timisoara/Temesvár. The trains would run around the speed of 200-250 km/h.

If Romanian forumers know something more, please write it :)

Bombardier wants to provide CFR with high-speed trains
Bombardier Transportation intends on proposing the AGC train, able to run on electricity, diesel or on a combination of both (hybrid), declared Jean Berge, vicepresident of Marketing & Sales for Bombardier Transportation.

AGC trains is flexible in regard to the length, interior design, means of traction and number of doors.

Bombardier also wants to propose the TRAXX locomotive family, made up of electric and diesel-electric locos for passenger and freight transport.

So far, Bombardier has delivered to Metrorex (Bucharest metro operator) 44 Movia train sets consisting of 6 carriages each and totaling (trains + equipment) at 300 million EUR.

Ahm, AFAIK, AGC (Autorail Grande Capacité) (http://www.bombardier.com/en/1_0/1_1/1_1_3_2_1_1.jsp) trains run at 160 km/h, and while this might be considered high-speed, in Europe they would need to run at at least 200 km/h to be truly high-speed. So I'm not that excited at the poeple at Business Standard over their speed.

Anyhow, 160 is something, and these trains would decrease travel time (if our tracks could handle them) and increase service quality. Not to mention those TRAXX locos (http://www.bombardier.com/index.jsp?id=1_0&lang=en&file=/en/1_0/1_0.jsp)... lovely ones. I'm sick of the poor CFR service (see photo below)!:bash:

In my opinion, TMK 2200 is one of the best looking trams in the world. And God, I love that blue on it... it fits so well. They're in use since 2005 in Zagreb, and I haven't heard of any major technical glitch so far, so at least we know it's not a disaster. Problems might arrise with time, and we'll see, but it seems well engineered and built.

Changes in the railway infrastructure by 2018
Ziarul Financiar: 06-12-2007

The main projects for the rehabilitation of Romania's railway infrastructure are trans-European corridors IV and IX, which total over 2,000 km of railway and investments worth above 10bn euros.

EU accession has forced the Romanian state to invest in the development of its rail network through the creation of some high-speed routes that would link Greece and the rest of the continent.

The two European corridors that cross Romania are corridor IV (a link between Germany and Greece) and corridor IX (between Finland and Greece), which total almost 10,000 km of track.

The rehabilitation of the over 2,000 km of railway in Romania, in order to become part of the European rail network, will require investments worth at least 10bn euros, with the objective being for passenger trains to reach a maximum speed of 140 km/h and compliance with EU safety standards.

At the same time, the Ministry of Transport has started to modernise passenger railway stations and bring them in line with European safety and operative standards. At present, Romania has only 12 "Euro-stations", whilst another 30 stations are included in this programme.

Corridor IV runs from Curtici to Constanta along 2 sections, namely (Arad-Constanta and Arad-Calafat). Necessary investments (as estimated by CFR) amount to over 6bn euros for the almost 1,400 km.

Corridor IX (which crosses Moldavia and runs from Iasi to Giurgiu) travels a length of 618 km, which involves rehabilitation costs worth around 4.5bn euros, according to current estimates.

In the wake of rehabilitation works, passenger trains will be able to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h along at least 1,000 km of railway. In most cases, the deadline for the rehabilitation projects is the end of 2018.

"We will not have high-speed trains (of over 200 km/h i.e.) in Romania earlier than 2025," stated Constantin Onoiu, head of the projects department at CFR Infrastructura. He specified that in order to reach such high speeds an IT rail traffic management system would also be necessary.

Until the early '90s, CFR held the leading position in terms of passenger and freight transportation, but more recently lost its position to road transport. The phenomenon is apparent across Europe, as EU officials announce a series of measures intended to bring passengers back to rail travel.

Adrian Vlaicu, a marketing manager at CFR Calatori, recently stated that CFR could not compete with road infrastructure as well, because of the toll (TUI) levied by CFR Infrastructura at 3 euros per km.

In late 2006, CFR Calatori accounted for 98.8% of railway passenger traffic, but the situation may change, as CFR is obliged to open the market to private European operators.

December 7th, 2007, 10:50 PM
Well, AFAIK they are connected with a central server that receives information from the GPS systems installed in the vehicle. Thus, they can show you accurately (well..almost, depends on the traffic congestions) how much time remains till a certain bus/tram/trolley arrives at the stop.

I'm glad the first Citaro II finally arrived, and I too think those refurbished trams are a good temporary solution for Bucharest, until Bombardier or Alstom bring their jewles.:) I'm eagerly awaiting the introduction of more special lanes for RATB and the implementation of a station information system (see previous posts regarding Zagreb, Warsaw etc.). I hope this measures as well as many others, that I'll not discuss here, will not only make people use public transport more often, but also civilize Bucharesters.

Regarding the new RATB web site... WTF is wrong with those people?:bash: Can't they make a good website? I mean, the new site is just as shitty as the old one - different colors only. RATB's site needs an identity, more information, easier access to information, good maps and so on. I was discussing this with a friend yesterday and gave him two examples of great websites with a strong brand identity, lots of information and all the rest.

The two sites are:
ratp.fr (http://www.ratp.fr/)
tfl.gov.uk (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/)

People, look at the maps (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/gettingaround/1106.aspx) they have... not to mention TfL's traffic map (http://trafficalerts.tfl.gov.uk/microsite/) which provides you with more information than a Sim City map. I know I'm aiming high, but again... I don't accept anything lower!

nebunul, what do you think of the service provided by TfL? I'm talking about tube, DLR, bus, tram, rail and even streets etc. I know RATP too well, and i think TfL is even better.

TFL is pretty decent, however IMO it’s getting worse because of two main factors: underinvestment (or too slow implementation) and huge influx of EEuropeans (and other foreign nationals) since 2004 – and so … more commuters using an already overstretched/overcrowded network. These days I have to wait 3-4-5 minutes (sometimes) for a train. Not to mention multiple signal failures in-between stations … I know in EE terms this may be OK, but as far as Londoners are concerned, is too bloody slow … therefore, not good enough if you ask me; but without the doubt in a different league in comparison to Bucharest’s RATB/Metro

If I am to tape the time split between the moment 41 tram leaves station and the next one comes in the station and then post the movie here, how would you be prepared to bet ? :D:banana2:

Take into consideration that I am to tape the tram station at rush hour and people might get nervous about me playing with the camera while they are waiting the tram to go to work.

just tape your watch man! and the train coming.....don't tape the people..unless you see paris hilton:lol:

one thing I really dislike about this tram is the interior lightning. Why in the Lords name did they have to use the same stupid white lightning (neon) on these trams too? In my oppinion the lightning really ads to the feel of a tram, "yellow" light (the same on the irisbus trolleys and citaros) inspires a more cozy atmosphere.
Damn, they really need better designers:ohno: it's the little things that matter.

Also, the design is ... designless? It's like a friggen rectangle cube thing on wheels, they could've made it look more aerodynamic.

^^ These are only upgraded V3As, while Bucur LH is a 100% new model produced by URAC (the old RATB partner). It's not comparable with the models that Alstom, Siemens, Bombardier or Skoda might bring in but I think it's the best that URAC could design and produce at this moment with the available technologies. And, anyaway, it's much more than a re-faced V3A.

So... Cheers for the new Bucur LH!

As regards the 2012 deadline for purchasing latest generation rolling stock... just think that the models that we would all want to see live on our streets are absolutely unable to perform on 60 percent of the existing infrastructure... So substantial works have to be further done before even thinking of replacing our old V3A, V2A, Tatra and Rathbeger models with new and good-looking trams.

Come on, nebunul, don't be so severe with it. Don't mind the colour - it's just a prototype. As regards being outdated... well, I can't deny this but, believe me, in the given conditions URAC made a great job. 9 companies applied for the construction bid of Sofia's second metro line

Construction starts Spring'2008 and the line is to be opened in 2011. The line will connect the northern district of Nadejda to NDK and the district of Lozenets. Line 1 and line 2 will intersect at Serdika station. The new line will be 6.4 kilometers long and will have 7 stations. Total cost is estimated to be 145 million euro. The line will be underground only. Station 8 and 11 are not included in the project, so probably the line will have 9 stations altogether - stations 3 to 11 on the blue line on the map:

http://www.metropolitan.bg/images/Map_3_diametra-Model.png

Това са съответно - Impresa Pizzaroti $ C S.p.A и S. E. L. I. Societa Esecuzione Lavori Idraulici S.p.A, Condotte & Ansaldo JV, FCC Construccion S. A., "Дoуш - Мостстрой" джойнт венчър, обединение "Хохтиф" - ГБС, "Метростав" АД, "Обраскон Уарте Лаин" АД, "Джей Енд Пи Авакс" АД, "Геотехмин" ООД.

obiektami (komory rozjazdów, komory do zawracania, wentylatornie itd.)
około - 2100 m
• Tunel łącznikowy pomiędzy I i II linią o długości około 500 m
• Połączenie systemów z centralną dyspozytornią na STP Kabaty
• Integracja systemów z I linią metra.

Centralny odcinek II linii metra łączyć będzie Wolę z Pragą Północ. Zostanie na nim zbudowanych 7 stacji: Rondo Daszyńskiego, Rondo ONZ, Świętokrzyska, Nowy Świat, Powiśle, Stadion i Dworzec Wileński. The last news is, the Chinese are out of the tender, because their Polish representative haven't prepared all necessary documents.

An early concept for the entrances of the second line:

I have some questions towards Metropoliten Sofia?
Why frequency of the trains is so low? Is it enough for Sofia? In Warsaw trains are much more frequent (every 3 minutes during morning busy hours, every 3-4 minutes during most of the working day) and city has just bought additional cars to enlarge all train sets to 6 cars. And they are still very crowded during busy hours. How long are train sets in Sofia?

In October 2007 Metro Warszawskie had 11.5 million passengers. How big is traffic in Metropoliten Sofia?

I'm asking all these questions because history of metro in Sofia and metro itself is very similar to Warsaw's metro. :)

^^ Currently the Sofia metro connects the city center only with the western outskirts, so that is why i guess the frequency is lower than the one of Warsaw. Besides i believe Warsaw is a lot bigger city than Sofia.

When the extension in Eastern direction would be finaly launched (end of the year hopefully) i guess the frequency will be better.

When 2nd perimeter becomes operational in 2011 it will be even better i hope.

Hey, it's not so low. It's 20 minutes in holidays (like this NY2008 eve) and 5 to 10 minutes, depending on what time of the day it is. It's quite enough for Sofia. Keep in mind that Warsaw is twice larger than Sofia. But I really hope the frequency will be higher when they connect Mladost. Mladost itself is a region of 150.000 inhabitants and lots of people work in the BPS and go shopping there.

Keep in mind that Warsaw is twice larger than Sofia.

It's not. Warsaw has got approx. 1,6 mln inhabitants whereas Sofia 1,3 mln.

Scrap a line on every major routes in Bucharest only for the buses and....everybody, please get on board the Mercedes and forget about your personal cars. You'll get AC, TV and the mother of all confort - Mercedes.

PS: I noticed an incredible reduction in traffic after the heavy snowfall, even after the first week of January, which means many people dropped driving personal cars and jumped on buses, trams, subway. So, it's doable!
