New stats show people flocking to B.C.

VICTORIA -- The B.C. government is trumpeting new Statistics Canada figures showing a net increase in interprovincial migration to the province.

Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen says B.C. is the choice of destination for Canadians relocating in search of jobs.

A report released Tuesday shows a net increase of 1,073 people moved to B.C. during the first quarter, typically the slowest migration period in the calendar.

This compares with a net decrease of 250 in the same period in 2004, which turned out to be a banner year for migration to B.C.

More than 7,000 people packed their bags and headed to B.C. from other provinces last year.

Hansen says jobs are the driving factor and it's clear there is mounting confidence in the provincial economy.

Yes, the job market is improving tremendously. I also firmly believe that we are starting to see the baby boomer migration trend begin.

I don't know about a great supply of jobs but there are sure a lot of people moving to Victoria. Most of the people I have spoken with are coming from Ontario and outside Canada. Also it may be just because i sometimes work in a Mexican restaurant but I have met a lot of people form Mexico and South America that have moved here.

Hope there'll be a well-paying finance job lined up for me when I graduate. Else I'll most likely have to stay in Toronto or head to the US.

Please take note that Vancouver has the largest gap between the rich and poor of any major city in Canada.
Also BC doesn't refer to "Bring Cash" for nothing. The jobs are here but the cost of living and housing are beyond beleif even in smaller cities far from Vancouver/Victoria/Kelowna.
If you want to buy in Vancouver expect your mortgage payment to increase by 50% from Toronto/Ottawa/Calgary etc and double from Montreal/London/GoldenHorseshoe/Edmonton and triple from everywhere else.
To BC for to the jobs............. watch out poverty because here I come!

All cities have their dirt-poor. It's not a bad thing that some cities are also home to some super-rich individuals.

^^^^^^^^of course
Vancouver, however, is in a league of its own when it comes to poverty and misery in Canada. The Downtown Eastside has nothing even comparable to anywhere in the country. Its the only part of Canada where you think you could be in the biggest and baddest of American innercity slums. It is horrific even by the worse of US standards.

Talk about the ultimate pessimist you sound like someone who has just lost his job because he doesn't work very hard!
You talk about Bring Cash but you do not talk about making money! Of course the jobs are here this is the market people want to live in!
I am a blue collared worker I do my 40 hours a week ( I love hard work). I have also bought a investment house in Nanaimo last year!
This place has gained over 100,000 in Equity in just one year! Of course I got a good buy. But I had confidence in the market as well as the province under the Liberals! I have not mentioned that my rental income is double my mortgage but why would you want to hear a good storey?
My Uncle started as a green chain worker on the Gorge Sawmill in Victoria. He was 18 years old and he worked his way to management before closing the mill.
Now he owns a huge part of the island you live on! ( Maybe he is your landlord?)
I even offered you vision in another post about Port Alberni! You said it is a mill town and very ugly! I agree but Nanaimo was a coal town once! It has also been a Mill town but it has grown and diversified!
Places like Port Alberni and Powell River were Mill towns (KGB communist areas) they did not grow they stayed there Union ways! People left these places have been losing people for ages! Now they are turning around! Why because they are so god damn cheap compared to other places! Lets face it Port Alberni is a mill town but it is cheap because of this in 2 years it will gain in value over 30%! Maybe you do not want to live there but it ain't a bad place to invest!

Either way it sucks to be you! Life is too short to live so negatively!
Bring cash make money! Simple unless you are SSIGUY2 ;)

You've obviously never been to parts of south Chicago where you can't even stop your car, you have to slowly roll up to red lights and hope they'll turn green. Dead dogs on the streets, boarded homes, trash absolutely everywhere, and crime rampant. The DES is a childrens playground in comparison, believe me.

And here's a good one. My cousins from Europe visited their uncle in New York. He showed them the glitz and the glamour, ooh'd and ahh'd the hell out of them. He then took them to the Bronx, down to Flatbush (know what that is?). What they saw there made one of the girls cry, it was absolute horror. That's when they learned why New York is known as the Big Apple, beautiful and shiny on the outside, rotten on the inside. When they came here I took them around Vancouver. We drove through the DES and these girls didn't flinch, they didn't even comment. So much for that, I guess.

The DES is a few blocks of dirty buildings and junkies, no big deal. However, the media and those who never go down there make it out to be something it simply isn't (I think it's called fear-mongering).

Nevermind Chicago, there are some real scary neighbourhoods in the deep south, like New Orleans.

Is the East Hasting a rough neighbourhood, yes. However, it's not bad enough to warn people to 'stay away'.

the downtown eastside looks worse out of a car window than it does if you actually go down there on foot.

Check out Bedford-Styveson in Brooklyn (close to Flatbush) sometime. I was told that taxis are reluctant to drive into the area. When I saw it for myself, I could see why. The buildings had razor-wire along the perimeter of the roofs so people couldn't break in through the roof - and of course all the ground-level windows were barred.

Agreed. I've walked throught the downtown eastside and it isn't that bad. There are intermittent pockets of good and bad. It's not a continuous ghetto at all.
