Petach-Tikva was founded in the year 1878 by a group of pioneers from Jerusalem,who three years earlier had founded the society "Work the soil and redeem the land" with the aim to redeem the land from its aridity.

The three men to take the initiative from Jerusalem, in founding Petah-Tikva, were: Rabbi Yoel-Moshe Salomon, Rabbi David Gutmann and Yehoshua Stampfer. Thus Petach-Tikva became the mother of all settlements.

Ten years after its establishment, in 1888, Baron Rothschild began to support the settlement by the purchase of land by helping the farmers of the settlement. Petach Tikva became the school for thousands of pineer workers, who studied the craft of farming here before they ventured out to establish tens of settlements in all parts of the country.

In the beginning of the twenties of this century Petach-Tikva entered a process of urbanisation, including the development of industrial zones. In 1937 Petach-Tikva received the status of a city. With the establishment of the state the population of Petach-Tikva numbered around 22 thousand.

Today the number of citizens - 187,000
Area of jurisdiction is 39 sq.km, half of it built-up.

This is probably the most ambitious plan for any city in Isael,
set to grow from 187,000 today to 315,000 by 2020.

Massive new residential neighbourhoods are going up with over
14 towers in construction and another 10-15 planned, mostly
to replace old buildings and markets in the old center.

I dont think this project will go ahead: It was planned as wo towers to replace
the Zimkal aluminium factory, when it went bankrupt. But it was sold
to Eltam, and I think the plan was halted, maybe it will still be
built if office space is in demand, the plan has not fully been withdrawn:

The new renovated city center - approved towers, no one knows how many
and how tall, from 15 to 22 storeys, it will radically change the city center
the plan is to close off around 5 streets to make an urban block with
residential towers, a mall, a covered market and entertainment complex:

But its complicated - You have to get the existing tenants and owners to
agree, so I dont think it will be completed before 2010 at least..

When you drive on road no. 4 from Rananna towards Tel Aviv you can see mainly the IBM buding, the rest are somewhat hidden behind it.
