These images of the lift-car interior appears in Johns & Waygood Limited 1856-1956, compiled by Geoffrey Blainey and published in 1956. The images have been dated from this.
The location of this building with the lift-car is not known but the photographer recalls it was in the vicinity of King and Spencer Streets, near Flinders Lane.

The APA bldg had 2 impressive lifts (the largest in there class). The promoters of the building knew that an unsatisfactory lift could ruin their investment,
so they budgeted a 12th of the entire cost on the safest lifts modern engineering had devised-the plunger lift. Sydney's Hotel Australia also had impressive large lifts in 1891.
Sydneys town hall has the oldest remaining birdcage lift in oz, still working since 1904.

Are you sure Cul? The QVB has birdcage lifts still functioning and I gather they date from the time the building was completed in late 19C ......

^ my apologies. i should of said- "oldest birdcage lift with original motor". And also its elctric as opposed to the hydraulic lifts in QVB and The Strand which date back to 1890's. These have also had extensive updating. The Town halls is very unique still with original fittings ect.

Wow!
I know they are a bit newer that those pictured, but I travelled in the David Jones (old Buckley & Nunn) lifts on Bourke Street in Melbourne. They aren't plush like those, but nonetheless they are 'heritage' items for sure! Really nice wood panelling and antique lighting and buttons also.
