B.C. ferry misses dock, hits marina instead
CTV.ca News Staff

A B.C. ferry has ruined 15 to 20 boats after a botched docking attempt at Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, witnesses say.

The vessel, the Queen of Oak Bay, missed the terminal berth late Thursday morning and started blowing its horn before it crashed into a marina.

TV images showed the massive vessel nestled in amongst a number of pleasure craft.

No injuries have been reported yet, but this is a developing story.

There are 1500 passengers onboard, none have gotten off at this time and won't be getting off in the near future.

Apparently the Captain had two choices.. glide into the dock and destroy it and hurt countless amount of people onshore.. or glide into the docked boats and have minimal casualties.

I think that the people are still trapped on the boat? And it was the 10am sailing!

The captain did the right thing and not only would hitting the dock destroy and hurt and possibly kill people onshore, it would do severe damage to the ship. People on board could be flying everywhere.

All the passengers and vehicles have gotten off, one hour ago. The ferry is currently being towed to the Washington Group's dock at Lonsdale Quay at North Van.

Hitting the dock would not had killed anyone on shore. Incase you haven't noticed there are giant bumpers in the dock held up by giant cement blocks. It would have been bumbier that's all. I still don't know why he didn't drop anchor, that would have stopped them and there's supposed to be someone at the anchors with them unlocked when they're docking just incase the lose power like they did.

The ferry was going at too fast of a speed into the dock. Even though no one would have been killed or hurt on the shore, the huge jolt would have hurt the passengers on board. It would have been better if it was a slow slide.....even though that slow slide would mean 25 broken toothpicks.

The ferry wasn't going extremely fast and the passengers were warned to brace themselves. To me a few people with a bruse (spelling) is better than 30 shattered boats. But we don't know the whole story yet.

From the video Global provided, it looked like the boat was going at 8-20 km/h when it first hit the marina. That's quite fast for incoming.

Admittedly, the dock at Horeshoe Bay is quite small for a shape that size.

More engine problems at B.C. Ferries

Last updated Jul 11 2005 07:59 AM PDT
CBC News

The lineups at some B.C. Ferries terminals could be longer on Monday, as two ferries have been taken out of service with mechanical problems

The Queen of Saanich, which operates on the busy Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay route, won't be running on Monday because of a broken exhaust valve.

B.C. Ferries has cancelled the 6 a.m., 10 a.m. 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. sailings from Swartz Bay – and the 8 a.m., 12 noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. sailings from Tsawwassen.

The ferry is expected back to be back in service on Tuesday.

A second ferry – the Queen of Cumberland – is also under repair on Monday after losing three of its four engines as it was about to dock at Sturdies Bay on Galiano Island on Sunday evening.

The ferry dropped anchor, as the engineers worked on getting the engines running again, delaying passengers for about an hour.

B.C. Ferries says the Mayne Queen will pick up traffic at Sturdies Bay on Monday. However, the Queen of Cumberland will make two trips to Otter Bay on Pender Island on Monday morning.

* FROM JULY 7, 2005: 3-cm pin blamed for ferry accident

These problems come on the heels of last month's accident at Horseshoe Bay. The Queen of Oak Bay slammed into boats at Sewell's Marine after losing engine power while approaching the dock.

Dozens of private boats were dam aged or destroyed, but there were no injuries.

Tests last week showed the accident was caused by a missing 3-cm cotter pin.
