Philip Green: Asset Stripper. Instead of our Owen Owen, we've now got a TK Maxx and a Tesco Metro. Our Lewis' has seen better days too. Was there an Owen Owen in Brum too? It pisses me off to think of all the large department stores thet this city has lost. Is it the same situation in Brum?

hopefully with beatties department stores being bought by house of Fraser there may
be stores up up for sale and Lewis's may take over one of the stores with the lewis's
brand name being used. I don't think that beatties will keep its own identity and a
don't think that Owen Owen group will buy the Beatties name

I think it is quite sad That a company which had a enviable position around 15 years
ago (there was 13 shops in the Group, when Department stores where going through a hard time,-hence why blacklers closed-13 shops is like every major city and growing say by 1 shop every 3 years (with philip greens money this could be well more) there would have been now 18 stores)
is now in a state of collapse
hopefully this will provide a good future for the stores
It seeens likely that Lewis's will return in maybe the beatties outlets ?as they over hang with both beatties and House of fraser?I THINK

thanks

Hi,
Although he has been killing off owen owens i don't think i would have survived anyway he has just preserved it without moving the group forward, hence why they had to canabolise the stores

thanks

There was no "Owen Owen" in Birmingham - there was one in Coventry (Built just before WWII, blown up, then rebuilt) that became an "allders" some years ago, and then the whole chain went bust. The Coventry store was one of the profitable ones, but unfortunately has been bought by some low-grade store called Primark. What a shame - it's a landmark building, six floors plus & a total waste. The council expressed some dismay at losing a profitable department store (As did academics at Warwick Uni), but at the end of the day, it's not in their hands - it's business, but they should have pushed for a better sale.

That's how we ended up with a Tesco Metro and a TK Maxx. It was a massive department store clad in Portland stone, designed by W.A. Thomas, the bloke behind the Royal Liver Building, Tower Building and Neptune Theatre. It was supposed to be a luxury hotel, but went bust. Owen Owen stepped in, converted it into a department store and watched as their neighbours got bombed, replaced or sold down the river.

I remember a huge Teddy Bear in miltary outfit somewhere in store, I remembert reading an article somewhere a few years back saying that the business wasn't there or that Lewis's and Rackhams drove them out of the town but I am not sure? Isn't there a small Hamleys in town now? I can remember going for a macdonalds as well, must have been early to mid eighties, what year was the first macdonalds set up in brum?

Bloody hell, It would be a miracle if I managed a Brum meet let alone a lunchtime drink, why don't you attende the next meet and then you could make a friday date with other regulars like smileyface, blunther, MK, Foxtrot and rigadon, I'm sure they'de be cool with that as they work in the city centre whereas I don't. :)

T'is the outside of the old Lewis's building. The Square peg pub on the ground floor on Corporation Street side, court offices above, and to the left more court-related offices, etc., plus a walk-through shopping centre with atrium, The Mineries, from the Bull Street side.
