The 1st 2 pics look like its not in Canada, but when you get to the 3rd pic.......bbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. :D

For a city as small as it is, I give it a 7.5. My city has about 150,000 and this skyline is probably better.:bleep:

Looks nice and chilly. :D

/\ lol yea, pretty much... my city doesn't have a great skyline for the size of it...and the importance of it. Oh well... Guess I have to keep complaining until someone gets money and builds in Windsor.

That skyline is AMAZING for a "city" of 17,000 people. Its better than alot of places with 250,000 people.

A comment about the last pic: Just imagine what it would be like after driving for like 20 hours straight through wilderness then coming into this city of Yellowknife.. Incredible

Very good skyline for a city with 17.000 !
I the area were I live there are two "big" cities ( 20.000 & 30.000) and the tallest buildings there are only around 6 floors ! If they only had such skyscrapers !

I'll give it a 8/10 ! :okay:

Had to give it a 10. Its essentually an isolated outpost in Canada's North. It has 17,000 people, thus actually having a skyline is impressive. I don't think that there is another place as isolated or its size with a skyline to match it. Remember the closest major city by road is Edmonton and thats around 1000 miles or 1600 kms south of Yellowknife. So about Seattle to LA, in distance. However unlike the US westcoast where you have Many cities along the way there is essentually wilderness all the way with the largest centre being 250 miles or 400 kms north of Edmonton at 50,000 people.

Sorry, but I think it's incomprehensible that a skyline with about 5 really squat buildings gets better scores than Melbourne, Sao Paulo, and countless other incredible skylines. The fact that a city is small doesn't make its skyline any better. I'm sure it's a nice town to visit, but the skyline is nonexistent. 1/10.

Is there good shopping in Yellowknife?
In Yellowknife, there are a large number of stores offering an extensive selection of goods. In fact, Yellowknife has undergone a significant retail boom as a number of large, national chains have moved into town, including: Wal-Mart, Canadian Tire, SAAN, Shopper's Drug Mart, Extra Foods, Bata and Mark's Work Warehouse. These chains, combined with Yellowknife's more traditional specialty shops and boutiques, give Yellowknifers excellent shopping facilities, both in the downtown core and the Frame Lake suburb.

What about restaurants?
Yellowknife has recently become home to a number of nationally known restaurants and fast food chains, including Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Boston Pizza, A&W, Dairy Queen, Tim Hortons and Dominos. As well, there is a selection of local choices offering everything from gourmet dining to many international favourites. Delicious Northern delicacies such as musk ox, caribou and Arctic char are also available at many restaurants

Welcome

The Basic Facts

Yellowknife is situated on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, the fifth largest lake in North America and the ninth largest lake in the world.

Yellowknife is home to over 18,000 people. Interestingly, Yellowknife has almost half of the population of the entire Northwest Territories! Yellowknife boasts one of the fastest growing populations in Canada. It has twice been recognized by national surveys as one of the top ten places to live in Canada.

The recent discovery of diamonds north of Yellowknife rivals the early boom days of gold, earning Yellowknife the title…Diamond Capital of North America. In addition, Yellowknife is the business, political, transportation and communications center of the Northwest Territories.

A little bit of history

Yellowknife is a town built on a rich gold mining heritage. Yellowknife began in the 1930’s when gold was discovered. In fact, the city of Yellowknife is built on gold with mine tunnels burrowing deep beneath the city streets.

How YellowKnife got its name:

Despite it’s strong ties to gold, the name Yellowknife does not derive from gold but from copper. So how did Yellowknife get its name? It actually goes back much further than the 1930s. In 1770, when Samuel Hearne was exploring the Great Slave Lake area, he encountered a tribe of Aboriginal people who used copper-bladed, yellow-colored knives. Fur traders soon began to refer to these people as the Yellowknives, and the tribe’s home become known as Yellowknife.

It wasn’t until 1896 that gold was discovered but because of the inaccessibility of the land, the rush did not begin until the 1930s. Aviation opened the North and the city began to grow and expand its boundaries in the 1940s and 1950s.

Yellowknife became the capital in 1967 and was declared a city in 1970. In fact, it is actually the only ‘city’ in the Northwest Territories.

Home to the ‘Northern Lights’

Yellowknife is one of the best locations in the world for viewing the aurora borealis or northern lights. People come from all over the world to Yellowknife during the winter months to see the unique and beautiful northern lights.

You may wonder why these northern lights occur? Well, to put it simply, the aurora or northern lights result from forms of electromagnetic energy that are drawn to the earths’ poles, literally charging the atmosphere and causing it to glow.

Some fun facts

For those into fishing, lake trout have tipped the scales at over 70 lbs and Northern Pike at over 30 lbs.

Who says Yellowknife doesn’t have its share of celebrity ties? A piece of Hollywood can actually be found in Yellowknife. A small street in Old Town, Lois Lane, was named after Superman’s girlfriend played by Margot Kidder, who was born in Yellowknife. Also, Ragged Ass Road, which inspired Tom Cochrane’s album, is located in Yellowknife.

Yellowknife sits on the North shore of Great Slave Lake. The Mackenzie River, originating from this lake, drains into the Arctic Ocean. Together with its tributaries, it is the longest river in the world.

Yellowknife ranks #1 among all Canadian cities for summer sunshine. In June alone, there are over 375 hours of sunshine.

I'm amazed how could a city with 17,000 inhabitants build highrises like that. Probably because of those living in poorer parts build them. And I am happy to see new houses are building in those areas. (Yes, lots of beautiful houses are replacing those old one, but those poorer people cannot afford them)

I love these photos, especially those showing the lake and the skyline together. The rocks and trees are very beautiful. I'm suprised that no one has mentioned that Yellowknife looks just like Sudbury in that respect... the resemblance is almost uncanny.

I have a question for Yellowknifers... is it possible to have ship traffic come up the Mackenzie from the Arctic? I know it is a very large river, and is only crossed by ferries. From looking at maps, I've always wondered in Yellowknife had the potential to be a port. I've noticed too that a rail line terminates at Hay River across the lake... are goods delivered from Hay River?

algonquin:
i'm not sure if the mackenzie is suitable for heavy shipping but it is used by large barges to transport goods from the end of the railway at Hay River to communities along the river and further north in the arctic archipelago. However most goods to Yellowknife are delivered by truck, the highway into Yellowknife is finally all paved, the last 100km used to be pathetic. Within the next few years there will also be a bridge built across the Mackenzie at Fort Providence.

You don't cross any frozen lakes to get here, just the Mackenzie River by ice bridge in the winter and by ferry in the summer.

So, do they have fixed fiber lines to the rest of the major cities in Canada for tellecommunications or do you have to use sattelite. Also, electricity, are you connected to the national grid or is Yellowknife on an independent one?

Sorry, but I think it's incomprehensible that a skyline with about 5 really squat buildings gets better scores than Melbourne, Sao Paulo, and countless other incredible skylines. The fact that a city is small doesn't make its skyline any better. I'm sure it's a nice town to visit, but the skyline is nonexistent. 1/10.

Please, this place is doing well here because it looks truely awsome, size is just a side issue. your a tool.

I'm not positive about the fixed fiber lines, I think we do, but we are definitely not connected to the national electricity grid. Our power mostly comes from a dam on the Slave River about 100km or so north of the city, and there is also a diesel generator in the city limits.

Its all personal preferance, so what is not impressive to you is also a personal veiw. so your vote is counted, but so are all other votes on this form and looks like to me many more aggree that its a very nice skyline snow and all. allso nothing in any of your cities can compare to the northern lights that they get each night practicly so there.:baeh3:

The population is slowly but steadily getting closer to 20,000. The last highrise built was a 15 story apartment tower overlooking the lake, about 5 or 6 years ago. The latest major development was a 4 story Federal government office building downtown that looks great, sorry I can't find a picture of it right now. There have been less major construction projects this year than the past few, however there was a story in the paper a few weeks ago about a planned hotel and conference centre the Yellowknives Dene people want to build right on the shore of Great Slave Lake, but it's not known when construction will start.

I'm not really into this whole rating deal... I must ask - what's with all these high numbers. I see at least a half-dozen randomly placed stubbies. Not really pretty ones I might add (No offence to Yellowknife). Might as well remove those buildings. The skyline would improve, yes? Maybe I could hammer together a tool shed and take a photo as the sun sets. I could put it up against the likes of Hong Kong and New York. Probably get a similar rating.

Well the rating system is a bit flawed for sure as it's rather subjective. Some people will inevitably not take context into account when considering a skyline and therefore compare cities of 20k to cities of 10 million (and vote accordingly) while others take the more realistic approach and factor in the size of the city relative to the size of the skyline (afterall, not every city can be 10 mil). That is why Yellowknife has a number of higher votes. Those who take more into account than what is just put in front of their face tend to give higher votes because they realize that this is a remote town on the edge of the earth and yet for 20k people they've managed to put up a skyline that could put cities 10 times their size down south to shame.

Interesting place and one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. The Northwest Territory, of which Yellowknife is the capital, posted per capita income in 2006 of $97,923 Canadian or $99,881 in US dollars. Astounding! I believe it has the highest income levels of any jurisdiction in the Americas.

The diamond industry has boosted income levels from already lofty levels.

What's up, my hometown!!! lollll!

We are the centre of all activities in Northern Canada, we have the busiest airport in northern Canada. Our buildings are starting to age so that's why the city is planning to maintain them, but we're prepared for the future because climate change might make us a boomtown.

I enjoy living here anyway! I like ice fogs and auroras, and summer temperatures BTW reaches beyond 30c. Our winter temperatures are usually around -42c to -51c. Despte those temperatures, it is good to live here because we might have a potential to become the hub of the north somtime in the future.

Thank you. And we are in the Northwest Territories. so it means that we are the combination of north and west, which is true because of the energy sector in our territory, and large-scale proposals in our territory.

Massive projects throughout the territory::banana:
1. Deh Cho Bridge - This will LINK Yellowknife and the mines to Southern Canada. This will slash out ferry crossings, which is environmentally dangerous (spill of goods in the Mackenzie river).
2. Mackenzie Valley Pipeline - This will pick natural gas from the Mackenzie Delta, and from the Sverdrup Basin in Nunavut by 2030. The largest facility will be in Inuvik, the largest Canadian community north of the Arctic circle.
3. Mines (Diamonds, Gold, Uranium, etc.)- this is a thing of the past, and still going on.
4. Mackenzie Valley Highway - plans are going on for an EXTENSION of the highway north of Wrigley, which is the current terminus of the highway.
5. Hydropower in Mackenzie River - this will use RUN-OF-RIVER technology and it can produce much energy as James Bay and Churchill Falls (capacity of 12,000 MW). They will be built in various parts of the river.
6. Geothermal Power in Yellowknife- The abandoned Con Mine is under Phase 2 of feasibility study for Canada's first LARGE-SCALE geothermal power plant (it depends if BC finishes first). It will provide heating in the city of Yellowknife. It will also provide water heating, snow melting, soil worming, and GREENHOUSE HEATING.
7. Devolution - the NWT is planning to be the first "HAVE" territory. Devolution in Yukon is done, in NWT, it's almost complete, in Nunavut, it's starting.

Deh Cho Bridge? What body of water would it cross. Surely not the Great Slave Lake. I'd love to find out more. I'd also like to know how much further north the Mackenzie Valley Highway might go.

Canada has ignored the northern two-thirds of the nation for far too long. The south and the north need to be better integrated. It's fantastic that these projects are in the works. The new Pacific port in northern BC and a proposal to link Canada to Russia over the pole with a new shipping lane could radically change the way we view our nation. With the north rapidly warming, there is great optimism that NWT, Nunavut, and Yukon will continue to prosper and develop. It's an exciting time for your region and for Canada.

The Deh Cho Bridge will cross the Mackenzie River, near the Great Slave Lake (near the split between Highway 1 [Mackenzie Highway] and Highway 3 [Yellowknife Highway]).

For the Mackeznie Highway, it will go northwards from Wrigley to the Dempster Highway, with a side road to Deline (near Great Bear Lake). When the extension is completed, all communities in the NWT will be connected except for Lutselk'e (eastern part of Great Slave Lake and near to the future national park in 2012), Paulatuk (being at the extreme northeast of the territory), Sachs Harbour (located at Banks Island), and Ulukhaktok (located at Victoria Island).

They are more dense than Anchorage, believe it or not. it's because of Yknife's rocky terrain (located on the Canadian Shield) and permafrost. That's why Yknife gets almost the same number of buildings as Anchorage.

Don't worry. Yknife gets 30+C during summer. with humidex of around 40+C?. so no worries. but beware of tornadoes, even this north. lol

plus, coats and parkas are available anyway. so enjoy the auroras!

Inuvik, a town beside the Arctic Coast, gets 25+C, with humidex of 35+C.

I find it quite incredible that there are so many scores of 8/9 & 10 for this city. Regardless of its size, half a dozen 10 level boxes do not constitute a 10/10 skyline or even a 5/10 skyline.:bash:

There are no perfect cities so scores of 9 and above should only be reserved for places like NYC and HK. All it does show is how ridiculous these polls have become.

I would like to go fast forward and see what my city will look like in 50 years. imagine an arctic city taller than dubai, and denser than vancouver. lol.

in my dreams. lol

Nice collection of tallish buildings for a city that size, but it lacks a dense, built up core of lower buildings to prop up the skyline. It looks impressive from a distance though, so 7/10.

7.5/10, amazing size considering it's population and the location. Unique since there are few arctic cities like this in NA.

according to Wikipedia the official 2006 population is 18,600. But even so your absolutely right the city looks like it has a population far bigger than the actual number.
