The Rise - Golf Course and Resort
http://therise.ca/images/masterplan_Painting-01-lg.jpg

A great resort community is more than roads, homes, and amenities. It must evolve over time, creating a sense of place where the human spirit can thrive.

Ekistics, the architecture and land planning firm recently awarded the contract to design the 2010 Athlete's Village at Whistler, has built a community plan literally from the ground up, interweaving thoughtful development with natural trails, parks and conservation areas.

Throughout, the integrity of the land is maintained and enhanced, with a third of the 735-acre site conserved in a natural state, a third dedicated to the Fred Couples Signature Golf Course and a third developed.

Consider the village - situated on a natural plateau, it is designed to be no further than a ten-minute bike ride or walk from any homesite, making the community centre, brew pub, golf course, equestrian centre, shops and services part of daily life on The Rise.

William R. Bennet Bridge

The William R. Bennett Bridge, scheduled for completion in the summer of 2008, is the centerpiece of a revitalized road network in the Okanagan.

The five-lane structure will relieve congestion along Highway 97, ensuring the safe, efficient movement of people and goods through this growing corridor. It will play a pivotal role in growing the regional economy, particularly the Okanagan’s signature tourism industry.

The William R. Bennett Bridge replaces the current three-lane Okanagan Lake Bridge in Kelowna. This corridor is the most congested stretch of highway outside the Lower Mainland accommodating an average of 46,000 vehicles per day. By 2017, more than 69,000 vehicles are expected to use the new bridge each day.

Heres a map I made (with help from google ^_^) showing the proposed bypass of Vernon as well as the rise golf course's location.

I live right below where the Rise is being built, along Bella Vista Rd. and man, there is so much dust from all the blasting. Its CRAZY!

Heres a map I made showing Kelowna's COB. The green starts in 2006, the red is supposed to be built by 2020. Estimated cost for the first section (green) is $14 million.

I know there are a lot more things happening in Kelowna and around the valley, so please post everything that I've missed! There are also a few more projects happening in Vernon that I know of, but I can't seem to find any info on. This includes an airport expansion (were getting a terminal!), a new downtown library and museum, and a highway bypass for H-97 that will get rid of all the trucks that cruise right through the downtown core.

^^ For that Kelowna bypass what type of road will it be?, 4 lane freeway, or just a new 4 lane road.

That bypass is a great idea, it will take a lot of pressure off Harvey Ave.

4 lane road.

From Kelowna City Council website:

Running along the existing Clement Avenue from Ellis Street to Gordon Drive, Clement Avenue will be upgraded at intersections and along the frontage of new development.

Between Gordon Drive and Spall Road, the existing High Road alignment will be used in some locations. A new section of roadway will need to be constructed to tie in directly to the Clement/Gordon intersection, and to run along the north side of the railroad tracks. The new four-lane roadway would travel underneath the bridge on Bernard Avenue near the Apple Bowl before intersecting with Spall Road. (Estimated cost: $14.4 million; construction: 2006)

I wish it was more of a bridge and less of a causeway.

^ I think we'll be seeing a new Okanagan Lake Bridge 10-20 years after this one is built. 5 lanes is pathetic.....it's almost like the ministry isn't expecting the region to grow. What we need is a Tacoma Narrows!

^^ Agreed!

Building a whole new bridge and ripping out the old one just to add 2 more lanes is ridiculous.

They could at least build a major 6 lane highway that goes straight thru the city with a nice bridge, well not exactly straight thru city, houses and business are in the way. That should handle the growth in the lake-side metro area.

:)

Let's hope they don't cheap out and build the first version of it.

... as the engineer says to his boss ... look, that was just a large scale model built for wind testing ... see, like I thought ... we have to build it stronger.

I'm wondering if rapid transit (rapid bus, not rail) is viable in the Okanagan? Does anyone think so?

oceanmdx
July 5th, 2005, 01:06 AM
Perhaps... from the airport to other points.

No way. kelowna is the ephetimy of urban sprawl. I think it is probably the most American of Canadian cities in regards to urban planning. It has a near non-existent downtown and everyone just goes to malls.
That said, I must say that loft building is a very handsome peice of archetecture.

Well, the airport certainly is a major transportation node for the region and Kelowna has the heaviest traffic - for its size - of any city in NA that I have ever seen. It has other important destinations like the area/cultural district, downtown, Westside.

The only mall that I saw was Orchard Mall. What are the other malls in Kelowna?

Well we are on the topic of transportation does anyone have pictures or info on the Kelowna Airport! I have not been to Kelowna since 1987 during the reggata ( No I did not cause trouble I was on the westbank side!) I know the Airport is a major hub and also a international airport

The only cities in BC that can use rapid transit are Vancouver and Victoria which has a LRT plan but no action.
