Transport trade urged to stay calm
Monday, July 4, 2005
Government Press Release
In response to the petition staged by representatives of transport trade today (July 4), a spokesman for the Environment, Transport and Works Bureau urged the trade to stay calm and avoid causing inconvenience to the public.
The spokesman said, "It has been our aim to enhance road safety. Taking a multi-pronged strategy is the best way to achieve our objective of protecting the pedestrians, drivers and passengers."
"The government will move a motion at the Legislative Council meeting this Wednesday for raising the penalties for red light jumping. We have listened to the views of the trade and understand their concern. That is why we have arranged to seek the Finance Committee's funding approval of $50 million on Friday for the procurement of 68 red light cameras and installation of 20 camera housings.
"Upon approval of the funding, the installation works will be carried out at full steam. A total of 96 red light cameras and 131 red light camera housings will be installed at red light jumping blackspots when the works are completed.
"In addition, we have begun to install overhead traffic lights at 40 wider junctions. The Government will also allocate additional resources to enhance publicity and education and to conduct a detailed study to examine the suggestions on the installation of vehicular countdown devices and flashing green systems," the spokesman said.
