CityZen May 8th, 2005, 11:16 PM Rhodos seems fascinating! After I've seen Paros, Mikonos and Santorini I've been fascinated and thinking to turn back. Next time can be Rhodos or Creta. Probably prefer Rhodos thus it's smaller and gives a better atmosphere of an island.

KONSTANTINOUPOLIS May 9th, 2005, 12:55 AM Rhodes plans to rebuild Colossus
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40826000/jpg/_40826537_drawing203index.jpg
Local authorities on the Greek island of Rhodes are planning to rebuild the Colossus of Rhodes - one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Faliraki municipality mayor Yannis Iatridis has offered land and planning permission to erect the 33-metre (108 feet) stature of the sun god Helios.
Greek-Cypriot sculptor Nikos Kotziamanis is leading the project.
The Colossus was built in the third century BC by Chares of Lindos but was later destroyed by a strong earthquake.
Luring tourists
Mr Kotziamanis has been preparing the project for several years, bringing together a committee of well-known European politicians and artists.
He had originally wanted to place the Colossus in its original location by the main harbour in Rhodes town, the BBC's Malcolm Brabant reports.
But the sculptor claims that dithering by the town's mayor has scuppered his plan.
Instead, the brass statue is set to be erected at the seaside resort of Faliraki, notorious as a magnet for unruly young Britons lured by its summer culture of round-the-clock drinking, promiscuity and brawling, our correspondent says.
Mayor Iatridis told a news conference last week he wanted to rid his municipality of its tawdry image and to generate much needed income.
It is estimated that visitors to the proposed Colossus and its adjacent cultural centre would yield £25m ($47m) a year in entrance fees alone.
Mr Kotziamanis and his backers want the statue to replicate the lure of the Statue of Liberty in New York harbour, our correspondent says.
The sculptor plans to make it hollow so that visitors can climb inside to reach the head, which will provide a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea.
Mr Kotziamanis is pledging to maintain historical accuracy and says - that like the original - his creation will be standing on a plinth.

Raleigh-NC July 5th, 2005, 03:33 PM Leafs, every visit to your threads is a treat :okay: Thanks for posting some Rhodes photos. Can't wait to see more ;)
LEAFS FANATIC July 5th, 2005, 03:49 PM Thanks george and Raleigh!
I leave in 4 days! My damn digital camera has been acting up when I use the flash setting and i have no time to fix it. However, daytime shots wont be a problem. I will post some when I return!
My itinerary is like this: Arrive in Athens this Saturday. Fly out to Zakynthos early Sunday morning. Stay there for 4 days. Come back to Athens. Spend 3-4 days there mainly swimming during the days and going out at nights. Then head north to Mount Parnassos to visit my grandparents in their summer home in a village very close to Levadia. Then, return to Athens and maybe go to one of the Saronic Gulf islands for a couple of days. return to Athens for 2 days and then come back to Toronto.
Christos7 July 5th, 2005, 05:11 PM Great pics Leafs!
Remember, take LOADS of photos when you go! ;)

Giorgio January 9th, 2006, 06:00 AM Wow great pics! Rhodes is vey elegant! I havnt been yet, im really jealous now lol. Is that you in one of the pics?
MidtownGuy January 9th, 2006, 06:20 AM yes, it is very elegant indeed. I recommend it to everyone because it is one of those islands that are great for all personalities and ages. the historic old town of Rhodes left me speechless. The lunch I had at a beach taverna in Lindos was the best I ever had. I can still taste the perfect saganaki.....
that is me in the picture at the gate into the old town.

This is the old Town map. You can see the entire town is encircled by this wall structure, and it is at one of the 7 or so entrance gates into the town that I am standing in the above pic. the knights' castle is a separate thing. the whole town within the walls is a UNESCO world heritage site, with people still living in houses from the Venetian days.
Giorgio January 9th, 2006, 06:40 AM Thanks for that. Since iv never been, I was curious as to were that setting was. Btw, Nice tan :okay:
MidtownGuy January 9th, 2006, 06:44 AM it was my third week there, so by this time my tan was deep. I still have some of it I think!
seriously, Giorgos you would love Rhodos.
Giorgio January 9th, 2006, 07:46 AM Whats the nightlife like? Ill definetly go there next time. Im currently planning to go to Mykonos, Santorini Rhodes and Zakynthos. I might do Kefalonia again (the Ionians have the best beaches by far). Ill do Crete also as I havnt been. Care to be my tour guide?
I hope all expenses are paid by my guide though :D
Alboboy11 January 10th, 2006, 04:59 AM i lived there in rhodes when i was young, from 4 to 6 i believe...
MidtownGuy January 10th, 2006, 05:58 AM The nightlife was very dynamic. There are numerous places along the harbor with live music, dancing and food. Many places in the old town as well for elegant evenings out. If you like more raucous places with loud dance music, hip hop, and pop, then there are many places in the new town, especially Orfanidoy street, where the bars and nighclubs are lined up literally one after another.
The fancy Casino in town had interesting international entertainment acts as well, like a Flamenco troupe when I was there.
You will not be bored at night, for sure.
Giorgio January 10th, 2006, 10:47 AM Yea im into clubbing. Wanted to make sure that theres clubs there :P
Did you go to any nightclubs or did you go on a more romantic holiday with a partner? :D If so, how do they compare with Ios and Mykonos?
MidtownGuy January 10th, 2006, 11:17 AM For most of my trip I was traveling alone. I would say there are clubs in Rhodes for most tastes, although I did not find one that was really large with house music like some in Mykonos. Also, in Mykonos I hardly ever heard Greek music, although of course there are places I'm sure, while in Rhodes there seemed to be more places with Greek music and dancing. Overall the club crowd in Mykonos and Ios is younger.
Except Orfanidy Street in Rhodes New Town, which is packed with young people drinking and hooking up.
Giorgio January 10th, 2006, 11:50 AM Sound nice!
Well yea I suppose I am kinda young so you know. lol. Im sure ill enjoy it.
I plan to travel to Greece alone too, I think it would be great being able to meet new people as I go along, maybe go on a tour. Ofcourse I would have to visit the relatives :( lol but I could always extend my plans!
Thanks for the info, I hope I havnt been annoying with my 100 questions.
MidtownGuy January 10th, 2006, 01:28 PM i actually love to share whatever I know about Greece !
gm2263 January 10th, 2006, 02:15 PM Just for your information, the Castle of Rhodes is the biggest one in the Mediterranean, even bigger than the one in Malta. As for the island, I daresay that it is a piece of Europe with lots of sunshine... I even believe that the picturesque old city is even prettier than Plaka and much more original...
Tekir January 11th, 2006, 06:13 AM Many people think, Templar Knights are the first knight order.
Infact it is wrong. The first order is the Hospitallers of St. John. Templars were just the first armed knight order.
Anyway, after losing the Holy Lands, the Latin dominated Hospitallers of St. John moved to Rhodes and this island became their stronghold.
Among Turkish people they were know as Saint John Knights. No word about Hospital was used.
Term Hospital also comes from these guys. Mainly Templars concentrated on baniing business while Hospitallers concentrated on hospitality and healthcare.
Rev January 11th, 2006, 06:25 AM This is another island Im definately going to visit.
For a Greek, Iv only ever been to a couple islands.
Lesvos, Spetses and the islands around it.

ps...hehe..i asked 3 questions instead of one... :)
MidtownGuy March 16th, 2006, 06:52 PM My camera is not so great, only 5 megapixels, so I think it must be the image hosting site- I use flickr.com, and it gives me a choice of sizes to link...
Rhodes is great for a 28 year old. The people, both Rhodians and tourists, are out until late in the night partying. There were many interesting places where young Greeks were hanging out.
The beaches were a nice mix of young and old. Failaraki is mostly tourists so I did not spend time there, I just drove through. Rhotes Town was brilliant with life and so was Lindos.
GrigorisSokratis April 19th, 2006, 09:16 PM It should be also great to have posted some pictures of modern Rhodes specially the Rhodos Palace Hotel a very nice touristic complex including a 20stories building.
gm2263 April 19th, 2006, 11:51 PM @ Grigoris and the rest of the gang
I had the opportunity to go to Rhodes in 2003 and took some pics from the city of Rhodes, especially the old part with the castle which I liked most.
Impressively, the area looks like Mediterranean Europe at its best and the Medieval castle is a jewel. However, for a Greek skyscrapers fan, this location is very special since it has the tallest building outside Athens, namely, the Rhodos Palace Hotel and convention centre, which, at a height of 20 storeys is a rather unusual spectacle for Greece.
Unfortunately, the hotel is located outside of the city in Ixia - Ialissos, at a distance that one needs a car to cover. However, due to the fact that the hotel is between the city and the airport, you cannot miss it easyly if you come by air. Also, the 12-storey Grecotel Rhodos Imperial and a number of 8-10 storey beasties are located in that area which, as one may imagine, obviously took its current shape during the years of the military dictatorship.
Now, let's be clear on this: Greece has some of the finest hotel in the world that do not need to be 10 or 15 storeys to be included in the guides for the "leading hotels in the world" for example, like the Elunda Beach hotel in Crete (like the Rhodos Palace probably) and many more.
One needs to see though an alternative form of tourist development for which, judging from the pics that you see below, Rhodes was chose to and walked its path for a while. We see a number of big-sized hotels all built many years ago, also renovated many times since then, but still, they didn't take any radical changes outside and by preserving their original designs, allow us to see a glimpse of the development visualised for Rhodes (and potentially for other tourist areas) in the early 1970's. Whether you like it it's up to you, I liked Rhodes in general because it is a green island with many things to see as well as many ways to have fun, including the "Bar Street" (Orfanidou is the name I think) where I paid a couple of late night visits and managed to crawl back to my hotel room afterwards.
Now, in the light of my incapacity to take pics, I bought three postcards depicting the area of Ialissos, which I scanned and here they are:

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Other%20Cities%20and%20Regions/Rhodes-Ialissoshighrises2-cpmpresse.jpg
This one I like most, it has a "Havaiian Tropic" touch in its colours. Is it Rhodes or Oahu?
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c94/gm2263/Other%20Cities%20and%20Regions/Rhodes-Ialissoshighrises3-compresse.jpg
NMBS1 April 20th, 2006, 01:56 AM Nice pics. But I must say I'm glad about the fact that tall hotels are not built on the coast and islands anymore, they look out of place and tourists do not look for such structures. The big cities on the mainland are the only places where tall building SHOULD be built. Unfortunately, the "ban" applies to them too...

neorion May 31st, 2006, 07:27 AM Simply one of Greece's best islands..Actually Mykonos, santorini and Rhodes are the most turistic islands right? touristic for sure, the best is subjective. For me it would be Syros, Spetses, Lesbos, Ithaki and others
Giorgio May 31st, 2006, 01:03 PM historic island with great natural and architectural significance, except some of those concrete monstrosities right on the beach
Sometimes they are good. I personally like beachside resorts of such a kind.
gm2263 May 31st, 2006, 01:55 PM I have been to Rhodes in 2002 and it as wonderful. Actually, I was wandering in the old city and the night clubs across Orphanidou street.
Few people actually know that Rhores has the tallest highrise outsode Athens, namely the 18-stprey Rhodos Palace Hotel, as well as an array of 8-12-storey complexes all situated in Ialissos, just outside the town of Rhodes on the road that leads to the airport.
Due to the fact that I didn't have transportation and I was also on vacation, I preferred not to go there. However, I bought three postcards that I scanned and posted elsewhere in this foru. I re-post them for you here, to also please the eyes of George, in case he hasn't seen them before. Needless to say that all these structures date back to the days of military Junda (1967-1974) or shortly after, following the usual pattern that we discussed in the history of Athenian skyscrapers as presented in the principal link in my signature:
A different aspect of Greece, partly Hawaiian looking, George may be remotely reminded of similar settings in Australia...
Laries and Gentlemen, the controversial Ixia - Ialissos area...

Sure at TOP 5 destinations of Greece. :D
Reaper-strain December 3rd, 2007, 07:14 PM I think it is quite mature of the Greeks to leave the symbols of Islam on top of the old mosque minarets in Rodos old town.
NickyF December 4th, 2007, 12:28 AM I think it is quite mature of the Greeks to leave the symbols of Islam on top of the old mosque minarets in Rodos old town.
When the old town of Rhodes was listed as a world heritage item by UNESCO several decades ago, one of the reasons used to justifiy its status was the fact that the old town contains evidence from every period of human habitation on the island ranging from the classical upto the Ottoman period.
Every building in the Old Town contributes to the overall appeal of the place.
Greece has come to terms with her past, too bad some of our neighbours haven't.

LOL, probably that's why one of your neighbour's name cannot be pronounced at one go.

You can rebuilt it in the harbour in 1:1 to attract more tourists like the statue of liberty in new york
pilotos December 4th, 2007, 07:27 PM That's indeed not a bad idea, not that Rhodes lack tourists, but it wouldn't be bad, though no one knows how did it looked, or where it was located exactly.

An archeological team of experts can locate the ancient harbour and the design and height of the statue to rebuilt it in 1:1.

The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes was built in th 14th century by the Knights of Rhodes (now officially known as the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta), who occupied Rhodes from 1309 to 1522. After the island was captured by the Ottoman Empire, the palace was used as a fortress. -wikipedia

In 164 BC, Rhodes signed a treaty with Rome, and became a major schooling center for Roman noble families, and was especially noted for its teachers of rhetoric, such as Hermagoras and the author of the Rhetorica ad Herennium. In the 1st century AD, the Emperor Tiberius spent a brief term of exile on Rhodes, and Saint Paul brought Christianity to the island. Rhodes reached her zenith in the third century, and was then by common consent the most civilized and beautiful city in Hellas. In 395, the long Byzantine Empire period began for Rhodes, when the Roman Empire was split and the eastern half gradually became a Greek empire. -wikipedia

The Italians ruled the island from 1912-48 and constructed many buildings in the Italian art deco or 'liberty' style, often drawing inspiration from gothic and moorish designs. They also restored many of the historic buildings, including the castle.

I agree with OMEYA.
Without a car or jeep, Rhodes cannot be fully enjoyed or explored properly. I was there for 6 days last summer and I thank God that I had the foresight to rent a car> Had I not done so, me and my friends would have been stranded in the island's city center every day and we would have missed out on its beauty, beaches, ruins, histiry, etc...

El_Greco January 12th, 2009, 03:16 AM Hey guys need some info about Rhodes - Ive been thinking about going there in the not too distant future so would like to ask hows situation with British tourists there?I mean I wouldnt want to go to a place which is full of drunken loud arseholes.
ovem January 12th, 2009, 08:36 AM then you sould not go to faliraki area. The city of Rhodes is free of those i think.
SouthernEuropean January 12th, 2009, 01:28 PM they're everywhere!,but hey they're not so bad :shifty:
ovem January 12th, 2009, 06:41 PM well they never bothered me :P i think the media goes too far...
mr impossible April 16th, 2009, 01:25 AM IF THIS IS IN THE WRONG SECTION CAN SOMEONE MOVE IT?!?!!
My favorite statue..... the statue of rhodes built between 292 and 280B.C!
That was more than 2000 years ago! It 32.6m tall and was about 107 feet tall. I mean it's kind of ironic that Greeks had one of the tallest structures 2000 years ago, but now it's known for being quite flat....... Anyways this was a truly massive and beautiful structure. But sadly it only lasted 56 years because of an earthquake. But an egyptian architect offered to rebuilt it but truly declined because they didn't want to make the Goddess Hera mad......:nuts::ohno:
If it standed to this day, it would truly be a household name....like the Eiffel tower or maybe the big Ben.....
Anyway here are some paintings of how it looked like.

ReiAyanami April 16th, 2009, 12:44 PM Ok.....:shifty:
Billy8181 April 16th, 2009, 04:34 PM if it standed today it would be ok just because it's old....if it was new it would be ridiculed by the local architects.
god forbid we make another one of its kind.:ohno:
skyduster April 16th, 2009, 06:03 PM ^^ If the statue was still around today, it would be more than just "ok". It would be a major tourist attraction, archaeological site, and iconic monument. But such tall, free-standing structure, built with ancient engineering, had almost no chances of surviving millenia of earthquakes.
If there were modern-day plans to rebuild it, many people would oppose it (including myself), and rightfully so.
Billy8181 April 16th, 2009, 08:14 PM i've always wondered on the logic of that....is it the height? the fact that it is out of fashion?
how can france get away with the eiffel tower but we get the luxury of rejecting the colossus of rhodes is beyond me.....
i guess rollercoaster would be out of the question too...? :S
Grk101 April 16th, 2009, 08:22 PM Wasn't there a thread on here not so long ago about plans to rebuild a replica that would double as a light show?
Grk101 April 16th, 2009, 08:27 PM I can't find the thread, but here is an article about the rebuild plans from November 2008:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2008/nov/17/colossus-rhodes-greece-sculpture
Billy8181 April 16th, 2009, 08:29 PM yeah, i remember this......but cant remember what happened, although I can probably imagine..
BG_PATRIOT April 17th, 2009, 07:49 AM I personally think it would be silly to rebuilt it...the idea and perception that each and everyone of us has of the Colossus is much more majestic than having a copy of it. I prefer to see it in the way I believe it looked like, rather than having a new one stand up there. Truly, if the Greek government and/or donors for the project get the funds to build it...I would rather them spend it on excavating the several thousands of sites in Greece or even reconstructing some other ruins before building a new Colossus
Billy8181 April 17th, 2009, 12:15 PM fair enough, the problem is that anything LIKE the colossus is not allowed either......
skyduster July 25th, 2009, 07:15 AM i've always wondered on the logic of that....is it the height? the fact that it is out of fashion?

Well, the Eiffel Tower is not a recreation of a lost ancient monument. It's an original structure that reflects the time period it was built in (1880s).
Rebuilding the Colossus of Rhodes today is one of those tourism pipe dreams that is doomed to become a white elephant. Thankfully, I'm not aware of any mainstream campaign to build it.
You may remember a similar -but far worse- project some years ago by some Greek-Americans to deface a forested mountain in Makedonía and carve a huge sculpture of Alexander the Great's face on the side of the mountain; supposedly, many centuries ago, Alexander the Great wanted his bust carved out of that mountain. Aside from the fact that this would have been a monstrosity that would have defaced the beautiful Greek countryside, caused environmental problems, threatened nearby medieval monuments, and even possibly start an "Alexander war" with our neighbors, it would have been such a boondoggle. The only people in Greece that supported this idea were the residents of a nearby village who were convinced it would bring tourism. Thankfully, neither did the wider Greek public take this project seriously, nor did the Greek State support and approve it, and the project is now forgotten.
Of course, there are two key differences between these two projects. Firstly, the Colossus would be built in an urban area (the old port of Rhodes City), hence no immediate impact on the environment, as opposed to the Alexander carving which would be carved out of precious forest. And secondly, Rhodes is already a major tourist destination, as opposed to that small village in Makedonía. However, I don't see the Colossus having any economic benefit; Rhodes would not attract a significant amount of additional tourists, interested in seeing a modern reacreation of a lost ancient monument. The only reason for this project would be purely nostalgic, and it wouldn't aesthetically improve Rhodes City, IMO. It would be a waste of money; the money of these hypothetical donors would be more useful in other cultural and architectural projects.

Ares_K August 11th, 2009, 10:49 AM The permanent collection of the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, consists mainly of findings of excavations performed during the Italian occupation, in Rhodes and the other Dodecanese islands. Mycenaean jewelry, pottery and funerary items from sets of Ialyssos and Kamiro from the Geometric to the Classical period (9th-4th century BC), sculptures of Classical and Hellenistic period and Hellenistic Rhodian coins are the main exhibits of the museum. The exhibition aims to highlight the major findings from the island to assist in the understanding of history of the place.

The Archaeological Museum is housed in the medieval building of the large hospital of the Knights. Building started in 1440 by Grand Master de Lastic (de Lastik), with money left to him by his predecessor Fluvian (Flouvianos), but ended 49 years later, by Master D 'Aubusson. It is a Gothic building with Renaissance elements. The building includes an internal courtyard which is framed by two-storey gallery.
The courtyard, opposite the entrance, is dominated by a sitting lion with a bull's head at his feet from the later Hellenistic era, and in front of it you can see a mosaic floor from the Early Christian basilica of Arkasa in Karpathos.

A second mosaic, also from Karpathos Arkasa is placed in the internal courtyard in front of the stores of the Museum. In the great hall of patients one can see the tombstones of the Knights, various emblems of the knights and a Roman sarcophagus used as grave for the Grand Master Kornegian. In the dining room, embossed columns of Late Antiquity from Nisyros were fitted .

On the south side rooms of the gallery there are samples of Rodian sculpture from the Archaic to the Roman period. Two kouroi are the main exhibits of archaic hall, which originally served as the galley of the hospital. Below, the hall of Timaristas with the headstone of Kritous and Timaristas from the 5th century BC from Kamiro, and the column of Kalliarista from Rhodes in the 4th century BC. In the museum garden variuos sculptures are exhibited, such as the Nike statue from the Hellenistic period.

well, actually it couldn't be around 1910 since many of the buildings contructed under the italian governement are already there. Italian occupied the islands in the period 1912-1943.

ovem September 25th, 2010, 11:35 PM Πολύ ωραία ακούγονται. Γιά να δούμε. Απ' ότι ξέρω, είναι και μία ακόμη μαρίνα υπο κατασκευή στο Ρόδο. Ισχύει;

PAO13 July 2nd, 2011, 11:29 PM For most of my trip I was traveling alone. I would say there are clubs in Rhodes for most tastes, although I did not find one that was really large with house music like some in Mykonos.
Heres some pictures from the biggest club on the island, PARADISO. It takes 4500 people.

Urbanista1 August 11th, 2011, 10:13 PM Hey fellow Rhodians and Rhodophiles, just got back from a wonderful trip to Rhodes...great people, scenery, water and food...I adore Greece but especially the islands. Just wanted to share a few of my pics for your enjoyment. BTW, if anyone knows the people at the Gondola Restaurant in Falliraki, please say Hi to them from the two Canadian guys...because of a mix up in our schedule, we couldn't say bye to them. They have the best food in town.
These are pics of Falliraki and Lindos (Heaven on Earth - Athena picked a great spot)

username unnecessary May 10th, 2012, 10:31 PM
