Hi,

Soz if it's been done before, but why the sloped roofs on many of Manchesters new buildings? - Urbis, No.1 Deansgate, The Edge (2 (3?) buildings), The new one on Peter St (Great Northern Tower?), one of the designs I've seen for Spinningfields (No1. Hardman? Maybe not approved?). Not sure if there are any more.

Anyway, there does seem to be a few and I don't see any new buildings in any other cities appearing in this style (I'm prepared to be shot down in flames here as someone lists another 3000000 building with sloping roofs).

Pete

Its becoming a kind of trademark for new buildings in Manchester. The current designs for 1 Hardman Sqaure no longer have a sloped roof unfortunately.

Def a manchester style that and not just confined to one developer, multi coloured glass cladding also appears to be a bit of a trade mark.

Maybe someone can clarify this a bit but with such similar styles being adhered to by different developers is it possible that MCC set out some kind of architectual guidlines for the new developments? I heard something about the council getting envolved in the developments around pic basin.

Peter: It's perhaps something of an architectural fashion. But it is a genuine way to get away from the "boring box" shape, and you can give some apartments a sun terrace. There are quite a few slopey-roofed buildings on the way, at least two or three in Liverpool, such as the Alexandra Tower. See thread.
