Athens is characterised by extremely interesting architectural structures ranging from neoclassical style to post war style, from the modern through to the contemporary. These styles are placed side by side, but sometimes are mixed together. Athens is an amazing, unique and vary exciting european capital!

Yes, there are many plants and bushes that don't need much water at all, and so we can create a pleasing green city without spending much money! I love vertical landscape.

Hello my friends (Greeks and non-Greeks!).

Although I was banned about a week ago for defending myself after being attacked, I have now returned. I do not want to dwell or get into this issue regarding my ban, but I will say this: I have been attacked many times on here and statements have been made regarding my background, race, religion, etc., and NOT ONCE have these people been banned, let alone warned! I feel this is unfair, unfortunate, and hypocritical. That is all I want to say.

Now for some more pics of Athens! Enjoy!

In 1821, the War of Independence began as the Greeks struggled against the Turks. Lord Byron and many other foreigners joined the cause. Lord Byron is honored with this statue in downtown Athens:

Leafy i was also banned for one week for insulting your mighty country so no you are not the only one who was banned.

The difference is, unlike you i took my lesson.

btw did you got permission to return to these forums from the mods? If not i believe they should also ban your new account here.

What's the point of banning people if they will return with new accounts and start troubles again?

Or, what about if you saved the pic, uploaded it at another site, would it work then? ;)

I like this one...

http://www.nyloo.com/ast/cov/At/AthensKotziaNatBank3_b.jpg

These are the new head offices of the National bank of Greece close to the Municipality square. The building has been designed by the renowned Italian Architect Mario Botta and is really a masterpiece since on it was built on an archaeolgical site which was left untouched and literally was encast in the building. You enter the building and you are walking on a glass floor which allows you to see the antiquities under. One of the few buildings of its kind in the world!!!

the historical buildings in athens rocks, this is for sure, but the scene behind the parliament(I guess, the building in the middle),is quite ugly, looks a bit unplanned to me...but unfortunately, every city on earth has similar problems...
thanks for sharing...

Christos7
December 24th, 2004, 04:40 AM
Unfortunately, it is very unplanned alex. Cheap, quick housing. This was due to large influxes of refugess into a small city that Athens use to be. These ugly apartments went up real fast, and soon dominated the scene. It wouldn't be so bad if they constructed red roofs like the typical "Mediterranean" look. From that level Athens looks horrible. From street level or high above it looks fine, but roof level it looks awful. It's unfortunate, but it's the way it is. As Athens spreads out more into the suburbs, you see better buildings, ALOT more green and a completely different city.

*These pics do take a bit longer than usual to download, please be patient because they are photos never seen before, nor can be found anywhere. There are about 30 or so pics (not real big in size), just give it time. It takes my computer around 1 minute to DL. They are really worth it...

Please read while DL is taking place:

First off, I would like to commend george_ts. These are his photos, and he has worked hard and done so much so people can experience our city.
Many things are said about it, but few get to experience what it relly has to offer. It is a place that has changed so much, a place that is now "a new".
Please enjoy these pictures. Make comments. It is time to show slowly parts of this city in the proper way. (more to come in time) Enjoy:

The hill is called Lycabettus Hill. The Parthenon is not located on that hill but it is very close by (about 1-2 kilometers away). The Parthenon is built on the Acropolis. Here is pic. It is a view from the top of the Lycabettus Hill. If you look straight ahead, you see the Parthenon on top of the Acropolis:

Thank you, I have added the photos from some of the threads here to show the beauty of Athens and Santorini. In return I provided the Hot Greek Women part deux thread :)

Here is the link to the forum: Greek Turkish Forum (http://s9.invisionfree.com/Greece_Turkey/index.php?act=idx)

Its a site for Greeks and Turks to discuss politics/military/history/culture etc... It opened recently, but it is rapidly growing. You should sign up and check it out, as should other members interested in Greek-Turkish issues.

I knew this was going to be a treat, before I even clicked on the title :) You never fail to deliver a great thread, Leafs. I like how nicely old and new Athens blends. It always felt great to me, although Athens isn't really my cup of tea; it looks better now than it did 10-20 years ago. I just hope that people appreciate the hard hard that was done and continue to value the urban feel... minus traffic and all the other related headaches :)

Congrats for an EXCELLENT presentation of the traditional areas of the òld city. Athens has been subjected to a HUGE regeneration process with regards to its historical centre and what you see here is the end result.

By the way, guys (and this goes to Leafs fan too, whose pictorial contribution in this forum has been invaluable), I think you should at least name the area that each picture or group of pictures depicts. This way, the foreign visitors here or the Greeks that live abroad, will have the opportunity to learn something more about our country and its people.

In any case the pictures are EXCELLENT and thanks for sharing :):):):)

@ SEED: This is the elevated Maroussi metro station (line 1, Green) after its reniovation.

@ Tekir: I hate to say it because I like you but this time you are sooooooo busted . True, this bridge may not be the epitome of what the concept of aesthetics stands for, but it is close to some beauties that can hardly go unnoticed since it is between the Olympic Sports Centre, the Irini Metro station, the "Ilida" residential complex which was used as the "Press Village" during last year's Olympic games.

I took the time to go there today for some pics and here are the news form this place which is literally on the crossroads of one of the most interesting spots of the new Athens...

Enjoy pictures from the spot that Tekir (love you buddy) chose to lagh about:

1. The ILIDA Village (http://www.lamdaolympiavillage.gr/en/uk_orama.htm#) (click in the link for more, it's worth your time), part of a whole new suburb that was used as the Press Village during last year's Olympic Games and now is fully refurbished so as to receive its new tenants (later this year, thus the works in progress stil visible), mainly individual owners of high financial calibre. Being in a position opposite to the Athens Olympic Stadium and served by one metro and one suburban rail line, encompassing the latest in bioclimatic building technology, ILIDA is a good place to live.

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22633/34966/419766/0/Ilida+Village+1+from+footbridge+near+OAKA.JPG

2. Now I want your attention: EXCUSIVE picture form ILIDA houses with the Atrina Center Tower (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=110581) in the background. From your only Greek highrise freak friend that has eyes and lenses to see what others don't see:

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22633/34966/419767/0/Press+Village+and+Atrina+Tower+from+footbridge+near+OAKA.JPG

3. The main Olympic Tennis Court (capacity 10,000) as seen from the bridge

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22633/34966/419768/0/Tennis+Court+from+footbridge+near+OAKA.JPG

4. The Olympic Stadium (Capacity 76,000) as seen seek-and-hide style behind other constructions in the gigantic Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA) estate

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22633/34966/419769/0/Olympic+Stadium+from+footbridge+near+OAKA.JPG

5. Zoom on some distant highrises in the northern suburbs again from your only Greek highrise freak friend that has eyes and lenses to see what others don't see :D: Those residentials are in Chlargos and Chalandri. But more in the upcoming thread on Athens Skyscrapers and Highrises due next week

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22633/34966/419770/0/Faraway+Residentials+from+footbridge+near+OAKA.JPG

6. The metro train coming from the Neratziotissa station, direction central Athens. In the background you see the 65,000 sq Metre shopping centre under construction by Lambda Development (Latsis Group), due for completion in fall 2005 :)

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22633/34966/419771/0/The+Metro+train+and+the+latsis+Shopping+Centre++from+footbridge

7. View of the arched promenade and the entrance of the OAKA from the side of the Kymis Avenue. They look like two mouths waiting to kiss each other. Beauty

http://briefcase.pathfinder.gr/download/gm22633/34966/419779/0/The+Agora+neighbourhood+from+footbridge+near+OAKA.JPG

So, ladies and gentlemen, that's it for today. Ahhh George if you had only stepped on that bridge... And please everybody: I don't want to hear anything bad about this bridge anymore. I mean, just think of the themes for pics it provided me... :D

And Tekir, I love you man  but.... this time you're so busted!!!!:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Although Ankara is not that bad... especially in the area of the Prime ministry towers and the Dikmen Valley Towers (http://www.emporis.com/en/il/im/?id=195173) (click to visit-highly recommended), it's not bad at all :D

These are wonderful pictures! And the Marousi station was changed for the better! Much much better! The cobled streets (although I didn't think was a good idea at the time) has been growing on me. Reminds me a little bit of Rome in that respect. The only thing I hate about Marousi is the traffic congestion.

BRAVO GEORGE!!

Awesome job file!!!

I am so proud and happy that those beautiful classical buildings have been cleaned up and repaired! 10-20 years ago most of these buildings were grey, drabby, and un-pleasant to the eye. Now they look incredible! Athens is full of these buildings and once they are all cleaned and restored, a new city will be born!

Great job George!

Ok, I will admit it: I am sometimes lazy. Last summer I was in Greece and I took over 500 pictures. To this date, I have only posted a few of them and they were Olympic Venues-related.

It is so time consuming and repetitive to post pics on the net! That is why I have so much respect fro George and gm who have posted so many of their wonderful pictures of Athens! :)

So, I took the initiative and I have posted some of my pics of Athens. Most of these were taken as my buddy and I were driving around Athens. Let me tell you: That in itself was a crazy experience! Anyway, I hope you enjoy these. I have provided explanations of each pic for those that don't recognize the areas.

Along the coastal avenue outside the old Athens International Airport:

Something that the vast majority of the non-Greek forumers may not know: The beaches all along the HUNDREDS of kilometres from Phaleron to the cape Sounion up to Raphina, Schinias, Porto Rafti, etc are amongst THE CLEANEST in the world.

...and wait for my thread about Athens skyscrapers. NEVER SEEN before. Truth is that I also have MANY, MANY ppictures of Athens that I will gradually show here. But all in due time. For the moment, let's admire these beautiful ones by our Greek Canadian (or better 100% Greek friend that he happens to live in Canada ). Nice work buddy !!!

gm2263

...and BTW about posting one's own pics: Yes, it is time-consuming especially if you want to reduce the size both in term,s of dimensions as well as compress them to reasonable size for uploading/ downloading, let alone some contrast, colour and rotation that they may need. That's why you don't see that many of my pics here/

However, one must understand that there ain't better way to expose something unless you go there ahd take a picture. I can tell you that most of yours are far better than the ones that I've seen in newspapers and the like. The problem is that for whetever reason, they get paid for that while we don't.

Again, leafy, nice pictures.

...and guys, please LET ME FINISH THIS ATHENS SKYSCRAPERS THREAD BEFORE THE SECOND COMING...

Still working hard for it... :wallbash:

The last three photos would have motivated ANYONE!!!! Dude, you kicked some serious butt this time, too :okay:

Well, not only the half-nude babes are worthy of positive remarks, but your entire collection of photos is golden. Surely, the parts of Athens you showed are worth a visit, at least to experience the urbanity of Athens. There is so much to show from that city that it will take forever to cover just 10% of it.

Can't wait for gm2263's skyscraper thread ;) Athens has a small, but decent collection of high-rises that if they were to be placed together they would make a nice-looking skyline. With all these earthquakes it is a bit risky to build very high, but who knows, someone may take the chance some day.

Christos, file,

I would say that 300 of those are from the islands of Santorini, Paros, and Ios. Since everyone sees so much of the Greek islands on this forum, I'll wait until another day to post them. The rest were of OAKA, the Olympics, Athens (which I posted), and my parent's village on Mount Parnassos.

I am glad you enjoyed the Athens ones!

Geia sou Grigori synonomate kai syn-stadiakia...

I will have to correct you here. Indeed the Panathenaic Stadium was built at the same site long before the Roman occupation. However, it used to be in a much simpler shape, similar to the stadium you see today in Olympia. Under the Romans the stadium took the shape and the form that you see in the modern reconsruction of 1896.

In any case, ancient Greek art continued to be totally inspired and executed by Greek artists and craftsmen during the Roman period -- with few changes due to technical innovations by the Romans (for the example the arch and the dome) and the change in patronage. So it is more accurate to describe the Stadium -- as any other work of Roman Greece -- as an ancient Greek work of the Roman era.

Ah, dear Leafs I owe you an apology.

You managed to find and post so many, many pictures of our beautiful country. My problem is though that in most of the cases I haven't been able to see them all, due to the fact that I have a slow connection at home, especially the ones in other posts when you had some 40+ pics in a row...

I will need to proceed in posting my "normal" pictures of Athens some time -no highrises, that is -I am thinking to buy an all-in-a-box ADSL connection by the end of the summer since posting pics in the internet has been one of my major hobbies during the last four years.

Anyway, very good collection pictures as usual. The pictures of the Olympic complex are actually awesome.

Now, some commentary on the "highrise" shots:

First of all, these pictures were taken from the roof garden of the President Hotel (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=110582) which is depicted in the following picture.

http://daurio.smugmug.com/photos/7572616-L.jpg

If you go to the 20th floor then, looking south, one may see the Athens Tower to the left and the Lycabettus Hill to the right.

http://daurio.smugmug.com/photos/8587541-L.jpg.

To the north, we have a look of the 24-storey Apollo tower which is the tallest residential tower in Greece. Also, towards the centre-right of the picture, we see the 17-storey Athens Expo Centre. The President Hotel is located on Kifissias Avenue, this 20-km arterial road connecting the north-Central Athens, district of Ampelokipi (where these particular pictures taken) with the suburbs of Psychikon, Chalandri, Maroussi and Kifissia where it the Avenue took its name.

http://daurio.smugmug.com/photos/8587544-L.jpg

Also, if you look at the above picture, the Athens Expo Centre, which is adjacent to the Kifissias and Katehaki Avenues, is the frontier between the "Old" Athens and the "new" city which, from this point onwards to the north, is characterised by much lower building density compared to the one in Ampelokipi (and in retrospection, they shouldn't be building 20+ storey towers in an already densely built area - even back in th3e 1960's and the 1970's - I mean, with a few more towers, the last picture could easily compare with Sao Paulo in terms of density... )

And, Tekir, the 3rd cemetery (as we know it) is some 1.5 km to the south of the picture that you comment on (see original post). If I am correct, this park is close to one of the best original English pubs in Athens, the famous "Crow's Nest", and the church in there is famous as one for performing the most successful exorcisms in Greece. Most useful for the ones having attended the full "Rockwave" Festival in Athens, as well as the additional peripheral rock concerts, including Moby, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and the one and only, Merilyn Manson...

Just for the record...

Again. Leafs, thanks for sharing these pics :)

Ok, we all know many parts of Athens are very crowded. The flat-roofed building look especially unappealing when viewed from the sky or from elevated places. However, I still contend that from a street-level view, even the crowded areas are nice. Had these buildings been built with red shingled roofs as opposed to flat concrete with antenas and solar heaters, the view of Athens would be much nicer when viewed from the sky.

What I have done here is to find certain pics of Athens from street level that show how much nicer things look from the ground as oppsed to the same buildings viewed aerially. Considering that Athens is a city of 5 million people, these areas are much more organized (and extremely clean!)than most congested areas in other parts of the world. Regardless of people's opinions, I love Athens. Yes it is crwoded and noisy but that is what is gives it life and character.

I like Athens so much and these pix are so beautiful!!Congrats leafs!I think that Athens has the same problem of Barcelona:both are amazing cities, but, from the air they appear like an enormous crowd, but in reality the buildings are restored and surely good looking! It's typical mediterranean!

From the air (roof level) Athens is horrible because of the lack of typical med looking roofs. The rest of Greece normally has this (except a few islands and certain architecture), but Athens does not. It's the only thing I really dislike about the city.

Leafs it is psychological.

Actually , the appearance from above depends on the sizes of gardens not the architecture. :D

I do not think, Paris and Athens, and Istanbul would look so much different if you look from above (central parts).

The thing is about the architectural issues. Now Istanbul and Athens had a fast growth so that most buildings are ugly. Now both of us started to renew the buildings. I think Athens will look from above same after some decades but from ground will look different.

As I'm sure all of u know by now, there r plenty of these views in Athens. Unfortunately, I don't see many of them changing in the near future. But as ugly as those tops look, I gotta say that Athens, in general, really does look very very nice. Like every big city, it has its bad views and its good views. Time to check out some good views... (in my opinion)...

1) Yes, the glow above the city that u see in the photos is real and u see it in real life like that.

2) Bright parts may seem brighter and dark parts may seem darker than they really are in real life because thats the way photos and eyes work. More or less, however, the general lighting in the photos looks like the real thing.

3) Sorry if they're not clear or tilted, but I didn't have much time to take them.

And, personally, my favorite photo from today:

http://www.duke.edu/~adk7/Others/388955331rcguva_ph.jpg

And for those who haven't been around Athens lately, my personal general opinion:
Everywhere i go, i see buildings being built, reconstructed, renewed, being painted, etc. Most of the buildings in really bad shape - those in view at least - are planned to be renewed (at least the ones that i've asked about). The tram is awesome - on time and fast every time ive used it so far. Metro brilliant, as usual. And, in general, the city really looks nice. Athens has more than its share of bad points, but i think its good points outweigh them by a big margin. The city has come a long way, but still has a long way to go; and i personally think its going in the right direction.

And, of course, let it not be forgotten that greece is not only athens... cheers...

Thanks to everybody for their praise. The pictures are mine; I took them last spring while on vacation in Greece. If you wanna see more, the home page for my collection is:

But be nice to my poor little server. :) I found skyscraper city by noticing the huge surge in activity caused by bunches of people looking at my pictures.
