yea thats actually a really good they they dont have any traffic. If the Chinese were as car dependent as the US there'd be a whole lot more air pollution. Too bad its not gonna be like that for long.
zergcerebrates January 20th, 2006, 04:40 AM The only thing IMPRESSIVE is the utter lack of traffic.
Thank goodness they aren't congested like those in Los Angeles. China isn't an automobile society like America but more like public transportation. Too bad in a few years it'll all change because China just became the world's no.2 car market after the US.
rzj2000 January 24th, 2006, 03:15 AM China to become second largest auto market
Satinet Claude, general manger of the French Citroen Automobile, said Saturday despite the fact that China's auto market in 2004 was not as good as it had been two years ago he still believed that China would become the second largest auto market in the long run.
Satinet said while releasing the company's annual report Citroen produced 78,000 cars in 2004 in cooperation with China whilst the production in 2003 was 104,000. The reason of the reduction was that the China auto market experienced sharp demand decrease after "blowout" in recent years. In addition, too many newcomers joined the competition, which led to fierce price cuts. To guarantee the value of its brand Citroen voluntarily limited its production.
Satinet said although China's auto market entered an adjustment period from the short-term point of view, in the long run, that is, in the foreseeable ten years, it would become the second largest auto market in the world. He believed after sometime China's auto market would complete restructuring and its growth would be steady and strong.
Citroen's official in charge of China affairs said to the reporter that those who felt most pressured in China's auto market in 2004 were foreign companies that entered China long ago. He said China's new regulations on auto industry would boost the healthy competition in the auto market. He was confident of the future of China's auto market.

I actually just returned from China a week or so ago, and have to say that traffic in Beijing is MUCH worse than Los Angeles. It actually had the worst traffic I've ever seen. Every highway around the city is stuck in virtual gridlock. It took us hours to go anywhere due to the stand-still traffic.
yea thats actually a really good they they dont have any traffic. If the Chinese were as car dependent as the US there'd be a whole lot more air pollution. Too bad its not gonna be like that for long.
Consequently, the traffic coupled with the heavy industry in the country makes for the worst air pollution I've ever seen. Its so smoggy that sunny days actually seem cloudy... this picture is actually a sunny day:
http://images.kodakgallery.com/servlet/Images/photos1431/3/82/86/21/71/4/471218682305_0_BG.jpg?a=1
I will say there is much less traffic on highways between cities, generally because these new highways are expensive to drive on, and there are transportation alternatives such as trains.
wigo January 26th, 2006, 04:23 PM WOOOhoo! global warming here we come!!
Apparently, US is far more the biggest threat in this regard.
zergcerebrates February 3rd, 2006, 02:39 AM It'll be cool if they built a freeway all the way to Hainan Island with a huge suspension bridge.
General Huo February 3rd, 2006, 05:52 AM China has 41,000 km expressways (access controlled, 4+ lanes) built by the end of 2005, which is close to half of USA's. It built 5000km new expressways in 2005, and it has been building around 5000km new expressways annually for at least 4, 5 years in a row now.

.
It's the same in Guangzhou. Looks like even with sophisticated subway system in place, there will still be huge traffic jams in the big cities due to the rise of the middle class wanting cars as social symbol, and inherant poor road design and planning.
But there's an easy solution: raise the price of gasoline in gas stations, or increase license fee or levy a tax when buying vehicles.

didu March 1st, 2006, 08:56 AM ^^ I don't want to be stuck in that kind of traffic.
Blackraven March 5th, 2006, 10:14 AM Yikes!!!
IMO, to avoid a situation(s) like that, China should persuade people to ride trains/mass transit.
Seriously, it looks as if the traffic there is worst than here in Manila and it's a real pain in the @$$ just to wait in minutes due to numerous delays & stuff.
I mean if the Philippines is already the #1 most traffic nation in the world, then what more with the above???
No one wants to spend eight hours just travelling in a car when your journey is 10 km. away.
In the case of China, mass transit/trains should be made as the driving force of their country's transportation (so that there would be lesser cars on the road and lesser pollution too.)

Do the highways in China look like this?
simontse1992 March 10th, 2006, 06:29 AM nice freeways, but not too impressive. China doesn't have as many cars as in the United states, so maybe in a few years or in a decade or so, it will be lot of cars in rural China. American freeways are busy, even in rural areas. I don't see many cars in rural area of China in the pictures. I-90 6 lane freeway over snoquailimie pass in Washington state gets average of 26,000 cars a day, one of the busiest mountain pass in the US.
But Hong Kong has the busiest road system in the world.
AMERICA IS NOT THE BEST !!

davidwei01 March 19th, 2006, 07:03 PM They dont have cars in China? the roads are completely empty.
Most highway pictures were taken when those roads were just completed. You can see all those expressways are pretty new. Expressways only started being built in China 10 years ago. That explains why they are empty. Actually some of inter-city highways are so crowded now that people have to choose alternate tranportation methods.
Jue March 19th, 2006, 07:51 PM Intercity driving is very expensive in China relative to other forms of transport; in the city, congestion often makes rail a faster alternative when available.
What amazes me is how China does not have any high-capacity motorways in urban areas. The widest I have seen is only 8 lanes, 4 on each side. Do they design these roads knowing well they will be dysfunctional within 15 years as car ownership grows?
It's a pity. In the States they are building 18-lane behemoths.

well, would the US still be building that if building 1 km of an additional lane would mean the relocation of 10,000 people? I don't see them building 18 lane highways in downtown LA.
The Chinese government would love to build wider roads, makes the traffic run faster and the officals look better, but where are they gonna put the people?
Also remember that that word public transportation in China is not the same as public transportation in the US. Bus routes in beijing runs from 1 to 979 (highest I've seen), and they are dirt cheap even by Chinese standards. I bet you've never seen a 24 bus convoy before...

Æsahættr March 21st, 2006, 04:05 AM Even with all the interchanges that are extremely complez there is still gridlocked?
Are the highways controlled-access?
miamicanes March 22nd, 2006, 05:40 AM Awesome roads! :banana2:
If Texas were a country, it would easily have the world's best roads, hands down, by every meaningful standard (size, capacity, design, and aesthetics)... but China wouldn't be far behind (the bridges are particularly nice). Florida's newest and most recently-rebuilt roads are pretty nice, too... but Florida's oldest roads (and particularly its oldest interchanges) utterly suck.
Freeways in the northeastern US are just plain ugly... stomach-turningly-ugly, in most cases. Even the new and newly-rebuilt ones. Some of the bridges I saw in New York looked like they had chunks literally falling off, bolts missing, four thousand layers of gray paint over rust and corrosion, and lots & lots of duct tape. (OK, I'm kidding about the duct tape. Maybe.)

24 bus convoy? In Beijing? Haven't seen that before, and I spend plenty of time in China. They only bus convoy that size I've seen was during the Hurricane Rita evacuation. What I meant was that Chinese highways should have had wider right-of-ways from when skyscrapers weren't built yet. It only takes 12m to add four lanes. Maybe the situation will improve once U/C underground lines are complete, since rail transit in Beijing currently sucks, and the city is very large for bus coverage. As for Shanghai highways, I have no pity. The city is several times denser than Beijing, and people shouldn't hesitate to take buses.
UD2 March 31st, 2006, 07:10 AM Shanghai and Beijing has around the same density.
as for wider intercity highways, certainly they should do that. But think about it from a political and economical point of view. The people doesn't think about future planning, if you build a 6 lane highways and while a 4 lane is more than enough, questions are going to be asked.
You can say future planning, others will say you're showing off.
but nevertheless, I get your point.

stevenli April 2nd, 2006, 04:58 AM here is some hints about China highway current and in the near future.
china national highway can be categoried into three groups: national express-way( >=100K/h, at least 4 lanes), Province highway(two to four lanes) and coutryside road(one or two lanes).
by the end of 2005, China has built 40,000 kilometer expressways( by comparison, U.S now owned 80,000 kilometers expressway), the second largest in the world. according to China's the 11 national plan, it will constructed another 40,000 kilometer expressway by 2010. by then , China will roughly finish its national expressway-frame plan, i.e, all cities >=200,000 will be connected by expressway. the size of China's final expressway, according to the country's plan, will reach to 120,000 kilometer by 2025.
by the end of 2005, China has built 1.3 million kilometers province highway.according to the country's 11 national plan, china will build another 1.5 million province highway by 2010, all sealed and 2-4 lanes.
China's countryside road(one lane or two lane, paved or unsealded) is about 2 million now. according to the country's plan, by 2010, all countryside road will be paved and sealed. chinese call it "road to every villages".

by 2005, China has built 40,000 kilometer express-way( by comparison, U.S has 70,000 kilometers), the second largest in the world. the third country is about 20,000(German/Canada)
China construct 4000-5000 kilometer express way each yr since the end of of last century( in fact, China built its first FORMAL expressway in 1992). according to the country's 11th national plan, it will build another 40,000 kilometer expressway by 2010.
China's utral goal of national-expressway -frame is about 120,000 kilometer by 2025.
note: there is a big difference between expressway and highway in China's term. expressway refers to totaly sealed motorway, speed>=100 k/h, at least 4 lanes)

The differences between Indians and the rest of the world is, Indian was and is living in a dream world!
watch it buddy. Don't egg on a flame war. This thread is about China, keep it Chinese.
sravan2569 April 4th, 2006, 02:59 AM Pics are scary. Even though china is developing it is still communist and in 5 more years India will be Number 1 economy in the World. Now it is in the fourth. India is a democray!!
Don't bring India into threads like this. They are discussing Chinese success, not China vs India.

Curry4Ever April 4th, 2006, 03:22 AM These roads are humungous. China seems to be building roads with a vengeance. At this rate it should soon catch up with the developed world. I hope the Chinese don't regret destroying nature to build these roads in the future.
Finally, great pictures and good luck to China atleast there is visible progress in readiness for the vehicles that will hit these roads. That will be when the worry begins........

jmancuso April 6th, 2006, 12:50 AM Awesome roads!
Maybe.)
there are a lot of shitty highways here in TX and the drive is boring pretty much throughout the state except for parts of west texas.
Jue April 7th, 2006, 05:16 AM there are a lot of shitty highways here in TX and the drive is boring pretty much throughout the state except for parts of west texas.
You do have to admit, those "shitty highways" are all in Austin, not Houston. Traffic, yes, but good highways. ;)
It's funny, in China taking a roadtrip costs as much in highway tolls as getting a cheap train ticket. I just pay a little more and get a bunk.
hkskyline April 7th, 2006, 06:23 AM China's fast expanding road to development
BEIJING, April 5, 2006 (AFP) - From not one mile of expressway 18 years ago, China now has the second most extensive network in the world behind only the United States, state media said Wednesday.
China had 41,000 kilometers (25,400 miles) of expressway at the end of last year, the China Daily said.
From 2001 to 2005, China added 24,000 kilometers and there are no plans to slow the pace of road construction, the newspaper cited government officials as saying.
"Our plan for the next five years is to maintain the same speed as in the previous five years," said Dai Dongchang, director of Transport Planning and Research Institute at the Ministry of Communications.
The ambitious construction schedule is of huge importance for China's future growth prospects as at least 60 percent of its economy is facilitated by road transport, the China Daily said.
"Although transportation is no longer a bottleneck for the economy, we still need to expand its role," Dai said.
After its completion in 2010, the Chinese expressway network will connect all provincial capitals and cities with at least half a million people, the newspaper said.
People in coastal provinces will be able to reach good roads within half an hour of travel from their homes, while the time span will be within one hour for central China and two hours for the less developed western regions.
Over the longer term, the plan is to increase the total length of expressways to at least 85,000 kilometers by 2020, or just short of the current US network of about 90,000 kilometers, the newspaper said.
During the period, about two trillion yuan (250 billion dollars) will be raised for road development from overseas and private investors.
The planned expressway network will also stretch to Hong Kong and Macao, and include the proposed Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. A feasibility study on a road link across the Taiwan Straits is also being conducted, the newspaper said.
At least three major expressways will be built to link China's major economic hubs such as the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta and the Bohai Sea Rim areas before 2020.

pflo777 May 16th, 2006, 03:25 PM what "car density" is the chinese government assuming for the future?
Those roads look great---but if you have the same number of "cars per capita" as is europe, those roads should not have 2 lanes in each direction, but 8....
or will there always be only a small percentage of chinese people having a car in the future?

我国高速公路总里程达4.1万公里——2010年总里程达到6.5万公里,国家高速公路网骨架将初步形成
http://www.moc.gov.cn/05news/0601/t20060117_29988.htm

BJSH May 30th, 2006, 05:27 AM the Hangzhou pics looks smogy so much.
gaoanyu June 3rd, 2006, 05:46 AM It's true that some inter city highways do not have much traffic, and reasons for that:
1. Apparently China still does not have many cars, but in 5 - 10 years time this point will be invalid;
2. Besides the highways, there are always cost-nothing so called 1st class country (not sure how to translate it more accurately) ways interconnecting towns and cities (this is the case in my hometown in the northeast province of Heilongjiang). So instead of paying like 50RMB (7 or 8 usd), a lot of people will drive on the country ways to save money. The country ways, a lot of them newly built as well, are very comfortable to drive on too. Of course you don't get much speed, but it's not that slow;
3. As said, to drive in highways, people need to pay a lot. For example, a train fare (fastest) from my town to the provincial capital only cost 25RMB, while going by a car would cost 50RMB toll + petrol, so a lot of use would actually prefer railways, it's safer and cheaper and not necessarily slower. Or at least some people would go on inter town coaches, which save them toll fees as well. All those being said, a lot of car owners in my town are quite rich, some of them would not care about the toll fee, so you still see some cars on the highways:D

I wouldn't be too surprised if they had this in Singapore due to lack of land spaces,
but in China, if this kinda thing impose any danger, I don't know why they would have this. Just go to somewhere else to build a new airport for the sake of people's safety!
Fortunately, they are indeed building a new hub in Beijing, so chances are that it getting safe to drive in Beijing:D

but it looks like they will finally start contruction
i guess everyone will accept the costs because not building it costs even more money.. the cities have all agreed and everyone is finally happy ( except the envirementalists who are thinking and plotting new evil scams to stop it
so dont be suprised when they suddenly find some precious little hamster thats unique to the world like they tend to do when trying to block contruction projects :P

sharpie20 July 13th, 2006, 01:48 AM These are really good looking roads, new and very good looking, but too bad almost nobody uses it. But when industry and business moves more inland, like towards the western areas thses high ways are going to become very congested, 2-3 lanes will not be able to support such a huge traffic load, and china will then have to make changes to these roads which will take as much money as building them, casuing huge money problems.

zergcerebrates July 13th, 2006, 02:17 AM The impressive thing is the utter lack of traffic.
Its actually a good thing, an automobile dependent society like the states isn't a good thing. I sit through an hour traffic each day to get to and from work. Most of the freeway pics you see are new therefore the lack of traffic is understandable and the car ownership rate isn't as high as those of USA. Also these are rural freeways, would you expect a freeway from LA to Las Vegas to be crowded during regular days? Of course not.
heres your traffic pics:

gaoanyu July 13th, 2006, 04:26 PM Roads are built to boost local economy. When the economy is boosted, these roads will see more vehicles on them. It should NOT be the other way round, like you have more cars and then need to build more roads, because if towns and cities are less well connected, people have less chances to make money therefore less money to afford cars, and therefore no need to build roads, so you end up in a deadlock.
Also, China plans ahead, because the trend is more and more people are starting buying cars. E.g. in Beijing itself (15m residents) number of new cars registered PER DAY is around 1000. So you see how fast these roads are going to be filled up.
In China, a famous says is: if you want to be rich, you have to first build roads.
pflo777 July 21st, 2006, 11:17 AM when you look at the population density in the states and in china, theres no way, that china will be a automobile society like the USA. You would have to pave have of china with concrete. Imagine, in the US you have statistically about 1 car per citizen, so you would have to create roadspace(and parking space) for 1.4 bln cars on the long run......
You would have to make 20 lanes each direction heading into the big cities like shanghai or Chongquing.... that would never work.
IMO china will stay devided---into a small amount of people who will be able to afford and drive a car and a huge amount of people who will stay with the public transport...
Its good that china invests so much into the construction of bullet trains and so on, but to prevent the country from an entire traffic collapse, railways(and maglevs) will be the only solution....

bandie August 12th, 2006, 07:56 PM Good job on the infastructure China. I still say India and China should unite and give each other their experties. One has hard power. The other has soft power. They would be unstoppable.

this is where the raod will be build it has actually taken 40! years!!! of debating, because shitty left wing envirementalists kept making new demands ( there are like uhm a few tree's cows bird and maybe even bunny's )
but it looks like they will finally start contruction
i guess everyone will accept the costs because not building it costs even more money.. the cities have all agreed and everyone is finally happy ( except the envirementalists who are thinking and plotting new evil scams to stop it
so dont be suprised when they suddenly find some precious little hamster thats unique to the world like they tend to do when trying to block contruction projects :P
edit : when you look at the picture i live in the small area above A20 :)
this usually happens in Australia as well. Lots of SHIT greenies and NIMBY's having a sook when a freeway is proposed.

IDigFla85 August 15th, 2006, 08:23 PM Hey VVVV, wonderful selection of pics. One thing that I hope China can learn from the US is how important maintaining these beautiful highways as they are. They may look great for the first 10 years, but trust me, just look at the US interstate system to see what can happen if neglected. Here in Florida it is atrocious in some areas how neglected our highways are....most were built in the 60's and 70's, and now are really showing age. Most of our right of ways are not maintained as they should be anyways, with weeds and brush constantly in an overgrown state. I hope China will not make the same mistakes!

You're right about the US freeways, I didn't know it was bad in Florida too. In California the freeways are getting old and they've been patching up the entire S. California freeway this year but still a lot of work needs to be done. Theres huge pot holes after each rainstorm in LA and they're usually deep too.
China should follow the examples of Europe or Japan, especially Japan where their freeways are always so clean and maintained, just like new.

China are different from US for its much cheaper labor cost. I think the road maintenance it should not be a big problem. I heard many highways includin the Beijing airport highway is under maintenance currently.
