Fargo Wolf April 30th, 2011, 11:15 PM Number 640 is per Netherland roads.
This is for Chinese roads, close to 90.000 deaths:
http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/90001/90776/90882/6378731.html
Wow... I thought the death toll would be lower for the Netherlands.
DarkLoki April 30th, 2011, 11:26 PM It may be surprising those 640 deaths per year but in fact the roads of the Netherlands are the safest in the EU. You can never prevent all accidents, I am sure a large part of these deaths are the result of driver errors.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_deaths#Statistics_in_the_European_Union
mgk920 May 1st, 2011, 02:41 AM 640 deaths per year? That's impossible, that's almost 2 dead every day. Am I missing something?
Well, when you figure that the USA state of Wisconsin (population about 5.6M) had 563 fatalities in traffic crashes in 2010....
(source - http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/drivers/traffic/crash/fatality.htm - note that the numbers are trending downward)

superchan7 May 1st, 2011, 07:01 PM Such a new expressway with tiny shoulders. I mean, in traffic jams drivers will abuse the shoulders all the time, but still.
I think Chinese traffic is getting a little better in the major cities. At large intersections you still see rampant wrong-way drivers, and lane discipline in general is still not quite there. One thing they seem to do better than southern California is using their turn signals.

Have you ever been to the Golden Gate bridge?
DanielFigFoz May 1st, 2011, 10:48 PM I doubt that the traffic will be going very fast, and I'm sure that they're screwed to the ground.
gramercy May 1st, 2011, 10:59 PM thats hardly the point, in case of an accident the individual rods will act like swords penetrating the vehicles

Thats an older highway , this is a new Highway. Newer Highways and Roads don't have any excuses not to have proper barrier.

Barrier can be added easily, just haul in the concrete modules and line them up. I agree that solid barriers are necessary to prevent cars from crashing into the oncoming traffic, even though the speed of cars on those city streets aren't fast at all.
skyridgeline May 4th, 2011, 04:33 AM Is the Chinese Govt working on improving Chinese Driving Habits and licenses?
Natural selection and more severe/strict prosecutions (for DUI for example).

hmmwv May 5th, 2011, 07:38 PM I remembered at least ten years ago it's more difficult to get a license in China than in the US. You have to be able to drive manual transmission and perform that turn and back into garage test. It's all changed now and everybody is driving.

This made me think: how many km of elevated expressways are there in Shanghai?
CNGL June 3rd, 2011, 04:06 PM I like the G7 plans... It appears that now instead of joining G6 just after enter Hebei it continues to Datong in Shanxi province. Then I don't know the routing... Maybe it will go to Hohhot for join G6.
But the interesting part is the one from Bayannur to Hami. They will build a motorway through the middle of nothing! Only the towns of Ejinaqi and Mazongshan are in the route. I think there will be sections of 100+ km without any exit.
poshbakerloo June 3rd, 2011, 04:10 PM thats hardly the point, in case of an accident the individual rods will act like swords penetrating the vehicles
barriers like that are used in the UK aswell. None on full size motorways but just larger urban boulevards instead. The cars don't get over 30-40Mph anyway on roads like that...

ChrisZwolle June 3rd, 2011, 04:16 PM This made me think: how many km of elevated expressways are there in Shanghai?
Quite a bit. There are numbered expressways around Shanghai, two ring roads and a number of elevated roads;
* South-North Elevated Road: 22 km
* Yan'An Elevated Road: 14 km
* Yixian Elevated Road: 10 km
* Humin Elevated Road: 8 km
* Huaxia Elevated Road: 14 km
Besides these, portions of the Middle and Inner Ring Roads are also elevated.

ChrisZwolle June 5th, 2011, 01:58 PM Google translate says the weight limit for this particular bridges was 15 tonnes. That seems extremely low for a multi-lane highway, but it looks like the truck was loaded with steel, hence the total weight was likely above 40 tonnes.

There's not a lot of rebar in that concrete, either.
:ohno:
And I don't know when the last 'under traffic' bridge collapse was in the USA, likely when the I-35W Mississippi River bridge in Minneapolis failed a few years ago. Weak bridges are usually closed by authorities before that happens.
Mike
fragel June 5th, 2011, 05:18 PM ^^not just 40 tons. total weight of the truck is 88.92 tons. It carried 73 tons of steel. In such cases, bridge/road quality and design are meaningless.
overloading is a cancer. remember the collapse of the ramp in February? We'll be seeing such collapses if overloading is not stopped, no matter how they improve the road quality.
Pansori June 5th, 2011, 05:20 PM How old was that bridge? 15 tonnes doesn't sound like anything that would be built these days.

I'm fairly certain construction methods and materials have improved since 1989 ;)
However you are right, many earlier infrastructure projects like this one will probably need rebuilt in the next 20 years.

Things have changed a lot in the 22 years since 1989.
Back then, China literally literally didn't have any trucks over 20tonnes, and no private cars either.

There aren't a lot of rebar probably because it's only designed to hold 15t of load. Also the fact that it was built in 1989 so bridge construction technology was not as advanced. However I don't believe people were as greedy and corrupt back then so shady constrcution practice was actually not as common as today. In this case, the bridge actually held for 22 years, and god knows how many overloaded trucks have passed over it, so it probably has exceeded its designed lifespan long time ago. Compare to some construction today I'd say it did surprisingly well.
Also measuring bridge strength by looking for rebars along is inadquate, in a lot of Chinese constructions the problem the root cause is shady contractors stretch the rebar before use to get the extra length while weakening it. It's something that visual inspection cannot detect, only can be done by crack open the girder.

maldini June 25th, 2011, 09:53 AM Yeah I've seen videos of the driving done in China they may have really impressive roads, but no way would I dare driving in that country. People cross the center line at will, completely ignoring traffic light, etc
Many European countries, like Italy, the traffic is way more chaotic.
Road_UK June 25th, 2011, 10:05 AM Many European countries, like Italy, the traffic is way more chaotic.
Italy is getting a little better now, as they combat speeding and dangerous driving. France used to be chaotic, but strict regulations enforcement turned France in to an old age pensioners paradise...

I see the Chinese Govt. didn't waste any time removing the pics.
There's LOADS of short cutting that goes on in this country thanks to the endemic corruption at all levels. The sad fact is, is that there's no way to independently confirm what, if anything, is being done to combat it, given that there is only State Media, which is fully controlled by the Govt.
Rather than build a completely new structure between the two bridges (which was done in Burnaby and Vancouver, Canada during construction of the HOV lanes for example), then adding a deck to join the pre-existing bridges, they just did the deck part.
ChrisZwolle June 30th, 2011, 02:45 PM The world's longest cross-sea bridge spanning Jiaozhou Bay of Qingdao City, Shandong Province, opened on Thursday.
The opening ceremony of the 36.48-km eight-lane Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge was held Thursday morning.
The bridge, connecting the urban district of the city to its Huangdao district, cost 14.8 billion yuan (2.3 billion U.S. dollars). Construction of the bridge began in May 2007.
The bridge will shorten the route between the two centers by 30 km, cutting travel time down from over 40 minutes to around 20 minutes, said Han Shouxin, deputy director of the city's traffic management committee.
Previously, the longest cross-sea bridge in the world was the 36-km-long Hangzhou Bay Cross-sea Bridge that connects the cities of Jiaxing and Ningbo in east China's Zhejiang Province.

derekf1974 July 17th, 2011, 09:19 PM China Tibet's first express highway — the Lhasa-Gongga airport-exclusive expressway — will be officially open to traffic in the coming days.
The construction of the Lhasa-Gongga airport-exclusive highway was officially launched on April 2009. Investments in the highway totaled more than 1.5 billion yuan.
The highway will curtail the time spent from downtown Lhasa to the Gongga airport from one hour to half an hour. There would be no tolls on the highway.

ChrisZwolle July 17th, 2011, 09:39 PM This expressway is at approximately 3600 meters above sea level. I suspect this may be the highest motorway-standard road in the world, though La Paz has a substandard motorway at 4000 m altitude.
CNGL July 18th, 2011, 10:19 AM And I believe they will build an expressway (As they call the motorways) that will climb up to 5130 meters above sea level! (At Tangula pass).
BTW, where is the transcription to latin alphabet?
Nima-Farid August 28th, 2011, 10:58 PM Highway = any (major) public road, usually one lane per direction.
Expressway = substandard freeway in Europe / United States, but a full freeway-standard road (see below) in Asia and eastern U.S.
Freeway = full freeway: 100 - 130 km/h, at least 2x2 lanes, median, shoulders, grade-separation.
Thus, freeway equals Asian expressways. (Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, etc)
So we can consider Iran being more European than Asian!
In Iran Freeways called Azadrah (Free Road) and are part of a seperate network and Expressways are called Bozorgrar (Great Road) which are part of national highway system and municipal roads

* I know, it's the Lianhuo expressway, Lianyungang-Horgos, Kazakhstan border.
ChrisZwolle October 28th, 2011, 11:52 AM I wonder what the traffic volumes are on G030 in Xinjiang. Apart from the Ürümqi region, it wouldn't surprise me if it's barely 1,000 vehicles per day. That area is extremely remote.
keber October 28th, 2011, 11:54 AM Actually I mean the same road, but there seems to be some confusion between Google Maps and Google Earth road data.
It's the closest China motorway from Europe (about 8000 km from Ljubljana) and looks like pretty spectacular, Chris, any plans for a video or two? :D
EDIT: funny, in Google maps I can plan trip to Chinese Border, but not over it - also not over Russian border. All other borders seems to be "passable".
ChrisZwolle October 28th, 2011, 12:05 PM If there weren't any bad roads, corrupt police officers or border controls, you could drive to China in about 9 - 10 days from Europe. Doesn't sound that far actually. It would be epic to do that some day.

Then try G7 when it gets built. It will run from Linhe-Bayan Mod (marked in Google Maps as Wuliji Sumu)-Ejina banner-Gongpoquan (At the very end of Gansu S216 road, some 80 km North of Mazongshan which appears in Google Maps)-G30 Southeast of Hami. It will run 1000 kilometers through nothing! (Well, almost nothing)
-Pino- October 29th, 2011, 02:07 PM If there weren't any bad roads, corrupt police officers or border controls, you could drive to China in about 9 - 10 days from Europe. Doesn't sound that far actually.
The part of Western China where they are building this road is about as close to Moscow as it is to Beijing and China's east coast. The Ürumqi area is the place on Earth that is most distant from any sea. Such is the vastness of China (and all in one time zone, mind you).
In terms of your epic journey, there are relatively straightforward railway connections from Western Europe to Moscow (1.5 days), then on to Almaty (4.5 days) and from Almaty to Ürumqi (2.5 days). So on the road, 9-10 days sounds about feasible provided that the roads are in a good state. Until Moscow is just about doable. Just how bad is the trip from Moscow to Almaty? Or would it be easier to take a more southerly approach via Kyiv and Volgograd?
ChrisZwolle October 29th, 2011, 02:32 PM There aren't a lot of good east-west routes in western Kazakhstan. I think an entrance into Kazakhstan in the north may be better, driving via Astana to Almaty and then into China.
ForteTwo October 29th, 2011, 02:50 PM Any idea when the G42 Hurong Expressway (Shanghai-Chengdu) will be completed? At some point I would like to travel it end to end, since it will be the longest existing 42 in the world at 1960 km (at least until Asian Highway 42 becomes "real," presumably awaiting the completion of G6 to Lhasa).
Fargo Wolf October 29th, 2011, 11:39 PM If there weren't any bad roads, corrupt police officers or border controls, you could drive to China in about 9 - 10 days from Europe. Doesn't sound that far actually. It would be epic to do that some day.
Govt. in general sadly Chris. :ohno: :( Otherwise, yeah, I think it would be a hoot to cruise some of those highways.
That said, Some of these routes, especially the last pics are pretty damn impressive. Pic #3 in Derekf1974's post looks a lot like the Park Bridge in Yoho Natl. Park, here in Canada.
I'm curious as to why these motorways are being built in such remote areas. The population levels don't seem to warrant them there. Connections to bordering countries? I can kinda see that, but still...
What is the driving standard, compared to other countries? Is it as chaotic as India, where most driving "rules" are either made up as you go along, or is it better than that.

I've got a feeling that strengthening central government control in remote areas is an important rationale. Western China is frontier country and making it accessible quickly also means that they can be controlled. And that it is slowly but surely converted to Han standards (large groups of Han have already been moved to the area).

It well depends on how you look at it. Living standards in China are rising and so are costs of manufacturing and other economic activities. Coastal regions (including such manufacturing powerhouses like Shenzhen) are under fast de-industrialization process. Some of those industries will probably move inland where costs are much cheaper. For that they will need good transport links to transport goods cheaply and efficiently. That perhaps sounds like a more logical reason rather than just being able to control it.
CNGL October 30th, 2011, 09:15 PM I've just found pics of an expressway that doesn't appear on Google Maps yet! It's the G45 in Hebei, from Beijing border to just South of Bazhou.
ChrisZwolle October 30th, 2011, 09:56 PM That's the Daguang Expressway. It will form a continuous link from Daqing to Guangzhou, but not all sections are completed yet (most notably in northern China).

That's freakin' 3500km! Totally badass.
ChrisZwolle October 30th, 2011, 10:19 PM There are a number of 3000+ km north-south links in eastern China. Most of them have numbers like G015, G025, G035, G045, G055, G065, etcetera. Much like the American Interstate numbering, or the Korean Expressway numbering, increases of 10 indicate long-distance routes, except for G001 - G009 which are radial roads from Beijing.
CNGL October 31st, 2011, 05:29 PM ^^ I believe they are numbered without the trailing zeroes, so it's only G3, G65, etc. Of course, there are exceptions: the Changsha ringroad is G0401, and the Hohhot one is G0601.
The beltway numbering is confusing me: They always end in 01, so there will be up to 8 G1501s! And two of them in Fujian province!

Well, the USA has multiple duplicate three-digit interstate route numbers (beltlines/ringroads and spurs) and they don't seem to be confusing. There are no duplications of those numbers within states, though.

hammersklavier November 1st, 2011, 02:30 AM Traditionally U.S. Interstate numbering was as follows:
5-95 (W-E, increasing in increments of 5): N-S highways
10-90 (S-N, likewise increasing): E-W highways
The following prefixes would be appended to the ruling road(s) of a given metro, normally in the same travel direction. I-95 thus gets plenty.
100s-400s prefixes: spur roads
600s prefix: beltways (ringroads and bypasses in EuroSpeak)
800s prefix: alternative routings (rare).
Even numbers are always E-W and odd N-S*. Interstates which don't conform to the base-5 grid do not go cross-country. Sometimes two distinct instances of the same bi-numbered Interstate occur, e.g. I-76 (turnpike routing from Philadelphia to Ohio + Rockies routing somewhere out in Colorado), but these are rare.

*With very occasional exceptions. I-476 in PA is a N-S routing from Philadelphia to Scranton.

Actually, odd first digits in three-digit interstate route numbers are for spurs and even first digits are for beltlines and alternate routes.

The new Guangyuan(广元)- Shaanxi (陕西)highway was opened in May, 2011. It is one of the most important expressways of Sichuan to the northern part of China.
I don't know how to upload pictures here, so I only put the links.

One reason may be that a curvy road blends in better with the landscape.

1. Pillars are better not to be in the riverbed
2. It is cheaper as such than having numerous tunnels and/or bridges over river
3. I believe there is probably a demanding geology of the surrounding hills, making slope tunnels very expensive.
3. And last, expressway is actually pretty straight:

(from March '10; follow dots of the pillars)
Chilio November 8th, 2011, 10:40 AM some motorway turns are also needed because of height difference, because the road can't be too steep.
keber November 8th, 2011, 02:22 PM True, but obliviously not in this case, if you look at alignment.
Interesting note is that according to very short Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guangyuan) surrounding district of Lizhou city (subcity?) Guangyuan has 460,000 people and only one junction to this new motorway (and not very big). Also interesting to note is that it looks like parallel two-laned road is access controled with toll stations and marked on GM as expressway (toll road). Other roads in vicinity are mostly dirt roads.

big-dog November 11th, 2011, 02:27 AM Is there any info on the total length of expressway network by the end of 2011? And how many km of new expressways are opening in 2011?
There's no specific info for that but by 2011-2015 China Transportation Planning, the expressway length for 2015 is targeted at 108,000km. So by average, the construction projection would be like this,
YEAR LENGTH
2010 74,000km (current length)
2011 80,800km
2012 87,600km
2013 94,400km
2014 101,200km
2015 108,000km
Hope it can keep this speed :)
Pansori November 11th, 2011, 07:32 PM Thanks, big-dog. 30 000+km of expressways in 5 years is a little insane if you ask me. It's good that China is not delaying with the expressway network though.
Chilio November 11th, 2011, 07:56 PM speaking for their billion+ population and enourmously large territory, these 30 000 km are so little. If you make the calculation km per capita or km per km2 of territory, you will see that it is probably less than the kilometers built in any European country.

You can't calculate it just by per capita. You need to consider residential density and area as well. But generally you are right. Considering China's size this is normal. On the other hand, some other developing countries (such as another large country in Asia which is supposedly developing fast as well) are not building or planning to build nearly as much new expressways or roads and struggle with inadequate systems.
ChrisZwolle November 11th, 2011, 08:18 PM I wonder where they want to construct another 30,000 kilometers. The network in the east is considerably completed, maybe rack up a few thousand kilometers in missing links, but 30,000 kilometers? The western half of China, such as Xinjiang, Tibet and Qinghai is extremely sparsely populated. The eastern half is already well-served by numerous expressways. They do have a large number of missing links, but not 30,000 kilometers.

BarbaricManchurian November 12th, 2011, 04:42 AM Tons of beltways, city bypasses and urban expressways are to be built in the near future. Many cities have none of these yet, and soon each city will be building its system, usually hundreds of kilometers each. Also, there's huge gaps in the network, especially in Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, and southwest China (Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan). Frankly, another 30k is nothing.

hmmwv January 1st, 2012, 08:33 AM 11,000 km of new expressway added in one year, that's one crazy year. If we only count the US Interstate system then China's equivalent National Trunk Highway System is already the longest in the world (85,000km vs ~76,000km). The original target for China was to hit 85,000km by 2020, well I guess they were being conservative.

Other options are Russia-Mongolia-China or Russia-China directly.
EDIT:
China:
9,700,000km2
1,337 millions of people
85,000km of motorways
1km of motorway for every 114 km2 of land.
1km of motorway for every 16k people.
Italy:
300,000km2
60 millions people
7000km of motorways
1km of motorway for every 43km2 of land
1km of motorway for every 9k people
So, Chinese motorway network is less huge than it seems.
hmmwv January 4th, 2012, 06:28 PM It appears a bit unrealistic to me if the 80 000 km value would include only national expressways. There are maybe 10 or 12 of them that exceed 3000 kilometers each.
If they mean expressway with G number, then it's possible because there are a lot of expressways built within a certain province that's part of the national highway system and administrated on a national level. The exclusion is mostly aimed at city ring roads and one off provincial projects that's not really connected to any national network, which is rare.

That's true, although a calculation like this is too simplistic. Area-wise, you need to mainly consider just eastern China, whereas population-wise you have to look at density (again, in the main populated areas).

staff January 11th, 2012, 11:55 AM So, Chinese motorway network is less huge than it seems.
It is exactly as huge as it seems. It's like saying that Russia's land area isn't as huge as it seems because the population density isn't as high as, for example, England or the Netherlands.
Considering China's small GDP per capita and the fact that the western half of the country is essentially uninhabitable, the motorway network is still pretty impressive.

Not exactly. Iran roads in the area near Turkmenistan is good since there is Mashhad there. Lots of tourists go there every year.

How easy is it to consume when you have no decent roads? China is doing the right thing: building infrastructure which will then serve for consumption, export and all other economic activities. You can't consume if you don't have necessary infrastructure to do that.

big-dog March 21st, 2012, 08:11 AM Shanxi to build 18 expressways
( www.chinadaily.com.cn )
Updated: 2012-03-12
Shanxi province plans to build 18 expressways by the end of 2012, according to the Transportation Department, so it will add 1,008 kilometers of expressways in all, with 10 fully operational, and eight in partial service.
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/m/shanxi/images/attachement/jpg/site1/20120314/0013729c033710ca524537.jpg
When the project is completed, the province will have 5,000 kilometers of highways in service, putting it among the top 10 of China’s provinces, in serviceable highways.

In recent years, Shanxi has been active in expressway construction, having built 43 since 2009.
The 10 that will open this year are: the Linfen north ring section of the Qixian-Linfen Expressway; the Linfen connection of the Beijing-Kunming and Qingdao-Lanzhou expressways; and the Taiyuan-Gujiao, Yuci-Qixian, Datong-Hunyuan, Hejin-Yuncheng, Taiyuan-Yangquan, Lingqiu-Shanyin, Xinzhou-Baode, and Gaoping-Lingchuan expressways, for a total of 577.4 kilometers.
The other eight in partial service are: the Linfen-Jixian Expressway, Yellow River Bridge approach to the Taiyuan-Jiaxian Expressway, the southwestern section of the Shuozhou Ring Rd, and the Tianzhen-Datong, Changzhi-Pingshun, Heshun-Yushe, Guangling-Hunyuan, and Yushe-Pingyao expressways, for a total of 430.6 kilometers.

China eyes building comprehensive transport network
(Xinhua)
08:41, March 22, 2012
BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Wednesday announced a plan to further improve nationwide transportation between now and 2015.
The State Council, China's cabinet, said ten massive transportation routes crisscrossing the country will take form by 2015, as well as a high-speed railway network and a state-level expressway network.
Railways will reach all bulk commodity distribution centers and cities with a population of more than 200,000 by 2015, according to a statement released after a regular meeting of the State Council.
Meanwhile, roads will extend to nearly all towns and large villages in rural regions, the statement said.
Authorities also plan to expand shipping services to all corners of the world and construct 42 comprehensive traffic hubs across the country by 2015, the statement said.
The statement said China will stress safety, quality and good planning in its drive to build a comprehensive transportation network.
Private investors will be encouraged to invest in the construction of transportation infrastructure and facilities, the statement said.

General Huo March 23rd, 2012, 04:53 AM China is going to have world's largest expressway and highway system. She will surpass USA in expressway in about 5 years, if not short. Unlike USA's flat terrain, China has much more alpine tough terrain. So there are many more ultra-long tunnels, or super-high bridges (see world's highest bridge list (http://highestbridges.com/wiki/index.php?title=List_of_500_Highest_International_Bridges)), or clusters of tunnels and bridges.
There are so many ultra-long tunnels in China that many people, including most of Chinese don't even know them. Here is a list of Chinese Ultra-Long Expressway and Highway Tunnels that completed or under-constructed in 2008 in Chinese
http://www.highwaytunnel.cn/Books/gonggaolan/nation-longest-tunnel.pdf

arriaca March 23rd, 2012, 04:19 PM ^^ sorry i don't have further information about this road but here's a large version (http://huahjl.com/uploadfiles/201051894344.jpg) (9.3mb) of the picture showing more details.
Thanks !!

Suburbanist March 24th, 2012, 02:19 PM There is already a thread for Chinese expressways and I don't think a second one is warranted, but that is up to the mods...
Suburbanist March 24th, 2012, 02:21 PM . Unlike USA's flat terrain, China has much more alpine tough terrain.
Blatant wrong statement about US terrain... 1/3 of the Lower 48 are freaking mountains like the Rockies and the Appalachians... And we're just starting with the two major ridges.... Half of Alaska is mountainous. So is California.
That most American cities are on plain areas says nothing about what is between them.
Coccodrillo March 24th, 2012, 07:30 PM Interesting informations, thank you General Huo. I'm curious to see the railway tunnel list.
That most American cities are on plain areas says nothing about what is between them.
That's maybe why, together with larger and less sharp mountains, there aren't many road tunnels in North America, the longest one through a mountain being only around 3 km in length.
However there are many tunnels in Europe: Laerdal 25 km, Gotthard 17 km, Arlberg 14 km, Fréjus 13 km, Mont Blanc 11 km (and 2.5 km deep!), and many around 8 to 10 km in length.

but not with double tube. only 2 of them have double tube and are hardly long over 10 km (second tube of Plabutsch is even under 10 km). and only 10 of them are over 5 km (if both tubes of Kalimash tunnel in Albania are operational, then there are 11 of them)

Blame it on geology... The terrain in North America has "larger scale smoothness" to say so. Just compare the Alps and the Urals with Appalachians and Rockies...
On top of that, because of continentality, high areas around sharp ridges are not really suitable for permanent settlement in North America because of very harsh weather. If Central Colorado were as populated as Switzerland, we'd see much more tunnels.
The terrain in Alaska is also suitable for long tunnels but there is no population lingering around.

Can a mode please consider merging this thread on PRC highways' thread?
Majevčan March 25th, 2012, 04:07 AM That list of highway tunnels in China is impressive:eek:
hmmwv March 25th, 2012, 08:36 AM 50 tunnels with length over 3.3 miles that's pretty darn impressive, and probably most of them built in the last five to ten years.
General Huo March 25th, 2012, 06:40 PM New version, adding subaqueous tunnels and some missing ones

ChrisZwolle March 30th, 2012, 05:21 PM I've heard it is not the G56, but the Baomao expressway or G65, with the digits reversed. Or am I wrong?
Probably both
G56 is an east-west route, as its name indicates, it runs from Hangzhou to Ruili. G65 is a north-south route, connecting Baotou with Maoming. However, G65 has some significant missing mileage in this area.
bogdymol March 30th, 2012, 05:59 PM http://photocdn.sohu.com/20110524/Img308336394.jpg
Why is this road divided 2+3+2+3, with just a double line between lanes 2 and 3?
Luki_SL March 30th, 2012, 06:44 PM ^^Maybe first two lanes are for the local trafiic and three lines are for transit :)
Chilio March 30th, 2012, 06:50 PM Or maybe something to do with speed limits and weight of the vehicles (fast lanes/truck lanes)?
g.spinoza March 30th, 2012, 10:35 PM Is it higher than the Mexico's Baluarte Bridge?
No, Baluarte is the second highest in the world, while this one is 6th.

The blacked-out provincial expressway on the signs is for the future S42 黄浮高速 Huangfu Expressway. Anyone have information on when this will be completed?
flierfy March 31st, 2012, 12:30 PM i think this should be the widest highway in mainland china so far..5+5 lanes..
Yet, its central reservation is ridiculously narrow. And the visual cover there shortens the sight lines for drivers on the left most lane in left-hand bend significantly. A rather bad design in my eyes.

-Pino- April 2nd, 2012, 10:30 AM That's the biggest photo report about Chinese road signs that I have ever seen. Many thanks for looking them all up on the web and sharing them !
The signage is not bad at all, in my view. Route numbers signposted very clearly, which is something that often lacks in other countries with a developing road network. Fairly consistent approach to exit signage too. The use of bilingual signs always adds a bit of blur to the signs, where unilingual would have rendered clearer signs. But as a someone from the West, I should be glad that the roman characters are there and that many messages are also in English. What I don't like, however, are the gantry signs with focal points to the left and to the right of the route. A sign with all exiting focal points placed below one another would be much easier to read.
One final point that struck me: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expressways_of_China#Expressway_nomenclature) suggests that exit numbers above 999 should not exist as the Chinese exit numbers situated near km-post beyond km 1,000 are based on the last three digits of the km. But the photos suggest that that policy is quite heavily departed from, or am I missing something?
CNGL April 2nd, 2012, 11:06 AM I believe Guangdong doesn't follow the three digit policy. That explains the really really high exit numbers, up to 3500! And I thought the highest exit number ever was 1168, found on Spanish A-7 east-northeast of Tarragona.
@ Nima Farid: You misspelled Guangdong (The first time), Ningxia, and Gansu.
Nima-Farid April 3rd, 2012, 02:24 AM oh ok thanks for the correction
Yeah but in some areas like xinjiang uyghur it is only chinese and local alphabet (In that case arabic alphabet)
