The Prefecture of Serres is one of the 13 Prefectures of Macedonia, the largest part of our country in size and wealth. It takes up the Eastern part and stretches from Strymonikos bay, which is on its South side, up to the Greek-Bulgarian borders to the North. It borders on the Prefectures of Drama and Kavala from the East and the Prefectures of Thessaloniki and Kilkis from the West.
The landscape around Serres
The fauna of the Prefecture of Serres is rather abundant. In the mountainous areas of the Prefecture you can see wild boars, deer, hares, bears, wolves, badgers, foxes, wild cats and also birds such as partidges, wood-pigeons, turtle-doves, grouses, blackbirds, bee-eaters, hoopoes and other water-living birds, vultures etc.

World War II Memorial
The organised armed national resistance in Greece during the period of occupation 1941-44, started from Kerdylia, in the Prefecture of Serres. On 17th October 1941, the Hitleresque forces were informed that the armed Greek guerilla force "Ulysses Androutsos" walked through Saint Dimitrios monastery, near the villages at Ano and Kato Kerdylia. Then, they surrounded the area and arrested almost every man and boy, who were then executed on a hill, where the "Cemetery for those who fell for the Nation" can be found today. In total 250 people, between the age 15 and 60, were killed. The execution of the 250 Kerdylians was the first execution that took place in Greece.
However, Nigrita suffered untold losses during the German occupation. After a conflict between the German conquerors and the Greek guerrillas of the national resistance, the Germans set the electrical wiring on fire, burnt a large part of the city and arrested all the men, children and women in order to execute them. But after the mediation of the archimandrite Constantine Kardamenis, the women and children were set free, whereas the men were taken to Kalokastro village. Forty of these men were sent to concentration camps in Germany, whereas the rest were set free. The Germans' revulsion was rendered to Saint Nikitas' miracle, who is honoured by the inhabitants of Nigrita.

Amphipolis
Amphipolis was one of the most important cities of Macedonia. It was founded by the Athenian colonists in 437 BC, under the leadership of Hagnon, son of Nikias, on the site of the old township of Ennea Hodoi ("Nine Roads"). Hagnon named it Amphipolis due to the fact that it was washed by the Strymon river on both its sides. He built it in such a way as to be out of view as much from the sea as from the land, shutting it off by a long black enceinte from one side of the river to the other.
It played a very important role during the Peloponnesian war as recounted by Thucydides who, in his self-exile, spent the last years of his life in Amphipolis where he wrote the Peloponnesian war. Amfipolis hosted the royal mint of the Macedonians, and it was from Amphipolis that Philip II and Alexander III the Great set forth for their military operations.
It is also a city that was visited by the Apostle Paul, and therefore is visited by many who try to follow the footsteps of Paul. You may also know the name as it is used in the Xena TV series.

The Lion of Amphipolis
The Lion of Amphipolis, which is one of the most important monuments, not only of Amphipolis but also Macedonias', is next to the west bank of Strymon, close to the bridge. It was restored on a pedestal in the position where it was discovered, after the completion of the excavation. It is an imposing marble lion in a position of a sitted wildcat with its paws up. lt is erected just outside N. Kerdylia, on the national motorway between Thessaloniki and Kavala.
It is one of the most common of Macedonian symbols.
