Chad July 14th, 2005, 03:18 AM Here is what written in original :
The Thai capital has five hotels in the top 100 this year, more than any other city. The Sukhothai and Four Seasons (No. 69) join 2004's three qualifiers—the Peninsula, Oriental, and Shangri-La— all of which again make the cut."
Chad July 14th, 2005, 03:20 AM ...and...

staff July 17th, 2005, 11:19 AM How would Baiyoke inagurated hotel be rated in this kind of ranking? Is it much worse than the top 100 BKK hotels?
kiku99 July 17th, 2005, 03:53 PM since Baiyoke sky hotel is only a star hotel. so it never going to make the top world list. don't even know it ranks in the top 100 hotels in Bkk:D
Chad July 17th, 2005, 04:37 PM Baiyoke?..hehe.....It built to be Bangkok's tallest hotel with an affordable price and experiences that normal tourists can be achieved.
Besides, I'm quite glad it's not a 5-star hotel like The Four Seasons....atlease because of it's affordable price, I could stay there when ever I want yet doesnt suck much money out of my pocket...:okay:
XxRyoChanxX July 17th, 2005, 10:12 PM congrats bangkok!~ ^___^ :)

RobertoBKK July 18th, 2005, 03:21 AM Perhaps the Fours Seasons Bangkok will be ranked in a higher position once it it fully renovated. For the time being some only some of its suites have been renovated, but they look very nice! I am sure that it will soon start receiving accolades.

yeah modern and cool styles :) In addition to the Met and Davis, my personal favorite is The Sukhothai, modern and minimal but also super elegant and Thai flavor.....
Chad July 18th, 2005, 07:45 AM Is The Sukhothai a member of Beaufort Hotel?, I think so :)
Speed July 18th, 2005, 07:57 AM Is The Sukhothai a member of Beaufort Hotel?, I think so :)

Speed July 18th, 2005, 09:21 PM yeah..it used to be called The Regent Chiang Mai (until it was re-branded "Four Seasons"--there are hardly any "Regents" left)...but its not in Chiang Mai City, its north of the city in the countryside Mae Rim/Mae Sa area...but it is luxury-ville :)
satit28 July 19th, 2005, 03:36 AM oh........
yeah.........
they did page on it in house and garden when they opened it.............
i remember now.................
staff July 19th, 2005, 11:04 AM I knew Baiyoke wasn't a upmarket hotel, but I didn't realise it was of those standards. :) Anyway, it is one of my favourite scrapers.
Speed July 19th, 2005, 12:37 PM well yes, it would be nice to have a super upmarket hotel high in the sky in Bangkok (like the fabulous Grand Hyatt on the 53th to 88th floors of Tower Jin Mao in Shanghai) but its OK, we have SO MANY top world ranked upmarket hotels in Bangkok and all over the country (many more per square kilometer than richer countries like Japan :) ) and now we are building even more during the current construction BOOM !!!

Some times you travel to a city, but in some rare instances you travel to a hotel. Such a hotel is The Oriental in Bangkok.
Although the hotel first opened its doors in 1876, it's really only been since its takeover by legendary owner and manager Kurt Wachtveitl in 1967 that the hotel has been known as one of the world's greatest places to stay. And it's easy to understand why: Where else would a member of the staff literally run down the hallway to open your door before you can? Most hotels, even the best, believe that a key is enough for their guests to enter their rooms. Not The Oriental. Only a smiling, slightly out of breath butler will do.

The Noel Coward Suite in the Author's Residence.
Since the Vietnam War, when Bangkok was a favorite "R&R" spot for journalists and GIs, the city has become increasingly wealthy, but also increasingly congested--today boasting some of the worst traffic and air quality in the world. For busy executives or fortunate tourists in Bangkok, there can be few more welcome sights than the front entrance to The Oriental, with its promise of peace and tranquility.
Inside, the hotel is a mixture of Bangkok's past and present. The original part of the hotel, called the Author's Residences, recalls the age of Colonialism. And it received its name because, over the years, famous authors such as Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham have stayed--and sometimes even written--in the hotel during their trips to the East. These rooms are decorated in traditional Thai style, with some Western touches, and all look out over the Chao Phraya river that rolls along beneath the hotel.

The Author's Lounge where manager Kurt Wachtveitl hosts a weekly cocktail reception for guests.
The larger, more modern part of the hotel has its feet planted firmly in the 21st century. There are state-of-the-art communications systems, Internet connections and meeting and conference services. All parts of the hotel, however, are served by some of the best restaurants in Asia, including the Sala Rim Naam, a traditional Thai restaurant on the far side of the Chao Phraya (the hotel runs regular shuttle services) that also features Thai dancing.
Equally worthwhile visiting is the Oriental Spa (also located on the far side of the river), which incorporates traditional Thai massage with more Western beauty treatments.
Forbes Fact
For centuries the capital of Siam, which is the archaic name for modern Thailand, was the city of Ayuthaya. In 1782, King Rama I moved the capital to a trading post that he believed would be a more strategic defensible location. Using thousands of Khmer prisoners of war, the king expanded the new city's canal systems and built walls, temples and palaces for his new capital, Bangkok.

Like most great cities of the world, Bangkok is dirty, noisy, smelly, polluted and crowded--as well as wildly exhilarating. While most visitors will spend their days battling Bangkok's legendary traffic jams and visiting the myriad palaces and temples, one of the best places to come home to each night is the Sukhothai Hotel.
The hotel is spread out on six acres of gardens and pools in Bangkok's embassy and business district, so it's one of the few quiet places in the city. The look and feel of the hotel is meant to echo the golden years of Siam, which means a lot of silk fabric, ornate woodwork and gold-leaf detailing.
Most of the rooms overlook the inner courtyard, which is filled with gardens and lily ponds. The garden suites, located on the courtyard level, have king-sized beds draped with silk fabric. Most of the bathrooms have teak floors and claw-foot bathtubs. The Sukhothai Suite, the largest in the hotel, has six rooms, including a lounge area with a baby grand piano, private dining room, fully equipped kitchen and a study.
Since the hotel is geared toward the business traveler, all rooms have high-speed Internet connections, and guests have use of a 24-hour business center, which can assist with printing, interpretation, messenger service and computer needs.

Sukhothai's numerous restaurants and private dining rooms are popular spots for power breakfasts (as well as dinners). The Celadon restaurant, which is located in two salas (open-air pavilions) in the middle of the lotus pools, serves traditional Thai cuisine. The poolside Terrazzo features Italian cuisine, and the Bar has live music as well as private dining rooms.
The hotel can also arrange a round of golf at several nearby courses. Since the courses are about an hour outside of Bangkok, guests are transported in a Mercedes limousine.
Sukhothai also has an on-site cigar shop, as well as a salon and fitness center where Thai massages can be arranged indoors or poolside.
Rates range from $390 to $2,000 per night. For more information, call (66 2) 287 0222 or (800) 223-6800. Or E-mail reservation@sukhothai.com.
Forbes Fact
Like Venice, Bangkok is a sinking city. Bangkok is only1.5 meters above the sea, and some districts are sinking by up to 30 centimeters per year. The culprit? Bangkok's population of 6 million. High water consumption is depleting the supplies of the underground aquifers. Without water pressure to steady them, the sand and clay layers of these water traps are breaking down. As the earth compresses, the city above sinks, making it increasingly vulnerable to flooding.

loads of it..
Jo May 22nd, 2006, 12:19 PM It's silly with those claimed 6 and 7 star hotels being boasted around the world. It seems the best experience is still to be had at the five star hotels with superior services, history, ambience and surroundings.. the rest is just star inflation - marketing.
