We're still a very poor country. Let's wait another 10 years and the whole scenario will be very different.

Yea, people only knows that Vietnam is really poor so when people sees picture of Saigon they're really surprised. They expected something else.

Saigon is still not a very modern city anyway :)

Those are just common stereotypes, just ask randomly a Vietnamese what does he think about Dubai (most Viets haven't been there) so i'm sure he will start talking about huts and camels...

The rest of the world needs to be more exposed to Vietnam, learn about her as a destination for tourism, culture, traditions and cuisines etc.

And we're the perfect ambassadors. Let's participate more in SSC and mention Vietnam whenever you could. Let Vietnam be known.

To be known is to be glorious.

ya know
ông khổng tử tử nói "giếng nước ngọt thì bị cạn trước.....cây cao thì bị chặt trước"

so nothing worries me
be a big mouth and promoting vietnam at the same time keep it a low profile...don't make it a great and promising destination for terror attacks

I don't need the UN to tell me how great or how bad vietnam is....all I know is the country is doing fine, and people are happy no one suffer stress from work...and they have great faith in the up comming future. (not the case with many developing countries)

vietnamese students aren't commiting suicidal just because they failed university like Japan.
we don't worry about terrorism attack.
and we don't even attack foreign businessman or tourists just because they have diffferent religions and beliefs..........(take your memory back to the attacked on chinese people in jarkarta....or chinese attacked japanese in china recently)

but I say we need to attack the vietnamese government....hug em and kill em

When I lived in San Diego which has a large vietnamese community, I used to go
at least once a week to Pho hoa...

I definitely think that Vietnamese cuisine has a potential..!!

hey, I'm not good with the vietnamese language, but does Pho Hoa translate to Pho Chinese? or Chinese Pho? LOL.

Pho is becoming very popular, it's a trendy thing now to hang out at Pho places.

I know San Diego has a sizeable Vietnamese community, but do they have like a centralized location, or downtown area like Little Saigon in Orange county or in Houston?

Hoa with a left leaning tonal stroke means Harmony.

There's more to Vietnamese cuisine than just pho. Talking about broth based dishes there are at least 5 other well known ones, like Bun Rieu, Bun Bo Hue or Hu Tieu Nam Vang. You've just gotta try them.

I personally prefer Bun Rieu over Pho anyday.

ewww, gross. I used to like Bun Rieu, but I got sick and tired of it after eating it alot. Maybe its just the way my mom makes it. lol.

Now, I wonder, is there any shops that serve Cao Lao in the US? I had some Cao Lao in Hoi An, but I want to eat some over here too, because its really good. I live 2 minutes away from the most populated vietnamese community outside of Vietnam, so I bet they should have it, but I have never seen it.

The story of Cao Lao says that real Cao Lao has to use the water from the Ba Le well in Hoi An. Probably a myth. but its interesting.

My grandma makes the best Bun Rieu so no complaint. I like my Bun Rieu with extra crab meat and puffy tofu.

You mean Cao Lau? I've heard of it but never actually tried it. I'll try that when I visit Hoi An next time.

I think the best value for money dish I've tried was Com Hen (mussel rice) in Hue, near the Imperial citadel. OMG it was so good and a bowl costs only VND2,000 (less than 20 cents)

ya know this reminds me of the 3 chinese vietnamese girls I met on the plane on the way back to canada....they were around my age, very young indeed......but spoke perfect English, CHinese, and Vietnamese........and so pretty.....but their conversation just reminded me of Jessica Simpson or "dumb blond"

1 of the said "i miss napping at noon in Vietnam, we don't nap in canada"
1 said "I miss the food...OMG..OMG so cheap 20.000VND for 10 bowls of "Chao Long"
1 said "I'm broke"

I love their conversation ...so amusing....love to meet them again someday....and get to know them...so cute and funny...........and looking so busted when all 3 dragged their luggages from the airplane to custom.

wait a minute, you didn't get their phone number?!? On every single one of my flights I was sitting next to an elderly person. :( And there were no hot chicks on my flight except for the EVA airlines stewardesses. :(

You were lucky you sat near some hot girls. I would have tried to strike up a conversation with them, especially since you guys have something in common. I bet you could have gotten their numbers.

maybe there are only old and ugly girls in california? hehehe

I found it very strange that during my 2 times to Vietnam, sitting on 6 different planes altogether, there were only young vietnamese around 90%.....only 10% are seniors......after Toronto, they landed to Vancouver the westcoast, and picked up another group of Vietnamese...and they were all young people....and most are travelled alone, not with family.....that's why it was so noisy on the planes...........maybe it's the harsh weather here that draws young vietnamese comming back to Vietnam?

about the girls.....I always came early, so I requested "window seats" 5/6 times I got to sit near the window. So that time, I was sitting next to a 20yr old Hong Kong girl....the other 3 girls were sitting in the middle seats......So I only got to listen to their conversation.......and I'm very shy, when I see a girl I liked ...I tend to hit them and run away hehehe
so many young beautiful Vietnamese girls on the planes but I remember these 3 the most because they got the biggest mouths, very fluent in 3 languages and not your typical "pretty asian" but extremely flawless beautiful. 1 of them looked so flawless she could be a model.

on that note...that was my second trip
during my first trip when I'm from Vietnam back to Canada...I was on the same plane with that Vietnamese singer Trizzie Phuong Trinh, and her husband Bang Kieu......she looked so white and beautiful like Japanese......and her hubby looked like a monkey.....the vietnamese girls were asking Bang Kieu for signature....and Trizzie gave them this scary looked like "I will kill you all for hitting on my husband" her eyes were so scary hehehe

Come to think of it, my grandpa wanted me to be named Ho Chi Minh....In a place called Kerala, India, Vietnamese history is legendary.

Believe me, HCM as a hero is only a myth. Gandhi is the real hero.

I think Ho Chi Minh is a hero. There's no doubt about the fact that he is the father of modern Vietnam as we know today. Whether we agree with his ideology or what he did prior to independence is another matter.

I think you should do the reverse. Vietnam should expose to the rest of the world. Before the world care or acknowledge vietnam as a destination for tourism, culture, traditions and cuisines etc you should expose yourself first and base on what i see you are actually doing quite good. Just for example the commercials of Vietnam Airlines and SEA games .

meaning the dude had the ability to lead a group of Bach Tuyet 7 Chu Lun to war

well, as a kid, i used to talk about vietnam all the time when i was travelling... but now, i'm quiet reserved when i talk about Vietnam, cause we don't wana see Vietnam becoming like China (destroying all the relics for modern buildings) or Thailand (same as China + sexual tourism)... so when people tell me "vietnam is poor, i'm never gonna get there" i just let them think what they want, anyway, you can't change people's mind when they have this stupid thinking...

We just need to wait another year to see a more beautifull of Vietnam
