The Dakshineshwar Kali Temple was constructed in 1855. It is a magnificent example of late Bengali temple architecture. It is dedicated to Goddess Kali, much venerated in Bengal. Bengal's famous saint Ramakrishna used to meditate here.

As I said before, the temple was built in the late 19th century. It's not different from traditional style, its simply the traditional architecture of Bengal, and India's northeast states like Assam and Manipur, where Laxmi/Saraswati/Kali is just as reveared.

The temples were originally terracotta construction dervied from traditional reed and bamboo based forms of Bengal, as well as being derivitives of the great Stupa architecture of Bengal and Orissa.

Also, many Kali temples in India are built in this form. And even mosques and churches in West Bengal and Bangladesh carry over from this style.
