Why is it sad? It's not a particularly rich place... I think that's doing quite well.

Plus what's wrong with the skyline...? Reminds me of many places throughout the world...like Florida, or Australian coasts?

Very nicely formed skyline- seems to peak at the centre and then gradually taper down, creates a good focal point. Individual buildings leave a fair bit to be desired though and needs some new stuff. A bit more height would also be good but probably not needed. Cheers

Durban is a beautiful city, unfortunately these photos do not give that impression. I hope you guys visit the city and see that it is indeed a wonderful place.

Thats because its a SOUTH African city. There is a difference!

New restaurants on harbour overlooked by the urban wall of the Esplanade. The beach-facing highrise district is around 3km down this road.
The harbour is the busiest and most important on the continent.

the city has a lot to offer and the new developments coming online are gonna change the face of it. The boom that is consuming SA cities will make them some of the most modern looking in a few years

I gave Durbs a 10, sorry my view on this city is not completely neutral as I am married in this city and go there every year. The skyline comming from the M6 or N3 freeway looks very impressing.Also the hotels on the Mile look amazing. With all new plans Durbs will become an even better place. Let's not forget this is still Africa.

Yeah the new dev is going to rock the city soon. 30 cranes up and about all over the place, and work has started on the first 2 biggies (Spinnaker and Pearl Breeze).

I am from this city, so defenately not so impressive as Durban,
my wife is S-African and her family still lives in Durbs.
I will be there again in November, can't wait to see all new improvements

it will be much better when the buildings u/c are up, for the Beachfront skyline will be extended and the hotels around the ICC will add even more density to the central city. We do need more height! All the big buildings in Durban that are u/c arent in the cbd, they are more dispersed. also biggest building headed to Durbs (the +180m Pearl Sky) is to be in the edge city of Umhlanga (20km north on the coast)

Durban is a growing city and has HQ's of some of SA's top companies, but the majority of the top 100 are still found in joburg (or Sandton...the northern suburb of joburg where most firms that left downtown joburg went to)

Yeh i will go back an take a pic on a sunny day and try get the whole coastline from point to umhlanga...but thats like 25km in one pic...might not be too clear, but will see...

Looks nothing like a Florida skyline. It does not have enough glass, flashy colors or glitz. It looks more like the old Vancouver skyline or any Canadian city prior to the 1980's building boom. Brown highrises by the sea are unnerving.

The skyline is big though

^ Yet the party feel is unbeaten. I love Durban because it's fun...the glamour can be left to Cape Town.

according to this list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_Africa), Durban has 12 buildings that are 100+ metres tall. And none 150+ metres.
