KnightRiderBMW July 19th, 2005, 05:27 AM nice pics! they were taken June 2nd? or February 6?
LacLongQuan July 19th, 2005, 06:46 AM Incredible pictures. I love Saigon more and more and can't wait to visit her again in 2007.
coolink July 19th, 2005, 06:31 PM judging from the small building underconstruction on Le Loi street I say it was last year when I was there.
and the last picture was Tet on Nguyen Hue street....during a time when some crazy CHinese people claimed to celebrated new year on february
Nongkhai_tong July 19th, 2005, 06:41 PM Nice pics I never been to Vietnam before but some day I would love to visit,I wonder how many Motocycles on the road

Uncountable lah,You would love Vietnam if you go there.I never been to the south of Vietnam :)
Almenac-SS July 21st, 2005, 03:10 AM That city looks very colourful.. although it needs more high rises..
but anyways.. it looks great :)
i would love to visit the beaches in vietnam and other SEA countries..
Mantas July 21st, 2005, 02:59 PM Great pics, thanks for sharing!
But why are there so many motorcyclists in Saigon? Here even biker festivities don't gather so many ;)
staff July 21st, 2005, 07:17 PM I heard there are 5-6 million motos in Saigon, could that number be accurate? I guess many people got motos when the Chinese copies of the Honda Om (Xe Om) became available. ;)
skynet126 July 22nd, 2005, 07:39 AM I don't known about car, but they do have a lot of motorcycles, I mean ton. Since vietnam do not have much car, they pretty much relied on motor extensively
LacLongQuan July 22nd, 2005, 08:24 AM Cars are taxed heavily to discourage people from buying cars so most could only afford cheap scooters, especially domestic or Chinese made ones. Saigon is already crowded with scooters so I couldn't imagine it with cars.
There are around 5 million motorcycles in Saigon.
KnightRiderBMW July 22nd, 2005, 10:09 AM If you have a car in Vietnam, you are considered wealthy. A new BMW 325i costs 80,000 USD, it costs only 30,000USD in the US. And I saw a Mercedes SL55 and S55, those are over 200,000 USD each!
that's pretty expensive, I know foreign cars in china are quite expensive too, like bmw's and such. Does anyone know what country a car costs the most in? I can't imagine it costing much more than in Vietnam.
Mantas July 22nd, 2005, 10:20 AM Interesting
Nongkhai_tong July 22nd, 2005, 12:27 PM Do you import a motobike from Thailand/ they look really like the same model in Thailand
coolink July 22nd, 2005, 04:42 PM I really don't want saigon to change all of it's mode of transportation to cars....personally I preffer the moped now......it's so cool to enjoy the views and people watching.
easy to park, cheap maintenant.....faster U turn hehe
oh ...very easy to hit and run......and hide when you got chased
there were 1 moment sitting on the moped and I was thinking...hhmm...people on the street they all got the same damn nose, eye, mouth, but none of them looked the same. I couldn't do that with cars.
once I passed by this quiet neighbourhood around 8pm, very dark, i saw a moving van on the street with no one driving........I was freaked out, I thought it was a ghost van.......but when the van stopped at the intersection ...I looked in...there was a black guy driving.....spooky or what?
skynet126 July 23rd, 2005, 07:55 AM the view are not going to be nice like you mention when motorcycles roam the city, oh boy it going to be crowded. Saigon need some metro and monorail fast. It just so crowded and the street is so narrow
kojima eater July 23rd, 2005, 09:57 AM Do you import a motobike from Thailand/ they look really like the same model in Thailand
Most of motorbikes in Vietnam are Japanese or Chinese .They look the same not only in Thai but also in China and elsewhere because actually everyone copies the model from Japanese producer , i have never heard of copyright in Southeast Asia or China.
YelloPerilo July 23rd, 2005, 03:56 PM Haven't been ther for so long. Love Saigon a lot :) And the food ... so delicious :)
And the beaches there are wonderful :)

mysaong03 August 20th, 2005, 08:46 PM hi everyone, my family is planning to visit saigon on xmas vacation. iv never been to vietnam yet & im very excited for this trip!
BTW, is it true that cars being sold there are quite expensive? is it due to a very high import tax or somethin else? how expensive there is a corolla, lancer or sentra anyway???
:)
KnightRiderBMW August 20th, 2005, 11:17 PM I don't know about the other cars, but I believe a BMW 325i is around 70-80K USD.
mysaong03 August 27th, 2005, 11:39 PM quite expensive, i checked the BMW showroom here in Manila & its only a lil over 20t dollars :)

Hello Ladies and Gens, I’m a newbie. You guys have a very interesting forum.
Time Magazine’s report (Dec.17, 2007 written by Kay Johnson) there are 22 million motorbikes in Vietnam. Currently motorbikes make up 90% of road traffic and fewer than 10% of the riders wear helmets. Last year 14,000 Vietnamese died in traffic accidents and 80% of them from head injuries. According to the nonprofit Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIPF), each year 23,000 riders suffer debilitating brain damage from injuries.
PS. Cu Xa Nghan Hang (Tan Thuan) is my home town, it’s about ½ a mile from Tan Thuan Bridge. I haven’t been home seen 1998. If any of you head to Saigon south please snap some pix. Thanks a million. Damn, I miss Saigon. :bash:
Anberlin December 13th, 2007, 12:40 PM Hm.. Saigon is looking fascinating at the moment. When I visited in 2005, the city even gave me the "WOW" factor. I can't wait to visit Saigon again... and Nha Trang.

I vote for Myamar where the cost of car is said to be 3 times higher than that of Vietnam.

RadioFan January 14th, 2008, 10:47 PM I am curious to know which Vietnamese people prefer Hochiminh or Saigon.
My opinion is Saigon is better for it's long historicity.

of course, saigon is better name. hochiminh is only used in administrative cases. however; two names are good
RadioFan January 15th, 2008, 07:29 AM ^^ I see... Thanks. :okay:
remipepsi January 17th, 2008, 11:31 AM im not trying to hijack or anything, im planning to visit Vietnam HCM for tet, i have never been there this would be my first, i would like to know a few thing at the local point of view, how much do taxi usually charge just to go around town? nothing far. eating for two at a local restaurant average price nothing fancy, anything information about the city and price would help.
Saigoneseguy January 17th, 2008, 07:40 PM Taxi charges around 1$ first kilometre and 20c for each kilometre after the 1st. That's cheap compared to many countries but not as cheap as Thailand. Dinner ranges from 5$-40$ per people depends on location but you're expected to spend at least (VND 300k) 20$ at (fancy, expensive) trattorias in downtown for a dinner for two. Prices has risen quite a lot recently, unfortunately, however cheap eating at local spots are rather delicious but you must know where to look.

SAIGON, SAIGON, SAIGON, SAIGON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
remipepsi January 17th, 2008, 08:43 PM thank you for the respond, actually my wife and I are living in Bangkok, compare the taxi rate it's not that bad, almost the same 33baht=$1US for a start and the rest are quite similar. as for food 300,000 VND for a fancy dinner is reasonable 300,000VND=568baht actually its quite a little bit cheaper, in Bangkok a fancy dinner will run you about 1,000baht and up, twince the money, i will be using baht to buy VND, the usage of money for everyday life are some what similar, i can hang with that. thank

if you use mailinh taxi (the most popular one in Vietnam), it charges you $1 for the first two kilometres, 4 cents each from the third kilometre i think.

it's 40 cents each km, not 4 cents :D
CongTuSaiGon January 18th, 2008, 07:31 AM Saigon for sure
remipepsi January 26th, 2008, 09:21 PM does anybody know the exchange rate for buying dong with baht?
Saigoneseguy January 26th, 2008, 09:43 PM 1000 dong= 2 baht.
