This huge city is rather unknown in this forum :(

At first sight it looks a little messy , but looking closer at the 2nd pic it desserves some credit

Mmm, a fair 5.5

I think it's actually rather sloppy... cool city... just kinda ugly skyline sadly. :(

Pros: Density!

Cons: Bad architecture!

Overall... If I were drunk I'd wanna visit :D

I agree with kuku and X-Seed, nice clusters but the individual buildings look rather plain. probalby the best in Africa though, right?

Most South African towers were built in the 70s and I think that gives the city a very different feel. I'm a fan of different looking towers however because all the buildings are in some sort of harmony I think Johannesburg isn't bad.

Awful.
Its looks like Gangus Khan got drunk, s**t himself and threw stones in the groynd that now make up its "buildings."

great pics btw.

It has a focus point.. But really unbalanced, the skyline that is.. :bash: But still, good skyline for an African country.. :) Could have done better though, since its the capital of South Africa :D

Johannesburg isnt South Africa's capital. Its the biggest by far, but the capital is Pretoria - another cool city which probably has a nicer looking more modern skyline.
The thing that strikes me most about JHB is its size. Damn the place is massive! Even though alot of its buildings are boring 1960s boxes and it doesnt have a great deal of height, its skyline stretches for miles and miles. Its hard to find a pic that captures the entire skyline of downtown Joburg and the very dense high-rise district of Hillbrow. Those pics hardly do it any justice whatsoever!
I give Joburg an 7... mainly for its size and that mega-city look.

No offense guy but I would much rather live in a big South African city (Cape Town, Durban, Jo'burg) than a russian one. Better weather ,music and food, you know.

But no, actually there a couple of a growing skylines in Africa but Jo'burg seems to be the best.
But here are some more pics on Jo'burg.

Well those are pretty old pictures...

There are much better ones out there, you know...

go to http://www.pbase.com/joburg and check out my pics... should give you more of an idea of what the city really looks like.

http://http://www.joburg.org.za/gallery/cityscapes/Hillbrow_sunset.jpg

As for my rating.... a 10. But then again, I am biased... :D

PS... SOmeOne, why didn't you expect there to be any cities in Africa? It's not a continent of savages and lions, you know... The infrastructure in Johannesburg is very similar to other cities in say, the USA for example...

Although Joburg's skyline in the 70' and 80's was simply awesome, it has now become plain and unmodern. I know there is lots of construction going on in suburbian Johannesburg, especially in the new middle/upper -class suburbs, but the city centre and surroundings have stopped in time. No tall skyscraper has been built and down town Johannesburg is just simply out of fashion or just simply uncontemporary.

Pretty decent for a skyline that hasn't changed in 20 years! The CBD is coming to live again though...hopefully a blinging new centre piece scraper would be announced soon.

I enjoyed the photos, 8.5/10.

I heard that the Ponte City building was once considered the most dangerous building in South Africa or Johannesburg. Is this still the case today?

I love Jo'burg and the skyline's impressive, but it does need some modernising in my opinion. Two or three shiny new skyscrapers will make the skyline a 9. For now though 7.5.

if u had to rate johannesburg on size it would be one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the world. I live in the northern suburbs and it takes an hour to drive from the top to the bottom of the city on the highway
