De Snor February 4th, 2003, 12:42 PM This huge city is rather unknown in this forum :(
At first sight it looks a little messy , but looking closer at the 2nd pic it desserves some credit
Oaronuviss February 5th, 2003, 12:54 AM Mmm, a fair 5.5
I think it's actually rather sloppy... cool city... just kinda ugly skyline sadly. :(
kiku99 February 5th, 2003, 03:23 AM The skyline is pretty big...but skyscrapers are not that nice.
X-seed 4000 February 5th, 2003, 10:06 AM Pros: Density!
Cons: Bad architecture!
Overall... If I were drunk I'd wanna visit :D
7.0/10
dweezy February 7th, 2003, 12:40 AM I agree with kuku and X-Seed, nice clusters but the individual buildings look rather plain. probalby the best in Africa though, right?
7/10
Levent February 8th, 2003, 02:59 PM Most South African towers were built in the 70s and I think that gives the city a very different feel. I'm a fan of different looking towers however because all the buildings are in some sort of harmony I think Johannesburg isn't bad.
Tony 175 February 9th, 2003, 08:06 AM Awful.
Its looks like Gangus Khan got drunk, s**t himself and threw stones in the groynd that now make up its "buildings."
great pics btw.
sOmeOne February 9th, 2003, 08:12 AM well, heck dude - it's Africa! I never thought that they have any cities at all!!
9/10, just cuz it's African :D
ryanr February 22nd, 2003, 03:15 PM pretty good....7/10
BGT April 18th, 2003, 11:19 PM 7/10
TropicalSQ744 April 19th, 2003, 06:48 PM It has a focus point.. But really unbalanced, the skyline that is.. :bash: But still, good skyline for an African country.. :) Could have done better though, since its the capital of South Africa :D
8/10
BTW DUDE!! Those are checkboxes!! WHat have you been thinking??!! LOL :bash: :D
Mandoza May 30th, 2003, 04:18 AM Johannesburg isnt South Africa's capital. Its the biggest by far, but the capital is Pretoria - another cool city which probably has a nicer looking more modern skyline.
The thing that strikes me most about JHB is its size. Damn the place is massive! Even though alot of its buildings are boring 1960s boxes and it doesnt have a great deal of height, its skyline stretches for miles and miles. Its hard to find a pic that captures the entire skyline of downtown Joburg and the very dense high-rise district of Hillbrow. Those pics hardly do it any justice whatsoever!
I give Joburg an 7... mainly for its size and that mega-city look.

No offense guy but I would much rather live in a big South African city (Cape Town, Durban, Jo'burg) than a russian one. Better weather ,music and food, you know.
But no, actually there a couple of a growing skylines in Africa but Jo'burg seems to be the best.
But here are some more pics on Jo'burg.

joburg October 19th, 2003, 05:16 PM Well those are pretty old pictures...
There are much better ones out there, you know...
go to http://www.pbase.com/joburg and check out my pics... should give you more of an idea of what the city really looks like.
http://http://www.joburg.org.za/gallery/cityscapes/Hillbrow_sunset.jpg
As for my rating.... a 10. But then again, I am biased... :D
PS... SOmeOne, why didn't you expect there to be any cities in Africa? It's not a continent of savages and lions, you know... The infrastructure in Johannesburg is very similar to other cities in say, the USA for example...

i_am_hydrogen January 5th, 2005, 10:57 PM 8.5/10. Very impressive, quite dense and extensive, with some nice canyons from what those pictures showed. Aesthetically, however, it leaves a little something to be desired.
MattSal June 25th, 2005, 07:59 PM Good density and clustering, but a few more talls couldn't hurt. I give it a 7.5/10.

Paulo2004 January 3rd, 2006, 02:43 PM Although Joburg's skyline in the 70' and 80's was simply awesome, it has now become plain and unmodern. I know there is lots of construction going on in suburbian Johannesburg, especially in the new middle/upper -class suburbs, but the city centre and surroundings have stopped in time. No tall skyscraper has been built and down town Johannesburg is just simply out of fashion or just simply uncontemporary.

I heard that the Ponte City building was once considered the most dangerous building in South Africa or Johannesburg. Is this still the case today?
Avens March 22nd, 2008, 04:21 PM I love Jo'burg and the skyline's impressive, but it does need some modernising in my opinion. Two or three shiny new skyscrapers will make the skyline a 9. For now though 7.5.

Klausenburg November 7th, 2008, 03:38 PM I heard that the Ponte City building was once considered the most dangerous building in South Africa or Johannesburg. Is this still the case today?

Nolin November 19th, 2009, 09:51 PM if u had to rate johannesburg on size it would be one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the world. I live in the northern suburbs and it takes an hour to drive from the top to the bottom of the city on the highway
ovem November 19th, 2009, 10:22 PM wow! amazing city. It looks so american. 8.5/10 Well Johannesburg is a mega-city for sure but i don't think is one of the biggest cities worldwide when some cities reach 20 and 30 million

alama March 7th, 2011, 07:51 PM Nice i like the city and i've been there a dozen times, looks more like a Canadian city, but u guys would be surprised how huge the city is. The metro area goes all the way to Pretoria(the capital of SA) turning into a huge megacity. There are awful traffic congestions, crimes, poverty, luxury, huge mansions, etc.
10/10 :applause:

kangaroo0100 March 20th, 2011, 03:30 AM 6.0. The skyline is kind of dense, but it's not very good aesthetically, kind of ugly. And a few more tall buildings that stand out would be good.
EDIT: Upgraded to 7 because the newer pictures change my impression of the skyline somewhat. I hadn't looked at the newer ones before my original post.

The best skyline in Africa, and one of the most underrated in the world. It's not exceptionally tall, but the density in and around the CBD can't be denied. This skyline was featured quite prominently in District 9.... And speaking of which, I thought that using Johannesburg as the setting for the movie was brilliant from a symbolic standpoint, as well as a practical and story-telling standpoint.
I would love to visit this city some day.

No doubt it is Africa's best...but it is still pretty bland. Density is nice, but the skyline is not that impressive compared on a global scale.
