Brasília (IPA: [bɾaˈziliɐ]) is the capital of Brazil, located in the central part of the country. It has a population of about 2,383,784 as of the 2006 census estimate, and is the seat of the main federal government: the president (residing in the Palácio do Planalto), the Brazilian supreme court, and the Brazilian parliament. Brasília is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Building of the city began in 1956 with Lúcio Costa as the principal urban planner and Oscar Niemeyer as the principal architect. In 1960, it formally became Brazil's capital. When seen from above, the city's shape resembles an airplane or a butterfly.
Brasília is located in the Federal District, which has the same borders as the city. The federal district is surrounded by the Brazilian state of Goiás,except for a short boundary with Minas Gerais. The city is not a traditional municipality by Brazilian law.

SteelCity32 February 4th, 2003, 10:14 PM there is nothing to it. Capital of Brazil...:(
4/10
Oaronuviss February 5th, 2003, 12:50 AM Very low ratings... for the size of the city, the skyline should me massive... but it's not even tall...let alone dense.
:(
I give it a 4.5
X-seed 4000 February 5th, 2003, 10:16 AM C'mon guys... the skyline may kinda suck... but Brasilia is just like Ottowa and Washington D.C... it wasn't meant to have huge ass skyline!
kiku99 February 6th, 2003, 12:40 AM not many skyscrapers. But the city looks very organized. Just need more of fancy designed skyscrapers.
Raddie February 9th, 2003, 12:21 AM What's up with this town. It's build in the middle of nowhere :wtf:
Tony 175 February 9th, 2003, 08:11 AM Amazing!
Unfortunetly, amazingly awful.
It looks like I ate a burrito, drank milk, melted a stick of butter, drank it with ketchup, took some laxitivs and vomited all over the whole city.
I mean, really.
i give this national park a 3.

========
I counted the floors in some boxes - not even approaching 15... sorry...
Bruno BHZ February 11th, 2003, 05:56 AM I gave it a 10. it's one of my favorite cities. Veeery green, laaaarge avenues, everything very spread, only modern architecture. Amazing, amazing, amazing. You have to visit it to understand.
As Oscar Niemeyer, the architect of Brasília said:
"You may like it or not, but you can't say you've seen something like it before"
schmidt February 11th, 2003, 08:39 AM Unfortunately I don't like my country's capital city :(
Looks boring :(
I'd rather it to be build in the 90's, it'd look so more modern :D

johonbravo February 15th, 2003, 08:10 PM have ANY of you ever been to brasilia? It truly was one of the greatest cities i have EVER beent to. I LOVE this city. I have beent here sever times. OPEN SPACE! and planning is amazing. Amazing museams and culture.!
johonbravo February 18th, 2003, 11:52 PM man you guys have low ratings!
AcesHigh February 21st, 2003, 02:49 AM Brasilia was a city build in the middle of nothing, in the 60s, from scratch, to serve as Brasil´s capital and promote the development of the central area of Brasil. The city is designed to be a government body... its not a city designed to have massive skyscrapers... why would there be massive skyscrapers or huge aglomerates of buildings? For the government? Well... the Congress building has 28 floors and the Central Bank building is some of the tallest buildings in Brasil. Since its not an industrial and commercial city, and most of its inhabitants work for the government, it has what it needs and that is: big residential complexes for the government workers (many of them are paid by taxpayers, since few residents actually live in the city... most of them are there only during the mandate of a specific government), big functional buildings for government related bodies, palaces for embassies, a little commercial district for everything else the population might need...
X-seed 4000 February 21st, 2003, 04:44 AM Well said Aces! I'd like to see a Rate Our Skylines of Washington D.C... and see how many TRUTHFULLY gave a high score. I know that Washington D.C has some great buildings... but it doesn't have a nice skyline. Its the same for Brasilia... it may not have many amounts of historic buildings... but it has the opposite, the city has many modern looking buildings! Its especially amazing because most of the designs still look very futuristic... even though they were built over a half century ago!
johonbravo February 27th, 2003, 01:20 AM well said.
Van der Rohe February 27th, 2003, 02:30 AM I don't know exactly why, but Niemeyer's architecture fascinates me.
9,5/10
luis4083 February 27th, 2003, 03:46 AM 10/10
johonbravo February 27th, 2003, 07:01 PM if you campare these buildigns with otehrs built in the 60's Brasilia is WAY moer modern...brasilia is also very clean and open. I has the most green space per person in the world.

You wish. DC is a lot better than that.
dcb11 May 27th, 2003, 11:21 PM I agree that the buildings are a little boring by todays post-modern standards. I've read a lot about this city. Its really fascinating, even though I would not like to live there.
The people (or most of them) live in these huge, socialist-style apartment complexes called Superquadra. The city is layed out like an airplane. Its really interesting to look at, and probably to visit, but it is a relic of a past time, in my opinion. Still, an important testament to architectual genius of the time.

Thunderflip April 21st, 2005, 06:15 PM I like this masterpiece, its planning...its artistic aporach in city and urban planning. Also the swanky designs of the parliament, memorial or monumental buildings and the infastructure. But not hightech, seems lacking of many things, just a boring capital city but beautiful...and it doesn'T really comprise a skyline and I just can'T imagine living in a ghost city that has no past...sorry. I won'T rate it because I also love and respect this city.

this is more skybar discussion though!

Daniel Athias October 28th, 2008, 07:34 PM Brasilia urbanism is amazing, is heritage of humanity by unesco since 1988, the architecture is hommogenious , anda basicaly from the same architect, Oscar Niemeyer wich is one of the greatest brazilian arquitects, and brasilia is one of the brazilian cities that offer better quality of life, the city is the richest per capta( among the state capitals of Brazil), and has one of the highest HDI among the other great cities in brazil, if you consider the initially planned part( plano piloto), the HDI is the highest among the states capitals of Brazil(all this rich politicians...), by the way, the city is inspired in
LE CORBUSIER architecture, and is the closest that we can get from the utpoic non built project of "CITÉ RADIOUSE"(sorry i dont know french, is it right?), the great green area + this blocks with maximum 6 floors is one of his ideas.....
i 'll give nine for the city that is unique in the world...
