^^^ Wow, nice pics. Actually AMD is not that bad. Earlier it was horrible, but then there was this Gujarat promotion campaign or something like that, they really spruced up the airport. Now(I mean in Sept 2003), I think that AMD has a pretty airport for its size. Altho considering the number of Gujju NRIs, it would be better if they expand it tho.

Santa Cruz Airport Terminal IB looks very much like a leading edge slat of an aircraft wing. It's got a very aerodynamic feel from the outside but looks limitedly fluid inside. Overall a fantastic piece of work considering the fact that Hafeez Contractor has had to work on limited space and work on old foundations. A very good example for students of architecture. I LIKE the terminal for what it is in pictures.

My only sore complaint is the placement of the X-ray machines and the use of hospitalesque screens. What next? Used government wooden tables for security personnel at the entrance?

my only grouse is that the check-in area is really small, esp depth wise. a decently sized queue and there is no space left for someone to manoeuvre near the back

also there should be more than one entrance near the front. one small entrance is ridiculous

Nice picture of Delhi airport, showing the exact layout. I don't think such a picture existed before this. Now waiting for one like this for other airports. We already have a good aerial for Chennai, thanks to our own planemad. But we desperately need such pics for the other airports in the country.

This airport is in Agatti, a tiny island which is part of the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea. Indian Airlines runs Dornier flights between Cochin and Agatti.

BTW, the work was pending approval from PIB since the total project cost was about 256 crores. When it was cleared by PIB and was about to be launched by the Prime Minister of India, the elections for Kerala Assembly were annnouced and thus it had to be put on hold. So now we have to wait till the next ministry takes charge.

Aargh! I was looking forward to it! IMO it's a rather unique design, and, contrary to popualr belief, culturally sound (assuming masala dosas are commonly eaten in Kerala).

As per the EOI released by AAI, the contract period for the first phase is 18 months. If everything goes well and the work starts by Sep- Oct 06, we can expect it to be over by around April 2008.

Thats a suprise!! Thought those buses were foreign made but that is great news. Good looking swish modern buses is what India needs whether at airports or cities. I also like the new Volvo buses in India too. Now if other airports have those buses that would be another improvement. Indore airport looks interesting, very clean, neat and tidy. Glad the Airports in Mumbai & Delhi are in private hands as they need definetly need modernising.

some quick pics on my way out from teminal 1-a at bombay. i love this terminal for its efficiency. 10 mins from opening of plane doors to the exit (along with baggage) in a bright, airy and clean environment. not flashy but does the job well

This new terminal is quite narrow in width. They should replace those outside screenings to inline screening at the counters. That should free up some ample space. Those security screening machines looks like they occupy space in the middle.. what a hassle for passengers to move around with trolleys..

Good travelogue, Sudheesh. About the Deccan A-320, am not exactly sure. That could be the Mumbai or Delhi flights coming in. The aircraft which flies to Delhi and Chennai is based here. Deccan is soon basing one more aircraft here. Kingfisher and Go-Air also have gotten night parking slots for aircraft.

are those planes docked at a terminal or some temporary maintenance place. i honestly hope it's not the terminal.

you can see tractors with luggage trolleys moving towards the planes, so they are not under maintainence.

The so called aiport looks like a local bus depot from air.

The houses outside the airport (left of the pic) are so perilously close to the aircraft, that anyone from these houses can fling something onto them.

And that small white building with the two aerobridges is probably the nice looking building the photo of which Sudheesh posted.

You can even see Syntex watertanks on top of the airport. Truly International.

Will they also modernize the other half which is probably the domestic section? Now that the city will get a new airport, spending too much money here may not be a good idea. But this is where people will be landing and getting shocked till 2009. By the way does the incompetent AAI manage this airport or is managed by HAL?

Yes, you said it right Sun, the nice looking front facade of the terminal I posted is exaclty the one with the two aerobridges. It is the 'Arrival' for both domestic & international as well as departure for international.

The block next to it is for the domestic departure. The one with syntex tanks as Luckystreak said.

On a personal note, I would prefer to land at this Airport always, since my flat is just 2.5 kms away..ha ha ha :)

AAI manages the terminal and the city side, including the apron and all facilities connected with the apron. HAL manages most of the air side, i.e. traffic control, runways, firefighting equipment etc.

This is a HAL airstrip and should never have been the main airport of the city. Fortunately, this situation is only going to last another 2 years.

Cities that have shared airports with air force facilities must, over the next few years, build alternative airports. It is not good for the airforce in many airports - their flying is restricted. And the flying as well as terminal facilities at these airports are severely restricted. Many of the northeastern airports (Jorhat, Bagdogra) and in the Western sector (Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Bhuj, Pune) fall in this category of civil enclaves in air force bases. Most of these cities can feasibly have separate civil airports.

Even this is a vastly improved airport. Just a few years ago, the airport had all of three aircraft stands, none of which were in-contact stands (i.e. no aero bridges). The terminal was only 2/3rds the current area. The interiors were not airconditioned (or at any rate, the airconditioning did not work). Runway capacity was severely limited because of HAL and airforce operations, plus the lack of a taxiway.

It is not just AAI's fault in this particular instance. They did not have any leeway to operate. As you can see from the picture, there is no space to expand. The opposite end of the runway has space but cannot be used for a terminal since it is a restricted defence/HAL zone. A new airport should have been built in Bangalore at least 25 years ago. In any case, the airport at Devanahalli (I wonder which member of the Gandhi family it will be named after!) is coming up fast. Things will vastly improve after that. Hyderabad will have a new airport around the same time or earlier, Delhi's and Mumbai's new terminals will be under construction, Delhi would already have a second parallel runway and the Chennai/Kolkata airport modernization would have begun (in both cities, the situation is currently tolerable, though far from optimal).

So cheer up. There are many things to dream about and many of these dreams will be fulfilled pretty quickly. Inshallah, of course, as with anything to do with India!

around with nothing to do. I thought this would be one of the first things
GVK addressed. The whole airport still has that bleak, dull outlook that
probably will never change until the new terminal is built.

2009 ? I did read that the first flight is gonna take off sometime in April/May 2008. Hope the project does not get delayed.

Welcome on board! Great pics and thanks for posting. However it may be best to resize them a bit.

1) Immigration officers are not supposed to be nice. That is the thumb rule I guess. They have to appear as if they are doing you a favour. I cannot really say the Indian immigration officers are any worse than others that I have come across.

2) Employees sitting around and doing nothing is a public sector / government phenomenon.

3) The current terminal can be jazzed up. All they have to do is get professional interior designers. There is no lack of them in India. (But just don't hire anyone from CPWD or PWD or any government agency like NBCC, EIL etc). But do they want to spend the money to jazz it up or wait for the new terminal?

The new domestic departures terminal is a step in the right direction, but I hope it's not what the CAA terms a world class facility. It still leaves much to be desired and does not offer the amenities that are standard at many of the most simple world airports (a place to get food airside). It too is very small, though as far as I could tell, the upper level was not being utilized. I hope that this terminal is only a holdover until the CAA can get an integrated, truly world class facility underway. A'bad has a lot of economic prowess and potential, and it deserves better terminals than it has currently.

Yeah, that's one of my biggest complaints as well. The entire airport has this very sterile feeling, like walking into an office or hospital, maybe a combination of the two. Not only that, but there seem to be quite a few dimly lit areas in the airport- they should work on better artificial lighting as well as designing any new additions with more glass to allow in natural light. Also work to have real dining/shopping options from known chains, not just kiosk-like things that look rather shady.

The 'extensions' are for aerobridges. The fact that the first floor is not being used is also indicative of the fact that they are waiting for the aerobridges to be installed. Once they are, the upper floor will be used for aerobridge departures and the lower ones for other departures.

things wont change with the employees as they are still the same with the same guaranteed employment status. they cant be fired. that part will take lots of time, probably nearer to when a certain percentage will be asked to leave, then they will all have to work to impress their bosses

I agree, the render looks great and a definte improvement to the exisiting 1950's style buidling. The new one looks more current and modern. I do like the design of the airport buses.

Thanks for the clarification. The rendering makes sense and now i can co-relate the changes they were making for 1B land side. It looks like the entire 1B is getting revamped land side and air side.

That's correct and there is only one (or one and a half since there is one sitting unfinished) An-225s in existance.

The picture of Port Blair's runway is taken from the far end of the runway (R-22). At this end, about 100 feet or so, there is a higher (than runway elevation) ground that leads to a gentle hillock. See the cows/bulls grazing?

Any photographer can have this vantage point (R-22 T/Shold), use a tele-photo lense and shoot away at the runway/aircrafts and make it look as if the pic is taken from a cockpit of a plane on FINALS.

But surely these photographs (at least Pic 2 and Pic 3) are NOT from a landing plane's cockpit. It would be an insult on Indian air traffic and ground traffic controllers to suggest / assume that they let planes on finals to touch down in the presence of other taxiing a/crafts.

used it for the first time, and have to say i was quite dissapointed. the finish and quality of interiors is indeed a quantum jump, but the whole layout and design is quite ill-thought out. the check-in area is not deep enough leading to people having to squeeze past each other for x-ray and check-in. the security area and holding area are tiny and without any separate gates for separate flights. everyone is dumped in one area

the queue for security took well over half an hour, which is ridiculous for just passing your hand baggage through x-ray and walking through the metal detector. the building save for the check-in area is full of pillars, maybe a few feet apart. thats more than you would find in an office or home, let alone a busy public place like an airport. this terminal is quite a waste. 1-A, though not as spiffy looking, is much superior in usage and design

I would like to know too! But considering AAI's track record, I am not buying into AAI's much trumpeted claims of upgrading 30 airports to international standards. They simply have no clue about what is international standards. I will change my opinion once I see some concrete work on ground.

Expansion of the domestic terminal at Mumbai airport. No matter what - unless they clear those shanty towns all around the airport and the five star luxury hotels - the place will always have that run down look. Rehabilitation of shanties in India is easier said than done. Few people in power have any motivation to provide decent lives to the poor. Now that huge mess of shanty towns has been created by active encouragement of politicans, goondas, cops and babus - wonder what the solution is. Keep hearing about the great Dharavi plan. That seems to be like any other great plan - caught up in endless and often useless debates.
