Located 10km west of Sydney, Burwood is the main commercial and retail centre for Inner West Residents, with major firms having their regional offices within the suburb. Burwood has a thriving retail precient running along Burwood Rd along with two major shopping centres (Westfield & Burwood Plaza).

Here is a map of the area (Gregorys)

Some General shots of Burwood I took yesterday as I had a few hours to kill before uni (in neighbouring Strathfield)

Westfield - It was expanded in 1999 and houses 230 stores including Myer, Kmart, Target, Coles & Greater Union. The original complex built in 1965 (with 65 shops + an office tower) was demolished as part of the expansion.

Burwood is home to Australia;s oldest concrete chimney!!
the 90ft high serwer vent on Railway parade is a beauty!! the octagonal stack was built in 1919.

and to think there are ideas to build up to 25 floors around dean st ----------when i come to sydney i stay in croydon and go to burwood ( --shopping ,eating )nearly every day.i lived here most of my life . near the burwood girls high school--. and the tip next the school is still not full after16 years. there were plans to put units up to 22 floors there down in the hole (it was a brick works ) then they went down to 8-12 levels-- every one kicked up a stink so it will be mostly a park. i was there when the old chimney was blown up.some of it fell in the large hole -----.on the other side of burwood park near mlc school there were plans to build up to 30 levels in early 70s that was stopped quick-- burwood has always been the main centre between the city and parramatta thats why ashfield -strathfield have small (mini westfields) out of jealousy because the councils wanted to take away business--- but it really has not worked .burwood has changed a lot since 2000 its like a mini city-- skyscrapers will come sooner or later----

I've lived in neighboring Concord all my life and throughout highschool almost every afternoon involved some time spent in Burwood, it's the place to go for people in the area. Especially when the cinemas opened. No reason to travel to Parramatta or the city for movies after that. I'm surprised how good it looks from the Tower, you can always spot Strathfield from a distance but rarely Burwood. Can't wait for it to develop. There's a nice patch of land near the railway before the Gateways building, there seem to be buildings near all train lines these days.

I took a train from the central to Epping today and saw the Gateway in Burwood from the train. The Gateway stands right next to the railway track. It's unusual to see an apartment block so close to the railway. Won't it be too noisy there?

Burwood is a burgeoning area and with any foresight, we can see it becoming a satellite CBD. Pehaps not to the extent of Chatswood or Parramatta at this stage.

Whenever I have ventured there, it hustles and bustles with people galore.

Greater Union certainly had the foresight to open an 12 screen cineplex in 2000 @ Westfield Burwood.

They really have to do a major overhaul on Burwood Station, to cope not only now but also in the future.

Westfield Burwood is an architectural distaster. The interior design is crap, the layout is crap and above all Westfield is crap. It's one hell of a crowded shopping centre.

Burwood's good. It follows a simple arcade style layout & when compared to other Westfield's it's easy to navigate.

Did anyone go to the Westfield before the rennovation? It used to have a wide open cavernous interior, they had some great big christmas trees in there. I liked it, but obviously more practical to create more floor space. It seemed like a bigger building to me before.

It's always been a popular place when I've been there, with lots of traffic on Burwood road and plenty of shoppers. I'd be interested to see what new developments will be coming. The Parramatta road plan showed a large amount of development in the Burwood region. At first I thought they were solely refering to housing on Parramatta road, but more reasonable to be creating 30000 new residences in the whole suburb. I'm guessing there will be a corridor of high-rise along Burwood road from Parramatta rd. to Clarence st. and along the railway line.
